Title: What Karnak really, secretly wishes for...
Post by: Karnak on August 04, 2012, 06:36:02 PM
I'm going to do something I haven't done in a decade, if I ever did.  I'm going to post a request for the three aircraft that I most want for myself with no consideration of what is good for the game or most bang for the buck.

#1: P-61B Black Widow.  I make no pretenses about this fighter being anything other that LWA fun.  It is just really a neat aircraft.  A huge, remarkably maneuverable, heavily armed and, admittedly, slow fighter.  It could also carry quite a few pounds of bombs.  It would be, perhaps, like an A-26 that could actually dogfight.  I think this would just be a lot of fun to play with.

#2: J2M3 and J2M5 Raiden 'Jack'.  Though produced in low numbers the Jack eschewed the normal Japanese focus on maneuverability in favor of good climb and speed performance.  Mitsubishi got the long, aerodynamic cowl over a radial engine to work where Focke-Wulf failed with the Fw190.  In post war flight tests American test pilots praised the handling of the Jack, being far more impressed with it than its Japanese pilots were.  Oh yeah, it has Fowler flaps like the P-38s, Ki-84 and N1K2-J as well.

#3: H8K2 'Emily':  Big azzed flying boat with a moderate bomb load, lots of armor, five 20mm cannons in turrets and good performance.  Oh yeah, lots of fuel.  Want to fly for 12 hours straight in AH (Fuel burn 2.0)?  Emily can give you that time.  This is the flying boat that would actually get used in significant numbers.  Heck, the Japanese even used it to bomb with in small formations.

Ok, there they are.  Tell me how wrong and stupid I am!  :p

I also wish for the j2m.

Back when warbirds brought it out, it was a brick and I enjoyed flying it because nobody else did and it was fast.

Then they changed the CoFL of the arena and it became uber in all areas and just wasn't the same.

Not so fast. The Catalina wasn't used to bomb many land targets and instead carried charges and anti-submarine capabilities. It was also used much more for reconnaissance. The last thing this game needs (and this was before I gave up my stick, so I don't know if it is still the same) is another American craft just cuz it'd balance things out. The Japanese in the game needed some additions back then, and I don't think HTC could add 6 or so Japanese craft in the year I've been gone (A6M3 anyone  :D ).

While you could make an argument for the Consolidated Catalina due to its anti-ship capabilities, is that not something the H8K2 could do???

I've been away for a while so if I'm in the wrong, lemme know.

H8K2 could carry two torpedoes.  Bombwise it carried eight 250kg bombs.  They had plans for two 1600kg bombs but that was never used apparently.  It would probably feel a bit odd to be doing a torpedo run in a large four engined airplane, but what the heck.

Performancewise the H8K2 was vastly better than the PBY-5, being more than 100mph faster and having much better climbing ability.

Guns and armor also favor the H8K2 with five 20mm cannon, three to five 7.7mm machine guns (including light ventral coverage with angles almost straight down).  For protection it had a fully protected fuel system as well as armor for the engines and each crew position, very well protected for a Japanese airplane.

Fully protected fuel system.

Probably be a flying fuel tank like a B-29.

I'm just a bit suprised nobody's started squalling about how the P-61 was a nightfighter.

+1 to all three, just after the IAR 80

I don't care.  :p

These are my selfish wants the same way some people ask for Ta183s and Do335s.

Letting the H8K up at ports would give it something no other bomber could do in the MA so it could see significant use there. I'd like to see a Ki 43 before the Jack. The P-61 would be fun in the MA but it is hardly realistic to use it as a day fighter and it has no scenario potential.

Any H8K's still survive today? museums or private collections?

If added to AH it would be the second largest airplane in the game with a 124ft 8in wingspan.

Let's call busa-sensei to provide any information of Japanese planes.  :D
He's best Japanese WW2 aviation reseacher who provided resourse to other WWII japanese plane simulation. :aok

I agree that AH is rather limited in Japanese plans as well as Italian planes. There are many Japanese planes missing from the plane set, some of which had very high production numbers.

What is wrong with the Betty?  It was notorious for being easy to catch on fire in real life.

Would like to see the Emily as well and then maybe the PBY and have them enabled at ports. As for night fighters, I say no unless they come with working onboard radars, but really many other sims model these, so why not AH? the WW2 radar sets were not very sophisticated anyways and even in daylight ops a night fighter can get a BVR fix on a con and at least get an alt approximation of up to say 5 miles or so? through cloud. Might be usefull sometimes...even without "night".

Sounds good in theory, but I don't think practical (as opposed to theoretical) range was that great.  Some actual combat accounts would be interesting.  Here's a link for what appear to be theoretical ranges: http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ref/NightFighterRadars/index.html

On the topic of the OP, I would be interested in the Emily at ports.

:aok I like the P-61B and i wish that there was better night fighting but thats probably not going to happen so having the plane would be nice.

From the link:

Quote
Performance
Max. Reliable Range on: Bombers, at 10,000 ft: 17,000 yd.

Thats actually @ 9 1/2 miles or so.

Its not far but I would still like them with working radars.
