I got pedals and a cheep joystick so I am intrested in some feedback about my next big chunk of change...
Track IR or Thrustmaster HOTAS
Im leaning towards trackir for hands free view. Any draw backs and or feedback from guys who have both would be appreciated.

Don't know about track IR but I would get a decent stick myself first I have the Saitek X52 and I love it. 2 years old and worth the money I spent on it..
-
Get both you deserve it :)
-
I would recommend the stick. I also have used the x52 a couple of years and man do i love it. Not to mention saitek (or madcatz) are excellent with customer service. When i did have issues with the stick (connection cord broke) i brought it to their local san diego office and walked out same day with a new setup.
Trackir is incredible, completely changs to feel of the game and adds a huge level of realism and the "woah im free to gaze everywhere". That being said it takes a crap ton of work to get used to. Ive had trackir5 about 2 months and with its bugginess and complexity its still very had for me to use effectively an often i turn it off :(
My recommendation, first saitek x52 (run u about 100 on ebay) then trackir5 (130 on ebay) with the proclip amother 30 or so.
Hope this helps

I love Track IR
-
i had this same problem about 2 weeks ago so i bought a full CH setup and a trackir.. i love the track ir took about 3 days to get used to for me.. it is different but is really cool i dunno about tm stuff but my ch stuff is real smooth
-
Thrustmaster HOTAS, sounds like a "relationship aid".
Dont know about the metal one, but the Cougar is a nasty cheap plastic pos, I would go CH
-
Thrustmaster Warthog all the way, Track IR meh, it didn't improve my SA as much as the Thrustmaster improved my flying.

:salute
Ty all for the feedback... And the winner is¿
$500.00 Metal Thrustmaster Warthog!!!!
I think flying will be better for me without having too look at my keyboard for stuff and it is also the big purchase too get out of the way first means I wont save it for last aka never really get it.

Keep in mind the Thrusmaster has plastic in critical places. It feels stronger than it is. Handle it gently and it should last a while.

Check around before you buy it, I found it on BeachCamera for $400 and had a $50 mail in rebate for it, paid $350 for bran new thrustmaster, was able to buy CH Pro Pedals and Track IR 5 with the money saved :)
-
I would go with a ch fighter stick and throttle. lots of buttons and a lot cheaper.
-
I had a Saitek X52 a few years back, couldn't stand the stupid thing. When moving the stick I got this groaning sound, drove me nutz. I tried everything to make it stop. Finally gave up and put it in the closet after a month or so. Don't know whatever happened to that piece of crap, probably one of the kids came over & stole it. Went out and bought the whole CH set, been a happy camper ever since!!

yeah i played with that TM warthog today it looks strong but has plastic parts inside good luck with it i would picked CH stuff that TM look seriously overpriced.

I'm in the Track IR camp. It was transformational in how it adds to the realism and SA. The first time you move your head to see around the canopy framing to track a target instead of having to turn the plane you'll wonder how you ever flew without it. Also, Once you have a TRACKIR it frees up all of those view hat switches, so the need for a HOTAS with more stuff is reduced. Although then you will never stop find more things to migrate from the keyboard to the Hotas, but it becomes more of a convenience than necessity. Good luck. :salute

I've had saitek and CH products, none compare to a Thrustmaster.
While CH is pretty decent, and far better the saitek 65F - its not in the same class.

Thrustmaster Warthog all the way, Track IR meh, it didn't improve my SA as much as the Thrustmaster improved my flying.
Seriously?? I am a bit surprised by this comment..... I guess I would have never thought upgrading in the stick dept would make that much of a noticable difference. In what ways would you say it improved your flying?

I had a Thrustmaster Cougar for 9+ years before i finally broke the internals, and it was all medal on throttle and stick.

I was able to control throttle far better, plus having an upgraded stick gave me much MUCH better control with my aircraft with rudder pedals - Certain aircraft like P38J you have to watch your throttle more then anything because you can easily go from 420 to compression speed in 1 second flat.
I can push the envelope far better now with flying then previously.
I used an old twisty stick - you couldn't manage the throttle and stick and rudder at the same time, it was to much work for one hand, I gradually moved to TrackIR once I got used to the thrustmaster, although I prefer the hat switch the TrackIR does wonders keeping track of bogeys
as long as you get used to it - and it will take months - far easier to learn the new stick/throttle then gradually upgrade into Track IR.
I generally fly Track IR for main arena, but I still am not comfortable since buying it in March to use for Scenarios and FSO yet, my SA is quite fine with the hat switch, I would put it with the best in the game, TRackIR will improve the SA eventually, but right now I think it takes far to long getting adjusted to it.
My biggest problems is snap shots, and deflections - having to twink the trackIR enough so that I can snap back into regular view, then use my buttons on the joystick to seat myself for the shot - with the hat switch you simply let it go and it takes you to the default position, sometime that takes time really.
This is really debatable, some would probably say TrackIR improved them, I believe it will - however the stick was the major boost in my flying.

Been using thrustmaster products for the last 15 years and couldn't be happier. The scripting/programability, the cool metal feel, and the hall effect sensors make it the best stick I've used yet. If you're not using the macros and features that are available with the programming you're missing out.
TrackIR was MEH for me... used it off and on in aces, but never was able to get to the same effectiveness as using my hat switches; however, I do however use it religiously in other simulators and games.
Just found the warthog-> $345 with free shipping -> http://www.gadgetneeds.net/thrustmaster-2960720-hotas-warthog-joystick/

I've never understood the need to "re-seat" for a shot. :headscratch:
Why is that? If you turn your head and pick up a target, then track the target across the nose of your plane, isn't your gunsite right where it's supposed to be? :salute

Problem is depending where the con is your gun sight is disappeared from the view, which makes deflection shots annoying if not impossible at times - ill post some screenshots to show what I mean -
Basically with the Hat switch and "seating" in my plane I can judge where he crosses in front of me, with TrackIR the gunsight tends to be hidden, leading to spraying either above or below the aircraft even if you jump to center view.
Its something that takes time and practice and I simply haven't gotten used to it.

Butcher, try enlarging the dead band where your site is when your facing forward - it will then give a kinda snap when it moves to the right position. Not sure how to explain it, but the deadband thing works for me (my gunsite used to move all over the place due to little movements of me big heavy head)

much appreciated, I am not sure when ill fly again - I'm kind of in a cooling off period of flying, if i do ill certainly give it some more time rather then shutting it off.

This is exactly it. I scale the head movement so it is very slow on center, both vertically, and laterally, then fast as I move of center. This gives me full range when you bob your head off the side, but prevents having to scan your head round to see the reticle when you are on center. :aok
Also a good tip is to uncheck the Symetric setting in the vertical axis, and turn the "down" very very low, but leave the "up" to be slow in the beginning and fast the further you move. This stops the "sinking" that happens when you move your head forward but still allows you to easily "prairy dog" your head up for looks behind you or over the nose. there is almost never a reason to have your head sink into your chest. To look down, the rotation axis does all the work. The 'vertical' axis just makes problems if it is allowed to move lower than the home position, so just urn it way down or even off.
the reticle moves wit hyour head on a reflector gun sight, so if you see it, it's aligned. the only problem I ever have is with the gun sight on an A20 because it's not a reflector, it's two needles that you must be lined up behind. so I sometimes have to re-center in the A20. Also the same goes for Tank gunsight aiming. I have a macro that turns the tracker off when in the firing sight.

So I was missing the throttle component from the saitek stick I had so I decided to get TrackIR 5 with a pro clip.
The TrackIR should be here in another day or two... I'm stoked!
Back to the "missing throttle" well I just went cheep on a Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas X. I'm saving for the rest of my pit buildout.
225.00 bucks for both was a win for me!
:salute For solid advice from everyone Ty!

OMGBBQWTFPWN!!! I wub you TrackIR 5!
Must say im very glad for the feedback which swung my vote to a "handsfree view" with everyone talking about it.
I had it shipped to work so when I got it I would ::cough:: take my lunch break... Took about ten minutes to get everything jelly. I wont say much more than this: holy*%+@**barbastrisand*@/# YES!!! Dont think about it just buy it!
