Title: Light AA guns to be placed around the countryside
Post by: Karnak on July 26, 2012, 04:51:20 PM
I would like quad 20mm and single 37mm AA batteries placed around the countryside so that there is some disincentive to fly at extremely low altitudes.  Right now all the disincentive for base taking groups is focused on high altitude attacks.  This wouldn't stop low altitude surprise attacks, but if the guns are common enough it might cause some losses during the sneak flight.

Didn't we use to or still have the trains with the guns on them that would shoot at you if you came to close?  I remember beign shot down alot by them but its been a while since I've even seen one.  I can't remember if the trains were just near strats or not.

Trains resupplied the factories and still do.

You just don't get near them anymore ;)

If your wish comes true, it would be just my luck that I would try to ditch my damaged plane (in an attempt to avoid death) by one of your single batteries.  I have enough difficulty with the trees...  :frown:

Imagine getting in a great fight down near the deck and getting clobbered by an A.I. gun that just happens to be there.  Kind of like puffy hits from a CV group you can't even see.
+1 on the intent of the wish, but it wouldn't really deter much of an NOE horde (a bunch of low aircraft could all target the gun together and neutralize it pretty easily) but could ruin a good fight in the middle of no-man's land.  Would rather have more guns on airfields to shred vulchers.

In AW some of the mountain peaks had AAA on them.

I shoot trains all the time.

I like the idea of the original poster but would like to add some random manned ack.

No, if you want to deter NOE raids, add more radar towers. We already have those barns with a tower next to them as a terrain decoration. Why not make them actually work for the country that controls the most base in that sector?

Half the range of field radar with a longer update time but it will detect everything at all alt including below 65 feet.

Forces fights, doesn't hurt anyone, and the model is already there. If the tards that want to NOE a base into oblivion want to achieve their goal, then all they have to do is send out 1/60 of their mission to go and look for the towers.

I believe any ack has to be tied to a base or other large asset.

In WWII they did have AA guns hidden around bases right?

How about flak towers? Even today in Berlin and other German cities you still see the ruins of flak towers. I think there are flak towers in the city on our maps now. I never fly to the city so I could be wrong. But flak towers on flight paths to bases could put a damper on low level base taking missions.

Why? Just because some people prefer to spend 10 minutes climbing to the thin air? I'd rather spend that time in a fight, and prefer to not have to climb over 12k or so...even then I'm usually 5k below everyone else and have to bait them to come down. So I like the low-alt base-take attempts and fighting amongst the trees and hills.

Besides, anyone can "fight" with 20,000' of air under them. It takes skill and control to fight when there's 5,000' or less under you, because you need to consider the ground and other obstacles as well as your foe - and maneuver your plane into a favorable firing position.  ;)

It's exactly the other way around. At high altitudes the usable performace envelope is getting smaller and smaller, the room between compression and stall gets smaller and smaller...  you gotta use the brain more than the muscles up there. :)
More flying, less airquake'n...  :P

I withdraw the suggestion.  I posted in a moment of pique at all the below radar base sneaking.  The effect on low altitude furballs would be unacceptable in my opinion.

I was already wondering...  ;)

In my case flying close to the ground or the water is a challenge because my frame rate is in the teens and I have all my graphics off so I can still play. The ground and water look like a drunken 4 years finger paintings to me. High fights are better but low down to the ground are way more fun. But this has nothing to do with this thread as is seems to have been hijacked lol.
