Title: made it to 156 kills this time before running out of luck (fighter streak)
Post by: Citabria on June 06, 2012, 08:52:45 AM
a personal best this tour. highest I had before this was in a p51d to 152 kills before getting shot down.

this time I was flying a variety of german planes. was trying to clear the six of another player when instead of turning away from me they turned into me bringing the spit16 on their tail right into my face...

I tried to evade the headon as the spit sprayed like mad which i can ussually do without to much trouble but took a 20mm to the face and was back in the tower.

oh well was fun streak. they always seem to end in such retarded ways though :D

My record was 33 or 34, don't recall.  It ended when I collided with a Spitfire Mk IX (top end free Spit back then), that the collision was entirely my fault as I was being over aggressive.

Maybe I'm just an old wimp, but killstreaks (my own) are just making me nervous. The first death in a new tour is almost giving me a feel of relief  :uhoh
My own best was 140 kills, but that was about 70 tours ago. Ended by a tater thrown at me by Apar. Nowadays I don't come even remotely close to that, these times are gone  :old:

My best was 33, in 2 sorties. Horde busting in jet and a 109, landed 23 and 10. The horde got more reinforcements and i died like 4 times in 5 mins after that haha

That's pretty astounding Fester. Especially since I know you will mix it. I looked at your stats from last camp and saw you had 20% kill hit ratio. That is amazing. Even more surprising it only ranked you to 8th in that category. So one is absolute dead eye for sure.

I made it to 35 kills one camp about 4 or 5 years ago and just left it there. Turned out that was good enough for #1 in that category. Apparently others had taken the camp off because many times they are well into the 100s.

Back to your streak, that is still amazing when so many things in the game will kill you like an errant 88mm, base ack, town ack, a friendly cutting you off, and let's not forget those loveable trees.

I was checking standings the other day and saw that you had 105/0 record in fighters...

Recently, I ran up 84 straight kills in a 109G-2... Then I was shot down by DragonH5's T-34 when I elected to strafe it on the way to land..... LOLOL

there is so much random lead flying around that not getting killed by somthing every sortie is pretty improbable. haven't lost a streak to main gun tards on a straff run but did lose a 262 ona dozen kill sortie to an m18 that i straffed as i was rtb... they main gunned my jet lol.

It's always fun... End one streak and simply start another...

Guys, Fester has been around even longer than me. I remember some years ago when fester and I winged up in the AvA arena and had the other side near apoplectic.... I think we stole 3 or 4 bases, while the other side whined epically... Flying with Fester is always a hoot... He knows how to have fun in the game.

That reminds me... Fester's monster Stuka mission circa 2003. Fester managed to get more than 80 players in Stukas, and the mission was to take a 10k field. What a blast! And, we took the base too. Huge fun.

ju87 missions are fun. I also remember a particularly epic c47 mission to reset mindanao back when you had to cap all but 3 bases... about 50-60 goons all dropped at once and though it did win the map it also crashed the server with all those troops all over the place :D

I am curious if I was the first one to get widewing hooked or interested in this game... emailed him on his website asking for his input on the aces high p38 back around 2000 or so when I was lobbying for the p38 to be tough as a b17 and roll like a 190 :)

Reminds me of the bishops running 30+ goons on a map where the Me-163 capped the V-base to win the war.

I was in an Me-163 trying to intercept when "Dozen's of C-47s" reported on country, I showed up to see a few DOZEN dropping troops at the same time.

Ah good fun, shame now a days it takes dozens to shut down a base to avoid a fight

I'd like to read a write up from you CitFest on how you got your "mojo" back after your long break.  I can remember flying with you 12/13 years ago when this game first began, and how you could just dance around and blow everything out of the sky at will.  This was always the case from what I remember.

I know from reading your posts/listening to you talk/type in game, and from your stats that when you first returned a short time ago it wasn't all wine and roses as it is now for you.  Don't get me wrong, you were still one of the best the day you returned I'm certain, but you weren't putting numbers like this post up right away either.

How much work was it to get back to being on top like you are now?  Did it just come back like riding a bike?  Did you do anything special or different figuring out how to do what you do compared to before you went on leave with  regards to how much the game has changed?  Did you get the feel back for flying right away, did your aim and gunnery instincts return almost overnight or did it take a lot of work?  Also, what do you attribute mostly to your level of success, "tactical" types of skills like being a good shot/good E and turn fighting skills, or "strategic" types of skills like knowing when and how to enter a fight, when and how to exit it, etc etc.

If you have the time and inclination a few thousand words on this subject would be of high interest to not just me I bet, but a number of current/new/old hands around here.  It could even start a trend of having a lot of the top sticks write up similar documents, and not even just those guys but guys who are considered experts in terms of knowledge as well as being very effective in the game - Widewing also jumps to mind, but there are lots of guys like some of the Squad leaders like Bruv, Perdweeb, Waystin....guys who have had a lot of success with regards to stats, FSO performance, you get the idea.

you never get on top of this game you just find different stuff to be frustrated by... say dying to a retarded friendly your trying to save that gets you killed as opposed to being a retard that died to  the same spit wondering why the other green guy didn't kill him for you.

I flew in an armored il2 at low level plinking tanks and dodging fighters a lot. mostly because it was fun but it also gave me lots of time being low and slow and taking snapshots at passing enemy aircraft as they zoomed back up on their perch.

after so much of that it was pretty much a nonevent to have an enemy airplane holding all the cards and attacking from above. often I am too lazy to fight for angles and just let a con saddle up on my six before I kill them. word of warning this does not work as well if they are expecting it or ultra cautious timid types but if they cant bleed off their e in time they often end up right in front of you missing peices.

as for furballing the best bang for the buck in turn fighting practice you can get is in the ww1 arena where everything is a furball and no one bothers to run away or E fight because you simply cant without getting killed.

duel with squaddies or anyone interested in that stuff to sharpen up for the almost nonexistant fair 1v1 fights that you will never encounter in the MA. they will help you win more unfair fights even 1v1 which are more common.

if your gunnery is crap keep changing planes till you find one you can hit stuff with then practice with it. you will only have a fraction of a second to get a firing solution on a bandit bnzing you and you have maybe 1 or two chances to execute it before they or their friends kill you. you have to kill fast to survive. thats all there is to it.

If you cant hit your target they will be mad at you for letting them live as opposed to a nice soothing trip to the tower. whats more they will tell their friends about how amazing your gunnery isn't and then more people will want to show you how to shoot by shooting at you and giving you a nice soothing ride back to the tower.

then there is situational awareness. if your finding you always have a red icon apearing on your six stop and ask yourself... "am I flying in an enemy radar ring that is white or red?"
if its white you just gave the enemy a free pass for not having situational awareness because they get to see where you and anyone able to help you is at all times and the red icons in view are only the first to arrive. the rest will be there after you blow your E fighting the red guys you see right now. if it is red your enemy has to actually see you before they head in your direction so if you want to fly in enemy territory make sure the radar isnt announcing your position to more enemy aircraft than you are capable of dealing with at one time.

but what if my radar is down? then you lost your situational awareness crutch and have to look out the window too! check your high six low six and often. look everywhere. its amazing how many f4us apear behind me out of thin air after diving from low orbit that I would never have seen if I wasn't already expecting an unseen enemy aircraft trying to sneak up on me.

Is there a function either in-game or on the website that tracks this? I would guess mine is in the high 20's to 30's but have never tracked it. 152 is amazing! If in-game is Fester I was 2 of those... :bhead

can only track it once a month until you die once.

could do it in attack mode but that counts vehicles and stuff so I never bother tracking it after the first streak of the tour ends... then its go straff fields and get killed by acks n wirbles n such after the fly to live fun ends.

I ran up 16 kills yesterday without dying. Oops that's not quite correct. I went afk once and my plane lost autopilot and down I went. But here's the story. I went to one base that was under fairly heavy attack. There were few defenders. I managed to kill 3 jabos and then rearmed for the next herd to come in. However the ones that hit the base killed all the FH's and the one guy left other than myself must have been new. He died fast. That left me with a 38. I tagged the 38 pretty good but he didn't go down. I check high 6 and here comes a blazing p47 so I had to pull off the 38. The p47 climbs back up. Back to the 38. Of course the p47 comes back. This time I had to make a tighter turn. He climbs back up. In comes the 38. (I'm in trouble here). I duck to avoid the HO. I don't think the 38 was maneuvering very well fortunately. Again the p47. This time he pulls up a hair too soon and swing back behind him and put a few pings on him but I'm nervous about the 38. I pull off fast and dive down for E. Once more the 47. This time I'm slow and I don't make it around as fast as I should have. He gets my oil. Now the hangers pop and everyone takes off, whew. The 47 makes a break for it but it's too late I get an assist and the p38 succumbs to his wounds......finally!

Later I head to 39 I get 4 kills and land. Re-up after I drop base supplies and go for the hunt. I head out to see what I can find. FBLazy has 2 f6s on him. He is flying very well though thank goodness. I dive in on one of the f6s. I check my 6 out of nervousness and there bearing on me is a p51. I grit it out and ping the f6 lightly or so I thought and turn hard. This p51 is more aggressive than most these days. He pulls up but only to burn some e and continue the attack. I avoid him again by slipping under his nose. Here comes the other f6. I'm doomed. I dodge him and gain a bit of e. The 51 is now back and he wants blood. I peer out my back side screen and I see an f6 go down in blazes, thanks to FBLazy. Then I thought I saw another plane go down at his hands. Then he must have polished off the f6 I pinged because I got the kill. The p51 is still all over me, bnz style. Finally I take a risk and swing into him. He misses my flat turn and turns in front of me. I get him into my sights and missed! but now he runs. I rearm and ended up landing 8 kills for that sortie.

The point being is I would have not landed those kills if it weren't for others. I try not to rely on other pilots but wow it is sure nice when they come through.
