Title: Standard gunner positions
Post by: flight17 on June 29, 2012, 01:09:11 AM
Always hated this and after 4 years of it, im finally requesting it...I would like to see the numbers be the same for each position in every bomber. Right now, all bombers are different. For example, I fly mostly b17s but I will fly 24s, 25s, 26s, 29s and the occasional lanc also throughout the tour if not in the same gaming season. I can't tell you what the positions are off my head, but they are programmed in me by touching the keyboard. Tail gunner is 4 I believe, ball gunner is 3... There is no reason that we can't have a standard position setting like below.

1- cockpit
2- nose
3- ball turret
4- tail gunner
5- top
6- left
7- right

it has been asked many times.   even the positions on the tanks got changed a year or two ago for the m3 (i believe) so all positions would be the same no matter which tank you are in.  not sure why it is different in airplanes.  and yes you can look at the side and it tells you the position but you waste a second or two that makes a difference between kill or getting killed.

3- ball turret
4- tail gunner
5- top
6- left
7- right
It has been asked for, but this breakdown is not the best fit.

You need to start with the most common position, the mid-upper turret/gun, though you could call it the tail gun if you like.  Basically, list out each bomber and figure out which positions match up. IIRC:

A-20G: Mid upper
B-17G: Mid upper, tail, nose, right waist, left waist, belly
B-24J: Mid upper, tail, nose, right waist, left waist, belly
B-25C: Mid upper, nose, right waist, left waist
B-25H: Mid upper, tail, right waist, left waist
B-26B: Mid upper, tail, nose, right waist, left waist
B-29A: Upper front, upper rear, nose, right waist, left waist, tail
B5N2: Mid upper
Bf110s: Mid upper
Boston Mk III: Mid upper
D3A1: Mid upper
G4M1: Mid upper, tail, nose, right waist, left waist
Il-2: Mid upper
Ju87s: Mid upper
Ju88A-4: Upper right, upper left, belly
Ki-67: Mid upper, tail, nose, right waist, left waist
Lancaster Mk III: Mid upper, tail, nose
Me410: Mid upper
SBD-5: Mid-upper
TBM-3: Mid upper, belly

who cares what the number is, the point is to have them all the same.

Nice list Karnak and it illustrates why standard positions are problematic. A listing that starts at the front and moves back while always listing right side before left side and top before bottom when positions coincide would also be consistent and avoid trying to go to a standard position, say 3 for example, which isn't available in that bomber. You would only have to know how many gunner positions you had and that the last one is furthest back.

It is problematic, but it could be an awful lot more consistent than it is.

Another example of unnecessary inconsistency  are the Mosquitoes, A-20G and Il-2 in terms of selecting ordnance that is internal versus external.  In some cases the first option is internal and the second is external and in other cases the first option is external and the second is internal.

If I flew those a/c  I would keep notes and make graphics for the bomber guns so I wouldn't have to try to remember everything.

I'm not saying it's not a good wish.

There should be some basic structure for keymapping though. Front-Rear-Left-Right-Upper-Lower.
There was another wish on here some time ago, where the OP wished that the user had the ability to map each gunners position to a key of there choice.
That should please pretty much everyone, because you could customise each bomber as you 'wish'
