It's the first video on the front page right now. What with Syria shooting down an F4 from Turkey recently, this is pretty interesting news watching their rebel AAA vs their own Air Force. Pretty rare nowadays to have video of a high performance fighter bomber being shot down. It sounds like a fairly low rate of fire AAA system, any of you x USAF/NAVY experts care to comment?
It's fairly frightening for me to consider that AAA is accurate enough to have a single unit/system be able to drop a Fighter moving that fast and that low just like THAT, POW. Is radar AAA this effective or did the gunners just luck out? I wonder if it was the same thing with the F4 from Turkey? I would be interested to know if any of the Pantsir S-1 SA22 systems have fallen into rebel hands, because it reportedly is the system that was used on the F4, and is supposed to be really effective.
Also, I was amazed at how long that Mig27 or 23 burned and kept flying without exploding. I've read that the Russian aircraft are built fairly tough, but I would have expected a much larger and final "kaboom" with a fire burning like that, not have it fly off into the sunset for as long as it did.

I heard somebody yelling something about snack bars?

That pilot didn't look like he was trying very hard to not get shot.

keep in mind all ya gotta do is detonate 1AAA round in front of the intake & the jet does the rest for you. :salute

Dad said they look like phone poles coming up at you.

He is yelling, "Allahu Akbar", translated to English, "Allah is greater." as well as saying that it has caught fire. As for the end, where they are actually speaking in sentences, I'm confused. I can only understand a few words in Arabic.

Pretty sickening to hear that considering you usually hear that demented chanting in IED videos by insurgents.
-
Why did some one scribble all over the video in the top-left of the screen?
-
"Allahu Akbar" isn't really anything more unusual or serious than guys from our western culture saying "thank God" or "praise the Lord" when something good happens. It doesn't (necessarily) mean they're religious fanatics.

I don't believe they were thinking religion at all..... more like terrorist.

I have a hard time seeing a civilian uprising against an oppressive regime and fighting military forces as "terrorism".

Agree!
I failed to add.... I do not think this terrorism. I only mean that folks are used to hearing terrorist mutter the same type phrases.
When you don't speak the language you can only relate sounds. Certainly does not mean the folks are the same types or beliefs.

Ah... I misunderstood the meaning of your previous post. I'm just a silly foreigner after all... :)

We never would have been. The Germans discovered to their cost that "they would have to break us in this island or lose the war"
They couldn't match us in the air and the might of the Royal Navy would have obliterated them in any invasion attempt. Hitler gave up trying in 1940.

There are sources that say otherwise. Such as my in class history book, but hey history is written by the victor(s).

Yes but the missiles coming from above were usually a more pressing issue.

You mean Op Sealion was a success, the Few were annihilated and Ze Chermans won :uhoh
I would suggest that in actual fact the history here is pretty clear. Whilst the air battle was a close run affair and could have been won by sticking to airfield denial tactics, the Germans had very limited combat time over the UK, if the fields at Manston and Hawkinge, Biggin etc had been destroyed then the fighters would have operated from deeper inland and would still have been able to provide air cover for the fleet, which in 1940 was unsurpassed and would have mullered any landing attempts.

If the US wasn't sending supplies to the Brit, they wouldn't have any planes to defend at all. :ahand

Oh. So you did win the Battle of Britain for us after all. Thanks for that.
And 'sending supplies' makes the U.S sound hugeley benevolent, and not, as is the case, making massive profits for selling supplies at a rate which has kept us paying huge remittances still, over 70 years later. Bearing in mind Lend Lease was not signed until 1941 I doubt there was too much in the way of aid during the summer of 1940 :salute

Danny its obvious you've wasted your time on education and not Hollywood.
Otherwise you wouldn't have a realistic view of the Battle of Britain

Had hitler knew the actual numbers, he WOULD have kept attacking, all he would have had to do was cut off the american shipping coming in with guns ammo plane parts and pilots and FOOD that were constantly being sent.
Britian had a hand full of working aircraft without the CONSTANT flow of materials and FOOD coming to the mainland island. Do not think for a second the BoB was won by overwhelming numbers, it was not. Lets also not forget if they had simply dropped hundreds of little strips of aluminum your radars would have been all but kaput, leaving any tactical advantage to incoming aircraft.
Simply put, im glad he did stop, and im glad they never figured out a way to cut off the shipping lanes, and im glad they never used chaffs to scramble the radars like we did to THEM in the 44-45's. Im also glad the germans never put wing tanks on the 109's with that they would have been able to make it back over the channel without ditching. (look it up, massive amounts were lost due to running out of gas, NOT because they got shot down by enemy gun fire OR outflown by british pilots.)
and i am in no way shape or form discounting the actions made by the british people or the military, they all deserve massive amounts of respect, and they HAVE mine.

Little too much patriotism you think?
Lighten up Francis, it was meant as a joking comment on the whole "USA kick butt" mentality. I'm glad the Brits fought as hard as they did, and I'm glad the US aided the Brits as much as they did. They're both winners :cool. So lighten up and take a chill pill.

:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl
Had hitler knew the actual numbers, he WOULD have kept attacking, all he would have had to do was cut off the american shipping coming in with guns ammo plane parts and pilots and FOOD that were constantly being sent.
He actually believed we had less aircraft than we actually did have, he was told by his bumsucking lackies like Goring that the RAF had been almost completely wiped out. German claims for the BOB numbered some 3000+ British aircraft destroyed!
The CONSTANT flow of food and materials from the US didn't begin until March 1941 under Cash and Carry scheme, Lend Lease came into effect 11th December 1941 after US had declared war on Germany, (and Britain had used up most of it's gold deposits on Cash and Carry)
Britain did only have a handful of aircraft available at the time, quite a big handful actually, 600 Hurricanes and Spits were airworthy at the end of the Battle of France, plus another 300 in storage, a figure that grew rapidly throughout the rest of the battle. Between June and October British aircraft manufacturing produced 2354 aircraft of all types, the Germans produced 975.
They were however initially outnumbered 3 - 4 to 1 by Luftwaffe aircraft during the battle. The issue was never about fighter numbers, it was always a lack of trained pilots available that limited operational numbers.
They never figured out how to cut shipping lanes because the JU87/88's that were sent to carry this out were more often than not picked up on radar and intercepted by Coastal Command.
The British developed a number of anti radar devices, Window being one of them although it was not used by allied bombers until 1943 because of fears that the Germans would soon copy it and deploy it against the allies, they did however use jamming devices such as Mandrel and Tinsel early on in the war. The Germans didn't use "chaff" like devices because they were unaware of them at the time of the Battle of Britain. And no amount of chaff or radar would have succeeded in jamming the observer corps
Again, the Germans didn't use wing tanks, they were not available at the time, Adolf Galland, in his book "The First and the Last" states that the lack of combat range limited the battle to just 10% of the UK mainland, making any attempt at air superiority and therefore invasion impossible. You are correct, he also states that a large number of aircraft were lost through running out of fuel, but he attributes this more to the Germans being unable to co-ordinate bomber and fighter groups efficiently, causing fighters to circle and wait for bomber groups to form up.
and i am in no way shape or form discounting the actions made by the British people or the military, they all deserve massive amounts of respect, and they HAVE mine.
And I am in no way discounting the actions or bravery of American pilots who selflessly volunteered to fight for the UK in RAF squadrons and later in Eagle squadrons, their example is one of extreme selflessness and courage :salute

The Brits helped us as much as we helped them. The US would not have won a war against Germany and Japan without the UK.
In fact they've never quit helping us. Their soldiers have been giving life and limb to this very day in the same cause that ours do.
I spent three years stationed in the UK during the early 80s and the British people and their armed forces left me with a very high impression of them both.
You're the one that should lighten up then maybe smarten up. Just saying.
