My favorite game growing up has grown up!!!!!! Cant wait!!!
-
I adopted the original and the sequel. Looks true to the roots, and even improved. Definitely a buy for me so far.
-
looks like a pain to play. like a futuristic turn based version of bia or armed and dangerous.

gyrene if this is anything like the original which it seems to be almost exactly alike, it is probably the easiest to learn and most fun to play TBS in existance.
The only thing youd need to learn once you learn the simple controls is the tech tree which is at the start undiscovered (unless you go online to find it "cheater" coughcough) and i for one cant wait to see the new techs :x
i see mind powers again!!!! :x
PLEASE say the maps are random generated again pleasepleaseplease :pray

redownloading the original just out of pure excitement! :rock

YES! they kept it turn based. Finally someone does not follow the Fallout 3 bad example of turning a superb turn based game into first person action. Not that Fallout 3 is so bad, it is just not a Fallout sequel.
In the long years of waiting for such a modern turn based game I've been playing this:

It is not like spin-offs are disallowed. I am just happy that the turn based game has not died.

A slight bump, but felt it was better vs creating a whole new topic.
REALLY enjoying the game. I do miss the ability to shoot at stuff several times because of insanely high AP, and the ability to "loot" corpses to get stuff that would help in the mission. At the same time however, it's a bit of a relief not having to deal with inventory management so friggen much. The one thing that urks me the MOST though, is that the aliens get a free turn when they are spotted. :bhead Rather annoying. :bhead Panic is a bit of an issue and you HAVE to choose your battles carefully. I ignore the difficulty of the mission (depending) and choose which is in most need. Seems to help out quite a bit. Satellites are something to keep up on as well, but money is an issue at first, to say the least.
I keep hearing people saying that Snipers are the crappiest unit in the game. Now granted, in my last game I seem to ONLY get Snipers (felt like a 2 out of 3 Rookies would turn into a Sniper), I find them to be extremely useful. Slap a scope on them and they will damn near do all the work for you. :D Was doing really well in my last go, then XCOM just decided that I needed a good ol FACE RAPE. 2 Mission, 12 Solider's....LOTS of pain, and death. :ahand Mostly death. :bhead Of course this sent panic through the friggen roof. Then the 3rd mission, Alien Terror...yeah. I think I would've accomplished more if I had just blown MYSELF up. :bhead
Damn it...I am really enjoying it. :x

Yep it's a great game no doubt :) Ironman mode is excellent, just totally does away with the temptation to always be saving/reloading which kind of spoiled things a little in the original titles
I keep hearing people saying that Snipers are the crappiest unit in the game.
These people don't know what they are talking about. All the classes are good, and a good balance is vital (especially a couple of Heavys with HEAT ammo for when you start coming up against a lot of cyberdiscs and Sectopods. But Snipers are definitely not crappy.
Squad sight makes them excellent
Archangel armour later on make them even more amazing
-
:lol Yeah. In my last go, my snipers were the first to hit Colonel. It was to the point where 8 out of 10 shots I took, were in the 95%+ chance to hit (even then, most would be 100% :x). With Double Tap, would kill 2 enemies when it activated, or mess up a Berserker real bad. :devil I'm not sure if Squad Sight is working like it should, or if I'm just misreading it terribly. BUT, I know it's MUCH better than Snapshot. For my Assaults, I generally shy away from the Shotguns, despite them having a fair amount of damage. The issue is GETTING close to kill. Even with Run N Gun, it can be a bit of a pain. Though I DO let them do all of my captures. :aok
The start is a bit of a doozy, as you want to level your 1st set of troops quickly, but at the same time, don't want the others to fall behind. I find that keeping 2 going while rotating 2 out helps. Still a bit risky though.
-
I generally do the same with assaults, use rifles instead of shotguns for the most part
Although the alloy cannon shotgun thing is well worth checking out :D

original Xcom, One of my favorite games of all time. That game was intense, especially early on when your weapons sucked, or you ran across a new alien and they did crazy stuff (trying to stop the first crabman :O). I still remember two of my characters from that game, that somehow beat the odds and made it all the way to the end from the beginning.

I'll take a look at that shotgun then. :) Will be hard to move away from the rifle though.
So far I've managed to capture the Sectoid, Thin Man, Floater and a Muton in my current campaign. It took 2 missions before I finally captured a Thin Man though. 1st mission got both of my Arc Throwers killed. :bhead The easiest happened to be the Muton. :D Almost literally fell into my lap. :x 2 1/2 months into the run, and panic is starting to become an issue. Fortunately I have the base assault objective active and while my soldiers are still using the basic weapons, most are Captain. So if I play it right, I'll be fine. That first base is rather easy, once the Chryssalid's are dealt with. :aok

Yep, hell froze over. He actually LIKED the game... :noid

Loving it

For me, I say they did a rather fantastic job. Still...hate...Alien's....FREE MOVE WHEN SPOTTED! :bhead There have been a couple of times where I'll spot them while they head to cover but disappear behind it, then make their 2nd move and end up staying in sight....only to move a THIRD time because of it and get into cover. :bhead
Still lovin it! :x

I played the original but may have been too young to understand how to beat it. I ran through the normal level with much disappointment thinking this isn't what I remember. Then I went classic level. Oh ya now this is what I remember guys freaking out guys shooting each other and curling up in the fetal position.
I was on an extraction mission was near the exit when a thin man decided to jump out of nowhere and kill one of my guys. My lovely assault soldier decided it would be better to kill the VIP then to escort him to the exit. This is the game I remember. Getting somewhere then wanting to throw the mouse across the room. I'm at the alien base right now on classic and it was no easy task.
The big issue I found was normal level doesn't prepare you for classic level forget iron man mode. The tactics that worked on normal level don't work on classic level completely different game.
-
Nope. Ye don't play normal to PLAY XCOM. Play normal just to mess around. I've had 2 go's on Classic Ironman and it's both easier AND harder than the original. What I'm looking forward to, is when I can put in some time into an Impossible Ironman run though. :) Which I may devote my next days off to. :D I still dread Chryssalid's... :bhead
