Title: Any tips for shipping a gaming PC?
Post by: Gustav on June 07, 2012, 09:28:44 PM
I am moving from Virginia to Oklahoma soon and I have been trying to find tips on how to securely ship a computer. I am mainly worried about the GPU and the large Xigmatec Balder cooler I have on the CPU.

or better yet, how would everyone else ship a gaming rig? any Advice?  :)

Lots of bubble wrap? Just do it the same way a lot of shipping companies do it. Find a large box and put the PC in, make sure there's enough extra room for some bubble wrap and if you don't have bubble wrap, styrofoam or lots of paper works too.

Or if you reaaaly want to be safe, take apart all the lose parts in your PC, put it in a small box and into the trunk of your car that you'll drive or in the backseat.

Sadly I won't be driving, Will be taking a flight. so I will have to have it shipped, of course I may just get a large box, put my PC in a box, and the GPU and CPU cooler in their own bubble-wrapped boxes and place them all in the big box.

If that sounds alright. :)

Hmm in that case, if you have a lot of clothes, get a really big box, put the PC in the middle, stuff clothes and other soft stuff around it. That's how I did it on a trip to Vietnam (24 hour flight btw) and the PC was fine. Just be prepared to iron all your clothes :P.

ya, i would take out the heatsink and the video card, pack the inside of the computer with balled up newspaper, then wrap the heatsink in bubble wrap and the video card in a static bag with bubble wrap around the bag. stuff the box with whatever you can get your hands on for packing material.

Shipping a pc is simple. Just head down to Best buy or another place and ask for an empty pc box. It ships in those all the time. Place your pc into said empty box and add a little more bubble wrap or Styrofoam if needed .

Unless you have direct control over the shipping condition/method/means, certain things (CPU heat sink, GPU card) are not securely mounted to the solid case and can break loose or simpley break off given a sharp/violent enough impact.  Once, driving with my case in the trunk lyeing on its board side down, I had RAM come loose and then the PC didn't boot until I pulled out and put it back in properly (it's probabley safer to transport plugged into your board, but give it a good look over when unpacking and setting up).

I am more afraid of the fact that the moment I saw Taz, that sentence made perfect sense. :)
Besides, where I am moving doesn't seem to get that kind of activity too often. :neener:

Oh, will the HDD be fine for shipping while mounted in the case? considering the case is a Coolermaster Storm Scout with the wonky tool-less HDD bay.

Also, once I get settled into my new home, I should be ready to play Aces High! (And likely get shot down by everything. :D)

Do NOT use styrofoam peanuts, or any type of styrofoam that can break into little pieces.  These pieces can get inside the air vents, and styrofoam is a great source of static electricity.  Static can give you a dead computer, even if you see no physical damage.

Yea, shipping the PC won't be too much, I think I will take my main HDD with me on my carry-on. (Hopefully the TSA doesn't think too much of it. :uhoh)

But yea, I wonder what you guys think of Lawton?
