Many people remember a fallen soldier as a person in uniform.
Let us not forget, that somtimes it's the four legged buddy who just saved your life becuase he's a bomb-sniffing dog.

It's amazing what service dogs do for people, not just military but also the civilian . My wife's
been using a service dog for the last 7 years and she would be lost without her, we recently found out
that she(the dog) may have cancer, it will be terrible for her(my wife) if this is found to be correct.

I know the North Vietnamese soldiers hated our dogs and targeted both dog and handlers. Dogs will follow us any where and no other animal is so close to us humans. As a soldier and a police officer I never worked with K-9 units myself but was always glad to see them in the field with us.

:salute to these dog teams, they were invaluable in the bush in the 60's, saved so many lives then and now decades later. :salute

About 4,000 dogs served in Vietnam. They did their jobs well and gave their lives to protect their human comrades. They deserved far better treatment than they got when the war was winding down,Many were Euthanized, and the others were just left to fend for them self's!Our four legged buddies deserved a fate better than that!

Im very active when it comes to the rights of our four legged friends. Many that are frieds with me on facebook already know this but I especially fight against BSL Laws and fight for pitbulls, which are the most misunderstood breed due to ignorance. Sadly enough these beautiful babies in these pics were once concidered dangerous and were misunderstood also. I have seen these pics before and they always make me sad because these dogs went thru hell at on time simply because of what they looked like and my lovable pitbull breed are fighting that battle. I just wish it would end and people would judge based on the deed not the breed. :salute to our four legged soldiers past present and future.
-
True, Betty. Fought that fight in 60-70's over our 'evil', 'devil dog' dobermans...now it's switched to American Pit-Bulls, which were considered steller family dogs in 1890's.

As a police Officer over the years I have had to shoot nine dogs eight of them were bit bulls. I had to shoot four all at once because the mother of a a man we were trying to arrest on a warrant turned them lose on us in her fenced yards were we were struggling to cuff her son. We arrested her also and charged her with aggravated assault and animal cruelty and I felt bad for the dogs.
I think I read the city of Cleveland band ownership of pit bulls inside the city limits. Just last week a man in our neighborhood and his dog were attacked by a pit bull on our street. I have a very bad view of this breed of dog because of my personal dealing with them. Why do you think that pit bulls have this reputation? Maybe it is the people who own them that do this to the dog it is a mystery to me. I have noticed that a lot of the hoodlums and drug dealers in one of the areas I worked as a Cop had pit bulls.
-
They have a bad reputation for the simple reason when they bite they do not let go.
lethal.most dogs, all others will. They where bred for that, firstly to attack a bull, leap at its muzzle and hang on forever..
they do that with a fight with another dog...lethal
with a child..tragic..
they can and do have a heart of gold, obviously dependent on owners, but genetically they bring a gun to a knife fight and are lethal.
I love dogs, but I understand this situation.
-
Its a myth that their jaws lock, and..german shephards and rottis were found to have more pressure in their bite than a pitbull. Any dog can be mean, its how they are trained. Hell im scared of little dogs and will walk up to a stray pit before walking up to a stray chi chi any day. You cant blame the breed. Blame the owner. Its discrimination. For example...i was in an abusive marriage but I dont think ALL men are bad. Yes pitbulls have found their way into the hands of the wrong owners but the millions of them that didnt are great dogs, some used for special needs children, border partol, police dogs and rescue dogs. They arent all bad.

I totally missed that plaque ackack...thats neat. Makes me angry that after alot of dogs serve our country they just toss them away. Ive seen them end up in shelters. They dont last long people find out they are retired military or police dogs and they get adopted quickly but its still sad they end up there in the first place.

Trust in me my friend for I am your comrade.
I will protect you with my last breath.
When all others have left you
And the loneliness of the night closes in,
I will be at your side.
Together we will conquer all obstacles
And search out those who might wish harm to others.
All I ask of you is compassion,
The caring touch of your hands.
It is for you that I will selflessly give my life
And spend my nights unrested.
Although our days together
May be marked by the passing of the seasons.
Know that each day at your side is my reward.
My days are measured by
The coming and going of your footsteps.
I anticipate them at the opening of the door.
You are the voice of caring when I am ill.
The voice of authority over me when I’ve done wrong.
Do not chastise me unduly
For I am your right arm,
The sword at your side.
I attempt to do only what you bid of me.
I seek only to please you and remain in your favor.
Together you and I shall experience
A bond only others like you will understand.
When outsiders see us together
Their envy will be measured by their disdain.
I will quietly listen to you
And pass no judgement.
Nor will your spoken words be repeated.
I will remain ever silent,
Ever vigilant, ever loyal.
And when our time together is done
And you move on in the world,
Remember me with kind thoughts and tales.
For a time we were unbeatable,
Nothing passed among us undetected.
If we should ever meet again on another field
I will gladly take up your fight.
I am a Military Working Dog and together
We are GUARDIANS of the NIGHT.

at one point the APBT was America's Dog...it was called the "nanny dog" it would never attack a human except to protect his family...or listening to his owner....it would never attack its owner....and further more they made the worst guard dogs because they loved humans in general.....the were breed to fight dogs but love humans....and they are the greatest dog ever made, but the are almost extinct now.
the dogs that are attacking people called "pitts" "pitbulls" are not the same dog, the have been breed into a completely new breed, called an AmStaff----American Staffordshire terrier-----
not the same dogs.

The only thing my boys are guily of is not being able to hold their licker! I work with rescues and volunteer at my local shelter. Ive seen pitbulls in horrendous conditions due to abuse some by fire, acid burns and starvation yet they still wag their tails and still want love. They are the most loving and loyal dog you will ever own. They still have the nanny dog blood in them...they will always be the nanny dog! Self appointed guardians to your family. You never have to train them, they know when someone has ill intent.
-
I did not have the opportunity to work with any of the Pups while I was deloyed...many Sappers were originally tapped to go to England and attend the Mine Dog Course but never got the chance. But they are just as important as the men who partner up with them. They are considered soldiers just the same and it is always sad to see them give their lives to save so many others.

Great thread guys :aok,
Betty, glad to hear you are taking up the fight for pitbulls :aok, all the ones I know that have a good family are wonderfull loving pets. Being a GSD owner, it always brings a tear to my eye reading through some of this, as I know how smart, loyal, and protective of family, they are. Mine was a rescue with a very hard puppy hood, but he finally found a loving family in us and has been a great dog. Around family and friends he's as loving as can be, but very wary of strangers (if mommy and daddy aren't around). I never have to lock the doors when he's home :lol.
