My uncle Malcolm Dillard Carroll served and died aboard the Submarine USS Herring in World War II.
It was sunk by two direct hits from shore batteries to the conning tower off Matsuwa Island on June 1st 1944.
He was 24 years old and a veteran before the war broke out.
My Mother recently told me that he used to call all of the “Gung Ho” people that joined up after Pearl Harbor “Flag Wavers”…… I thought that was funny.

To your Uncle :salute
My Great Grandfather was a submariner in the Royal Navy WW1.
My Grandfather (the guy in my avatar) was Acting Leading Signalman on HMS Formidable during WW2
Real men.
Thanks to them, we have our liberty today.
My Son is a Royal Marine.
Thanks to those still serving, our Grandchildren will have the same liberties tomorrow.
