Title: Me410 half wing gone acts like whole wing?
Post by: Krusty on August 14, 2012, 01:10:44 AM
I mentioned something like this here:

http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,336390.msg4445810.html#msg4445810

and superfly replied:

Krusty, can you screen shot that please?

I didn't get one with the damage up at the time, but I had it happen again just now. Got it on film too if needed.

[edit: that's cropped and downsized, my screenshots are 3840x1024, so I had to cut the damage part and past it back onto the cropped picture]

Looks like half the wing gone, acts totally uncontrollable. Full rudder, full aileron over, full trim over, and nothing... You can barely hold the remaining wing facing "up" instead of rolling around with maximum inputs.

Shouldn't half a wing still be controllable and flyable, like most other planes in the game? At least to a certain extent? I wasn't at stall speeds either, probably near 250 ish if I had to guess. I was closer to 300-350 the first time it happened.

It's that way on all planes.  There aren't multiple damage messages for each wing.

Okay, but here's the issue: Half the wing is still intact, and the engine is still running, but it's not possible to control. It's acting like all the entire wing is gone.

To clarify for Krusty, he is stating (specificaly in regards to the 410) that 50% physical damage to the individual wing structure (as indicated currently in game visualy and by the damage list) feels and acts in flight an aweful lot like total/100% loss of the entire wing structure (including the fully operational engine on the occasions where it's still attached and running).

It's that way on all planes.  There aren't multiple damage messages for each wing.

Would not apply to this issue.

I think it could use a second look, make sure it's working as intended, half a wing missing in the 410 really does feel as bad as the whole thing is missing, including the operating engine on that damaged wing.  I suspect it may be as intended though, the 410 wasn't exactly known for having wonderful flight charateristics with all its parts attached, or making it home (if even given the chance) after taking a beating.

Every other plane in the game shy of the bombers maintains some marginal control. All of the fighters seem to have breakable wingtip parts that reduces lift but allows you to make it back with a lot of careful piloting.

Even the horrid Fw190, with its atrocious wing loading, worthless flaps, and high stall speed, can make a landing mission 1 wingtip. If you're good, I mean.

Well Krusty, remember that both engines torque to the left. Also, if you look at a 410 from the top you'll see that there isn't much wing between the fuselage and enginge nacelle. You seemed to handle the 410 ok after I removed your right wing when we ran into each other in the MA earlier.

I really couldn't handle it. I was going in regardless of you finishing me off. It was going into that lost wing.

I don't think it's a matter of wing area left. Look at P-51s, 47s, 38s, other big, heavy planes with high wing loading. Even the FW, as I mentioned, with its worst wing loading, can still retain some control.

I have been able to Fly an I-16 with half i wing gone and it took about 5-10 minutes to crash

Going to have to agree with that point.

That is why I suspect it's fatal with loosing so much wing, but why then have the rest of the wing even stay attached then?  Krusty's arguement that almost every other plane seems to have it's "half" wing damamge modeled so you loose all but the bare minimum required for maintained flight has some merit in this game.

The "half" (or an additional) breaking point could be moved closer out to the tip on the 410, but maybe that conflicts with the ailerons or slats somehow?
