Title: Fire suppression
Post by: Melvin on July 29, 2012, 05:48:16 PM
I would like fire suppression systems to be modeled into the AH world, especially for multi- engined aircraft.

How would it work? What exactly would the mechanics be? Would it be automatic, or would you have to do it on your own?

And correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the fire supression systems on bombers for the engines? Cause the fires in AH are clearly fuel fires.

Its just where the fire is represented visually. That doesn't mean thats where the fire is actually occuring, or where it started.

it would have to be manually activated. HTC would have to model engine fires because we currently have none. and self sealing fuel tanks wouldnt be to bad of an idea on the planes that had them...

Planes with self sealing tanks already have them.  Note how much more often the A6Ms and G4M burn than almost anything else.

I guess it might work if you have a button for fighting engine-fires, that you have to push in time. Would be more usefull for bombers than anything else, as (IIRC) they're the ones that most often had fire supression systems, and they're the ones  that get to roll around in F3 mode so they can keep an eye out for fires at all times.

How did fire suppression systems work in WW2?  Did they have a CO2 system connected to the motors?

The A6M series pumped CO2 from the engine into the fuel tanks to fill the vacant space left by consumed fuel to try to limit the gasoline vapors which are the most flammable.

I know this isnt Fighter ace. here goes....that old bad looking dead game that was worthless had fire supression.
cut your throttle and dive if done in time the fire would go out and you could usually limp home

That may have been a nice game mechanic, but it doesn't really simulate a fuel fire.  Fires were a Very Bad Thing(tm) and the vast majority of the time resulted in the complete loss of the aircraft and much of the crew.
