Title: Wargame: European Escalation
Post by: MaSonZ on July 06, 2012, 10:42:32 AM
Saw this on Steam for $19.99. Looks ok, but the price tag ($40.00 not on sale) is kinda veering me away. Anyone have expierence with it?

Yes there is.

I have until the 9th to decide if I want it, but I gotta wait for the mrs. to escape the room for a few moments to order it...she finds out I put the money out on a game she may kill me....

I have it and enjoy it.  It's not first person, more of a CO birds eye view.  I play multi a bit, but am generally too busy with other games to play much lately.

From what I've heard, it plays like you would expect it to be. Pretty decent, rock-paper-scissors kind of game play. No resources, you have what you're given and play with it in order to win. Balanced, large maps. Some of the problems I've heard was you can't really micro manage it too much, (tanks will leave infantry behind if you group them together, you can't order a tank to face a certain direction) and that most of the time, you have to zoom out really far so a lot of the detail is lost.

I'd buy it if I had the extra cash. Though I think if you want a really fun/good RTS, get Shogun 2 and all its expansion packs.  :aok Got mine during the Christmas sale last year for $30. Worth every penny.  :aok

It's a pretty good old school RTS set in the cold war. You have a limited pool of forces to draw from during the whole campaign (but this pool increases as you unlock new units with the "command stars" you earn for completing objectives). You get a steady supply of reinforcement-points from holding strategic locations on a map, and use these point to call in units from your force pool. Story is a bit lackluster and sometimes poorly translated from French, but the campaign missions are varied and challenging.

You do not control the facing of tanks and other vehicles, but the crews and infantry are intelligent enough that they will turn to face the enemy, retreat if they're being attacked by an enemy they can't see, and if you order them to move to a spot near woods or bushes they will seek cover. Controls are intuitive and graphics are smooth and very nice.

I have played a few ranked online games, but I'm still working on the single player campaign. Multiplayer seems well thought out and fun. There are hundreds of modeled units from the NATO and Warsaw Pact forces to play with.

The first campaign mission gameplay:
