Title: P38 Landing gear mirrors not mirrored yet
Post by: doright on August 04, 2012, 12:38:06 AM
Just thought a mention a major environmental mapping oversight. The mirrors on the P38's inside engine nacelles don't reflect. Would be a nice touch.

First, the only thing I know of skins is how to select them in the hanger. That being said I would assume the reflectivity in that area is specific to the skin and each skin may need to be redone to include it.

They've never reflected anything and probably never will and frankly not really needed in this game, the sound of the gears raising and lowering are enough to let you know if the gears are down or up in addition to the little green light in the cockpit.

You look around the internet and about half the WW2 pictures show the polished disk on olive drab fighters. You can assume bare metal fighters it will show as a refelction. And I see the disk included on at least two restored P38 in overall green paint.

This means at the least the all metal skins in the game should show the gear as some king of reflection going up and down. I suppose in refrence to the two restored P38, the professional restorers are not WW2 P38 historians of your caliber Ack Ack.

To be fair the last two photos show the disk either painted but you can see the outline of the disk.

My comment was about the mirrors in game.  They've never reflected anything and probably never will for the same reason why planes don't have a rear view mirror in game.  Even with bare metal skins it doesn't show the reflection of the landing gears, just reflection of the sunlight over the bare metal skin.

The nacel disk can probably be done with the same code as the glass reflections for the instraments. All that will happen is a looped series of images as reflections can be run when the P38 pilot hits the gear button. The real problem would be getting into a P38 cockpit to takes pictures while it's sitting then get the owner to allow a camcorder to be installed to film the disk during takoff and landing.

I cannot image that Hitech himself or some of our players don't have the contacts to get a film loop for say a case of Hitech's bribe. Or even out of freindship.

I thought that this would be a possibility with the new glass reflections. Would be a neat addition to a widely used a/c. But then I'm the type who will cycle the gear repeatly at sunrise/sunset to watch the shadow of it moving.
The instrument manufacturers and installers are some of the most precise I ever seen, every single instrument glass is perfectly in the same geometric plane.

Nice pic's bustr!
