Title: Forums request: mobile view choice
Post by: quig on July 07, 2012, 10:02:43 PM
As it is now, if I view the forums on my phone, it ALWAYS displays minimal forum details (i.e. the bare bones 'you came from Google search' style forum with no images).

Any way this could be asked in a pop up or something and give mobile users a choice to view the normal forums or the stripped-down version? Without signing in? The screen on my phone is big enough to comfortably view the forums on other sites and I'd like to be able to do that here but I'm always forced to view the minimal version.

I like the default Android browser and don't want to change just to view the forums as a 'Desktop'.

Mine shows pictures tho I can't slide them to see the full picture unless I select the picture in it's own window. I have an android, so I'm thinking it may be some setting on your phone you have to change. Check in the browser setting.

My phone only does this on a few Simple Machines forums... so I'm thinking it is a setting on the forums. I have no problems viewing some other SMF forums or VB/etc. Hmm...

I have my browser set to view images and all that. Works great on other forums.

Do you have compatibility view on? it is the "torn page" symbol to the left of your refresh button on your browser bar. This should correct any image or text errors.

I have an iphone, and turning this on allowed me to make posts that took up more than the text window. Without it, my screen would shift back to the beginning of the text every time I entered a character.

@shotgunneeley:
I don't even know what 'compatibility view' is. I don't see it or the icon you mentioned anywhere on the screen or in the settings.

@deadstikmac:
I checked all settings and still can't solve this.

I even switched browsers to test... Dolphin HD in Desktop mode. Same problem.

I don't get it... I'm really thinking it's a forum setting.

Ok, I get the standard forum view with Opera mobile. All images and everything work.

I'd really prefer to use the built-in browser tho. Hope someone can look into this.

Look into why YOUR browser doesn't work right?

You mean look into why 3 out of the 4 browsers I've tried don't work right? Ok....

I usually use my iPad to view the forum. It seems to work fine with one exception,
The preview does not let you see what you have typed before posting.

There is no 'setting' in this version of SMF which would have any impact on mobile phones.

However, you might try changing the default skin for SMF and see if it makes a difference.  The skin choice is in your profile.

phones dont have the full functionality that computers do.  I could only see 1/2 the picture on my droid x, but with other phones i could see all of it.  it's the phone and it's settings that is stopping you.  that is why for some sites like newegg and amazon ask you if you want to see the phone version or the full site, but the full site has some options that you cannot access due to limitations in java and flash in phones.

What browser are you using on your phone, depending on what you have this will/can greatly affect what you see.

No wap, wap2, imode?

But I've tried appending nowap (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php?nowap) and it proved futile. After reading up on it, I'm not the only one with this problem. Need to do more research.

The default is Safari 533.1 on the phone.

But I've tried Dolphin HD in Desktop mode with the same results. Also tried another browser - funky name I can't remember - all with same results.

The only browser that works is Opera Mobile. And while I like Opera for desktops, Opera Mobile/Mini always seem lacking to me.

@guncrasher:
I know this. But it is annoying that mobile view is forced on me when I don't want it. I can view http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php on my phone without problems on my phone.

This may or may not work but if you go to internet options (I assume you are both using I.E.) and then over to advanced tab and under browsing check the box "Automatically recover from page layout errors with Compatibility View".

Also on my iphone, if you go to Settings / Safari (web provider) / Advanced / Debugger Console "on" will help resolve any web page errors.

SMF is using the latest version of their software.  We cannot move to that version until it is proven stable and all our plug-ins are supported.  It is a slow process.
