Title: Committed Assets
Post by: Letalis on August 19, 2012, 02:38:45 AM
So there I was, flying into a very lightly defended field.  The town and field were both deacked and the VH was soft.  Only a single GV out.  No enemy aircraft up.  The three fighters trying to white flag the last few buildings in town all ran out of ammo.  Thankfully we were relieved on station by... 3 C-47s :uhoh  It occured to me this happens all the time.

Yes there is a mission editor, but many base grabs simply develop spontaneously.  In these cases there is no leader or msn vox and any coordination takes place via pleas for X or Y at base Z over country channel.

It would be nice for people interested in base takes to have the option of selecting a target field.  (Available in preferences)  IE:  Player X wants to help the efforts at A15.  He selects A15 as his target and a "Committed Assets" page comes up.  Player X sees a list of players who have already selected A15 as their target (broken down by perk category).  Also, player X would be able to see their aircraft/vehicle type here as well.  When player X takes off he shows up on the list just like everyone else till he lands/towers out.  Each player present on the list would have a text box next to his name where he could update intentions or requests pertinent to the target.  Player X can now join the fight confident that he will effectively be contributing to the fight as opposed to being the 10th M3 to arrive at a town occupied by tanks.

You would be unlikely to see more than 3% to ever use this feature were it added.

Unless when you take off and select you runway you had a check box such as:

A. Combat Air Patrol
B. Attacking field number ....
C. Bombing Opportunity Targets
D. Defence of field number ....

Sounds awfully complicated and I tend to change my mind a lot in flight. :headscratch:

It would only be a ball park figure but at least may give some help. I am not necessarily advocating the concept, merely offering a possible means whereby it could work.

What do you change your mind about? Whether to HO or Ram or a combination? :headscratch:

Depends on my best guess as to the pilot's name and potential for whine (and tears) extraction.  Some are far more generous with said outpouring than others.  <Hint>    :devil

Even Knits get frustrated at losing bases or poor coordination on offense from time to time.  I'm betting even on Knights this number would get a zero behind it.  Also, with just 15-20 guys well coordinated you're well ahead of the necessity for 40-50 people to just "pile on" per status quo.  It's a force multiplier and people would quickly recognize it imho.

PS:  I like the "defense of base X" option too, great thought!  :aok

Its strange that you devote so much effort in to leaving everybody in no doubt, that their opinion of you is correct :salute

Good thought and prolly THE best way to go about it.  Prob is nobody wants to leave their squad vox and put up with all the random chatter.  This is a "chatterless", nice, quiet way of doing business.   :airplane:

Other than complaining that everyone in the arena isn't fighting the war the way they want to, the most common thing I hear the pocket
adolfs say,  "Anyone grab a goon for field XXX?" ad nauseum..funny that.  People want to grab bases, but they'd prefer someone else do the
dirty work

I Do like the idea. I think if you right click an enemy base there should be a option for "Assests in route". Before take off you have the option to enable the option to post your intentions during sortie (Same menu as Tracers and autofilm)

Maybe have a way that if someone ups after you hitting the same field it shows up on your text buffer.

JoeSnuffy upped a C47 with 10X Troops

JoeSnuffy upped a P51 with 2X 1000 pounders and 6 rockets

There will always be "pocket Adolfs", I'm resigned to that fact.  The idea is to let people help quietly without the need to make speeches or look like an African dictator on country in order to take one silly base.

In the meantime I suggest posting small pickup missions.  Limit the # of slots and put a short timer on it.  People will join even if you're doing something boring but important like porking a field.

Maybe something is simpler is needed
once you take off you can simple click on the field you intend to attack in your clipboard and if you change your mind simple click on another field
and if you're looking to see whats coming to the intended base you simple right-click and a list of everyone who has selected that base comes up with their aircraft specs
