Hey guys,
after talking to TomG I really think I need a new computer. How much do I need to spend to get a decent rig in the UK? Interested in playing Aces High and other flight sims.
I haven't got a budget as such but not a lot of spare cash just now,
any ideas?
Nate

I have 550ti if you want it :)
-
What's your current set up? It might be cheaper to just update what you have.
Motherboard
Power supply
Video card
Processor
Ram
?
-
Cheap laptop dude. I don't think I can upgrade it :( Hey Zack, what is that? (sorry for my ignorance) Would it run Aces High on decent settings?
-
unused graphics card
-
Ah ok, how much would you like for it?
-
postage

Ah, is AH the only game you play? Or are there other games you would like to play on high settings as well?
-
AH mainly but really want to get into flight sims but as long as it runs AH on highest and others on moderate I will be happy.

ROF needs agood pc

Processor - Intel Pentium G860 Sandy Bridge 3.0GHz LGA 1155 65W - $90
RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) -$22
Motherboard - ASUS P8H77-V LE LGA 1155 Intel H77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX - $122
Power Supply - CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 (CMPSU-430CXV2) 430W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS - $45
CD/DVD Drive - SONY Black 18X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA DVD-ROM Drive Model DDU1681S-0B - $17
Case - Rosewill BLACKHAWK Gaming ATX Mid Tower - $90
Pick your hard drive, however much you need. 1TB goes for $90.
You'll be getting a 550 Ti from Zack for your graphics card.
A copy of Windows 7 32 bit is $120 or so (you can find cheaper probably).
A monitor/keyboard/mouse is about $200 for a nice one.
So in total, $796 or 649 euros, for everything. If you already have a monitor or a copy of Windows 7, that's ~$300 off.
This'll run AH on high settings (not completely maxed, but high) with 60 fps. You'll pull off maybe 40-50 fps in RoF with mix of medium/high settings. Microsoft Flight Sim X will be maxed, DCS: A10 and P51D will be mix of medium and high most likely.

I strongly suggest you get windows 7 64 bit instead of 32. and make sure you get at least a 600w power supply. 430w is on the low side. and get everything wherever you live as the shipping costs will kill you.

You don't need 64 bit to play AH, I don't think he is a hard core gamer. 430W is fine for all the components (and it's Corsair so its also reliable) unless he plans on upgrading more in the future, then yes go for a higher PSU.

you dont need 64 bit, but if you run into a program that requires 64-bit, and you have 32-bit OS you're up a river without a paddle. I have seen some iffy things about Corsair recently. As semp said, 600 watt or more.
And where do you find a 1TB drive for $90? :O

Nate, as your in the UK, check into Novatech (www.novatech.co.uk) - they have some decent stuff for not so much money. If you can afford even a basic machine from them, add in the card from zack (assuming you have a big enough psu) and you should be good to go. You dont have to buy one of their gaming machines (a lot of the time, your paying for more than you need).
Wurz (not in any way, shape or form affiliated to novatech, just used to use em in the UK before emigrating to the USA)

I bought a Samsung from Newegg for $90. Don't remember but it was on sale no doubt. So far, it's holding 450GB worth of games and I can't tell a difference from my 250GB stock.
EDIT: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185
Going for $110 right now.

and the 32 bit limits your to 4 gigs of ram. which also includes whichever video card you have, sound card, etc. it also cost the same as the 64 bit and most if not all new mobo's will handle 64 anyway.
and the low end corsair ps may not be as good and reliable as their high end. this has been discussed to death here.

Like he mentioned, if he's on a budget than I don't see a reason to save some money on something as minor as 32 bit vs 64 bit. 4GB of RAM is still plenty fast enough, a 550 Ti is a mid-end card, it's not going to be hampered by not having 32GB of RAM . As for programs that uses 64 bit, nate167 said he only plays flight sims, and pretty much every flight sim I know runs on 32 bit systems (yes, including DCS: A10, which I have).
It's building what he needs, not what you need. :) That's the best combo of cheap and performance (I would change the GPU, but he's getting one for free) that I could think of.

Titanic...you arent hearing us. same price for 64-bit as 32-bit... someday he will run into a 64-bit and have a 32-bit OS and be up a river without a paddle, or as Semp said hell want more RAM, which 32-bit limits as well. If I'm getting more for my money at the same price, I dont see a debatable issue in whether I should buy it or not....
-
I just did a quick search on Google shopping and there is a price difference. It varied from the lowest ($10) to the highest ($50).
Alright, I hear what you're saying now, $10 ain't much, but I wasn't totally wrong either since there WAS a price difference. But then again, what would you need more than 4GB of RAM for? :headscratch: For games that is, i don't think Nate is going to use a bunch of RAM intensive program, is he? 4GB seems plenty enough for a casual gamer.

here's from newegg. both are at 99 bucks, have yet to see them at different prices. notice all the packages have the same price also for both 32 and 64 bit.

edit: titanic you dont understand how 32 bit works do you? if his video card has 1 gig of ram then he can only use 3 gigs of the regular ram. if he adds anything else that has its own ram then physical ram goes lower even more. in a 32 bit the total amount of ram is limited to 4 gigs, so most likely his physical ram is around 2.5 or so. it does make a difference in games like aces high.
-
There's absolutely no reason to stick with a 32-bit OS in 2012. Getting 32-bit is a bit like getting a C-cassette player for your next music purchase. It's questionable quality and there's only so much you can do with it in the future.
Win7 x64 has excellent support for 32-bit applications such as AH2 so there's no reason not to go x64. If cost worries you, one might consider getting Win8 release preview - everyone who installs the preview will get a $40 upgrade to full version in 2013. From my limited testing, AH2 seems to work well in Win8.

64 bit- 32 bit can they be used on the same system? not at the same time but do you need a MB that is for 64 bit?
I have the TA 770 A2 + SE could I use 64 bit?
I need more RAM bad...Blender keeps crashing when I get over 1 million verts and its driving me nuts :bhead

Not sure if the Windows7 Compatibility Center (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx) has the answers, but it's a good starting point. You might also like to download and install their Upgrade Advisor (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor).

Ink I have every Windows 98, XP, Vista, and 7 all on the same system (different drives).
The big difference with W7-64 is the memory handler which will help Blender in a big way. Not sure what you are using Blender for that you need a million verts but that will help. There are other solutions of course.
-
a couple thoughts
-dont buy anything slower than an i3 CPU. Forget the AMD (unless the FX-8k series are cheaper than the i5, also you arent worried about a 135W TDP - much better/more expensive PSU is needed)
-RAM is super cheap nowadays, dont try to save money on that. 8GB ddr3-1600 will be enough for almost anything.
-do not buy a 32-bit windows.
-Zack's 550ti is a lower-mid end card, enough for AH, but you wont be able to run the newest games maxed out. Not an inpotent card, but i wouldnt buy it (unless he sells it at a very friendly price)
-
Card is free :)
It keeps looking at me and saying i not being used :)
-
Hey zack, did you get my PM? Thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate?

everything I do ends up with over a million verts...if I stay around 1 million it works OK...but as soon as I go to another multi res level it becomes a slide show and wont allow me to create a normal map (or much of anything else for that matter) :bhead :bhead :bhead
doing stuff like this...

Yes i got your PM <S>

Cool, sorry. There not in my outbox so thought i'd messed up somehow.

Sorry about my poor punctuation and grammar on today's posts. I was typing on my 'not so' smart phone. Meant to say I really appreciate all your help. Doesn't feel such a mine field when you guys are sharing your knowledge!!

Stay away from Ripjaws RAM. You get what you pay for and I have had no less than 10 buddies within the last year buy it, only to have a stick go out on them. Stick with the good brands of RAM.
-
i got the ripjaws ram. so do 3 of my friend. never had a problem with them. we all have 16 gigs of it
