Title: Kickstart Page for Overtime Incentive
Post by: tunnelrat on June 11, 2012, 12:29:36 PM
As far as games go, Aces High is probably one of (if not THE) best bang-for-the-buck MMOGs out there.

Almost every other single game out there has both a pay-to-play AND a pay-for-content model.

For an RPG, new dungeons = $$$

For a sim like this, you just get new planes...

Now, HTC goes through a painstaking process to select/research, model/design, and test each new entry.  Over the past decade we have ended up with an unparalleled assortment of toys to play with.

But, the wishlist is a massive and hungry beast... for every vehicle HTC adds, 50 requests are added from the insatiable crowd.

I propose a Kickstart (or something similar) page to provide an incentive (as well as what simple amounts to the economic viability of increased model production).

You want to see a new plane?  You can wait... or, drop a few bucks on it (and still wait hahaha)

Now, I agree in advance with the misers out there who will absolutely lose their minds over this suggestion... no, people with some extra cash to throw around should not dictate every future addition... there should still be a vote (if HTC is so gracious to continue to field such a thing - again, UNHEARD of in on-line gaming... letting players CHOOSE the next addition... scandalous)

But, on a snowy Saturday morning... when HiTech is sitting in his skivvies, drinking some coffee... what would motivate him to fire up Blender/3DSMAX (or whatever wizardry these gentlemen use)?  A big bellybutton tip jar, that's what.

(And yes, I have $100 waiting to drop on the HE-177)

Hrmmm... which A-26 variant are you going for?  Because that would be epic.

+1 for this idea  for the increase of potential capital for HTC and Aces High.

Using These types of incentives for "free to play" games is increasing across the board; so much so that "World of Warcraft" is using it in some fashion to create a additional stream of Capital. Other games include "City of Hero's", "Champions", even the new release of "Mech Warrior Online" has plans to implement it. As for "Aces High" it could be a useful tool as well so why not modify your request to be an Auction? I'd rather see an auction for the next planes or vehicle sets to be implemented rather than offering as an incentive buy. Why? because if you start offering a Plane for pay then it stands to reason that only players who "buy the plane" will be able to use it. It  can be unbalancing if not implemented carefully.

Therefore in my line of aberrant thinking Auctioning a block of planes or vehicles  to the community shows how enthusiastic the community is for that particular block. For Example set the max bid limit at $25 with an incremental increase per bid at .25 cents per bid, per person. Additionally you could set the max number of bids to 10 per day ($2.50)  In this fashion HTC could offer in that bloc 4 planes to choose from. The one  that reached $25 first gets implemented and then the next one, and so on and so forth.

In this sense everyone contributes and everyone pays. In this way each bloc is tailored to the taste of the community, and could go for more than just Planes, Vehicles, and Boats. It can be used for new map sets as well.

If someones willing to drop $1,000 to have a plane thats credentials fit to be added in game - so be it, however it does not mean they get #1 spot in the queue of stuff to be added.

In another words:

be quite careful of what you wish for

The problem here is, people would be paying real justifyable sums (with real money), either as an individual or group, with the single interest of a specific aircraft/feature's inclusion.  This would put decision making (and to a degree of financial liability) for priorities or the direction the product is heading out of HiTechs and anyone working at HTC's hands.

As pro-democracy as HiTech and HTC's is - Long live the king!

Oh there would have to be all number of legal/disclaimer jargonizations in here... HTC wouldn't be committing to anything... it'd be a donation... same as a kickstart... angel investor type stuff.

It'd be in their best interest, but not their obligation, to reward the highest donations/donors wishes... as it would encourage more of the same.

But heck yeah I would pony up some extra cash for beer $$$ or whatever.

Or, as they've suggested in the past, if you feel it necessary to send them gratuity with no obligation, just send them a bottle(s) of single-barrel scotch to the postal address provided on the website.

If the forum's search feature is working today, you can lookup HiTech's favorite brand.

Times are tough and a lot of people no longer have the extra cash to put towards a game.  most subscriptions are down, even EvE is down.  All forms of online entertainment have experienced multiple down quarters.   Look at all the games that have come and gone.  This was the month that my provider bill was to go from $99.00 a month to $149.00 for triple play.  I told them that if they put up the price  they could disconnect it.  I just signed a  deal with them to extend my $99.00 a month for triple play for another two years.

I wish that HTC offered discounts like Eve, buy 12 months at a time and get it for $10.00 a month.

Kickstarts are raking in record $$$'s....

The most recent one I saw was Wasteland 2... they met their goal of $900,000 in days... and BLIZZAM.... http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2

That's one of hundreds of similar stories.

I do, however, agree with you that (assuming it was economically sound for them to do so) it would be cool if HTC offered bulk pricing rates.

Actually there is a new model (via Steam: Super MMC, TFC etc.) where the game is FREE but you pay for cool add-ins and the like.

This type of game model is catching on.

just recently, a group of friends that did playthroughs  and reviews on games (The YogsCast, incase someone else is familiar with them) made a brand new game completely off of donations, with different levels of donations receiving different rewards, i saw that some people donated as much as 5k if not more

Kickstart pages are the worst idea ever for any game.  Why pay twice for content? You pay on kickstart then you pay when bying the next expansions and in mmos you pay on monthly basis so why would this ever , be a woeking busiiness model that makes money?
