simple question. i just got a logictech g35 headset. it works fine. but some people say use a Powered USB hub. should i do this to prolong the life of the G35? but the manual also says connect direct to PC. and not to use a USB hub?

it doesn't prolong the life of the headset, it keeps you from pulling your hair out trying to figure out why the headset doesn't work all the time.
your computer motherboard probably has only 2 onboard built-in usb "hubs", each of which feed a "set" of usb ports on the system. everything you plug into a usb port requires resources, mostly a bit of the limited power (500mA) per hub that is needed for the usb device to work properly. since the headset you just got does not have its own power supply, it will need to be powered by the motherboard which may or may not cause you problems depending on the power management settings you use and how many usb devices you have plugged into the system...
-
iirc the hubs also switch to the speed of the slowest device attached to them ...
I have my joystick on its own mobo hub, all the other stuff off the others.

whats the best setting for usb in power management?
I dont use a powered hub for my g35.
So powered hubs are good investment?

there is no good setting for windows power management, it's been buggy since it was put into the operating system.
i have a powered 4 port usb hub and haven't had a single problem with my steering wheel, joystick or game controller losing calibration, wiggling, bugging out, doing weird things. when those devices are directly plugged into my mobo, strange things happen.

might get one, my sidewinder wireless mouse sometimes messes up.

The best setting for Windows power management is to disable it.
-
Its best to diable it?
How do you do that? :)

the G35 needs a full USB 2.0 bandwidth to work. So it will most likely not work behind a powered hub.

rgr Noir :salute
i will keep it to its own usb port :old:

the bandwidth doesn't fluctuate on a usb port, it's the voltage throughput. that said, it would probably work better to put joystick/pedals on the hub and the headset in a usb port that is connected to an onboard port which does not share an onboard hub controller with your mouse and keyboard.
