I was at the Beach today..(VA BCH), when out of the blue I hear this unusual noise in the air... it wasn't the usual jet fighter for sure,,, it didn't sound like one of those planes that pull the advertisements either,,, it sounded much more throaty and with much more power, when I finally found out where it was coming from and looked up there was this absolutely beautiful B-17 floating across the sky fairly low with what appeared to be an TBM following closely, the TBM was changing positions from one side to the other at the wing tips, this was certainly a sight to remember and brought chills to my whole body hearing and seeing them in such a majestic form and actually flying right before my eyes.
I immediately thought about jumping in my F4 to catch up with them but reality hit me in such a harsh way and watched them fly off into the distant blue sky...... Made my day.... was just amazing!!
Happy Fathers Day to all the "Dads" out there. :aok

I had the same thing happen to me about a year ago. I was at home and heard a plane sound like no other. I have lived many years around a major airport and know my plane sounds. The B-17 makes a very distinct rumble from today's modern aircraft. The B-17 flew right over my home around 1-2k. I looked out my window and caught a good view of the B-17's six as it flew away. All I can say is it was dang cool to see that baby fly.

Radials and old piston pounders do make a very unique throaty rumble love the noise.

Few months ago I was running in the neighborhood, heard an all too familiar sound looked up and there was this beautiful B-17 coming in from the North towards Bergstrom.
I don't think there's any aircraft I love watching more than old warbirds, their shape, their sound, and the way the just seem to float in the air compared to modern jets...
Gets me every time.
