Old movie fans might enjoy this one http://archive.org/details/TheFirstOfTheFew. By the late 1920's aircraft designer R.J. Mitchell feels he has achieved all he wants with his revolutionary mono-planes winning trophy after trophy. But a holiday in Germany shortly after Hitler assumes power convinces him that it is vital to design a completely new type of fighter plane and that sooner or later Britain's very survival may depend on what he comes to call the Spitfire. - IMDB Description

Hurrah!
I was reading an article that the P51 was intially a order place by the British, and when the US military realised that fistycuffs was on the cards had a look at it themselves and thought it a very nice plane:old:
I don't know if its true by the way, I apologise to the colonials prior to any hissy fits if I am misinformed :old:
I also read in Stanford Tucks book that his sqaudron recieved all new variable pitch propellors for their Spirfires from you colonials before lease lend :salute

The original P-51 (from British order) sat around at Wright-Patterson for a long time until the USN needed to do some gun testing. The P-51 was then rolled out and the Navy pilots were so impressed, their reports finally filtered down to the USAAF who decided to have a look at it. The rest is history.
Rotol and DeHavilland are not American companies.
