As I sit here writing this, I can hear a P51 that is flying at the local airport about 2 miles from my house. Seems to be doing some pattern work. It flies almost over my home. If I go back outside, I can watch it flying.
There is nothing man made that sounds as cool as a Merlin powered P51 flying overhead.

The Merlin is a cool sounding engine. But just wait until you sit at the end of the runway when a B-17 takes off. The sound moves thru your body.

Except, maybe, one mounted 5-feet infront of you. :aok

Griffons imho, it sounds like a really (very, very) angry merlin.

Merlin sounds like a kitten purring, Pratt & Whitney engine sounds like a Lion.

And the DB sounds like God gurgling sledgehammers.

I was actually surprised by how quiet it was. Quite refined sounding, actually. The prop wash sound was considerably louder than the engines.

Though it's certainly not like me to disagree, and while I love the sound of a large radial as much as anyone, and probably more than a lot, they tend to all sound pretty much the same. The Merlin on the other hand is quite distinctive to my ear, and not much else in the world sounds like that.

Quite true, Merlin has a beautiful purr to it, I am just a sucker for anything with raw power - something the merlin simply does not have.

I simply leave this raw start up as an example of american muscle :P
Been while since I heard the AD-1 at start of the video, now this sucker has one hell of a monster engine!
