Title: Hey Widewing!
Post by: Hajo on June 10, 2012, 09:02:42 AM
My good friend.  I was going through my library of WWII when I suddenly noticed that one of my favorite

books on the subject "War Wagles in Original Color" was published by Widewing Publications by Ethell and Bodie (Bodie being my favorite author on the subject).

Could it be???  Would it be???  (as usual, I favor pictures over words )  :lol

For those of you officianados of WWII aircraft, it's a book of color photos (the best collection I've seen in print).

I have no idea if it is still available.  If so pick one up.  It's well worth it.  Mr Bodie has a huge collection, maybe the largest
photo collection available.

When I was writing with Bodie, I borrowed his publishing company name for my BBS handle, and used it in game as well. So...it is! :salute

Widewing was the code name for 8th AF HQ.

After Warren (Bodie) passed, his son Brad took possession of his father's photo collection. I don't know what he's doing with it. I also don't know if Warren changed his will at any point. After we went our separate ways (as did everyone who worked with Warren), I didn't communicate much with him. Like Jeff Ethell, when I walked away from Bodie, I didn't look back. Not an easy man to get along with.... His way was the only way.... He was generous and fair, but as stubborn as brain damaged mule at times. His battles with Roger Post at Flight Journal were epic. At one point, Flight Journal was so annoyed, they refused his articles for about a year. That's when I walked away as his arguing with editors was impacting my work as well. Very knowledgeable man, but flawed in people skills.

Not to be off topic but sounds alot like my grandfather, after he left Hungary in 55' he moved to england, canada then USA. When I was graduating high school I couldn't get a job anywhere, I ended up working in his Butcher shop, where I can say he was gruel some when it comes to work. Basically he tried to get me a job washing cars for 50 cents a car, I rather shunned on that idea he didn't take it to well (he owned a car wash at the same time) I wasn't to interested in the Butcher job but when he offered it I figured it was better then the blistering heat in Florida. My father and I had a great relationship, Grandfather vs me/my father - not so much.
Very hard man to work for, and it was his way or get out - no questions asked even if he was wrong. I can't blame the guy, he came to England with $20 in cash, and retired broke even though he did have one of the largest taxi fleets in canada as well as dump trucks which he sold to the city of montreal.
No social skills either, you couldn't say "How are you grandpa" or he'd respond "You look in good health, go wash some cars".
I will say one thing he was a playboy for his time, somehow smoothed over the neighbor who retired and left him a chunk of change, without it I'd probably be doing IT work somewhere instead of running my own rental business. Only bad news is he left me two houses which I am renting and drowning in the taxes until the housing market goes up enough I can sell them.

(Butcher job was far better then being your own electrician, plumber, carpenter, maintenance, lawn care guy all at once) lets just say its not a job you want to learn as you go - I already put a ground wire on a main while the breakers were on (if you don't know it makes a really nice loud bang where it pretty much makes you brown shorts).

I do hope his photo collection is intact and in good hands. I would be a travesty if it were lost or wasted just sitting in archive.
