Title: Observer app
Post by: Midway on August 19, 2012, 07:52:47 AM
I wish for porting an observer only version of Aces High to the iPad. Some thoughts on this:

- The app could create a lot of interest in AH and may result in more players signing up for the full PC version.

- Watching live action by real people on an ipad can be more fun than watching a movie.

- Xplane, a very complex flight sim run by less than a handfull of people ported the sim to iPad so it may not be that difficult.

- When signing in on iPad, no player names are visible, only aeroplane types and you can choose to join any that are in flight to observe without having to ask permission.

- For those that can not play on their PC, they can enjoy the action while out and about, for example while waiting to pick up kids at school, doctor's office, etc...

- A simple interface to allow for looking around and joining a list of aeroplanes or GVs by type is all that's needed.

- Sensitive items like location of CVs, or even the entire map, could be hidden from view.

 :)

This is mostly intended for people not yet subscribed, in other words have never heard of Aces High.  The IPad app could generate a lot of buzz.  :aok

true but it seems like a lot of work for the HTC staff

Cannot help but like this idea, despite an overwhelming urge to repeatedly kick Midwife in the fork.
However I think callsigns being shown would be a good idea. Potential players watching a massive group of 'pilots' fighting furiously for a vulch opportunity would make them think " Woah, that could be me" :joystick:

This seems like it would be a massive undertaking with practically no return on the investment.

XPlane did it quickly and with limited resources (while also working on upgrading versions) for their flight sim.  That's why I thought this may be easier than it looks.

I'd think the wishlist is simply that. No idea is a bad idea (as some blinkered fool once said).
I am certain some wishlist posts have.made the game what it is today. I dont know how long it would take and how much effort is involved, but I think its still reasonable to wish for destructible trees and.floozies in towns throwing themselves naked across the engine decks of the latest.conquering tanks when you enter a town. After all its a wishlist. I wish for a lottery win and Kate Winslet to come over for an intimate pajama party. It ain't gonna happen but I wish nevertheless.

Truthfully I have become wholly ambivalent about the whole idea now anyway. Probably the wine

is the proper word funny or ironic?   watching on the ipad people crying and whining about one thing or another.

Ive said it before and il say it again. I mean no disrespect by this, We pay $15 a month. We shouldnt really concern ourselves by the workload put on the HTC staff, to an extent. After all, We pay their Paychecks!

So it would attach the person to some random player? What happens then is that you end up seeing lots of flying, a little combat, and lots of dying.

Worse would be when they get attached to a spawn camper. I mean the Panther making kills from 2000+m away would be an impressive feat to someone whos never played, but after about 5 minutes, it would get SOOO boring.

No, there is a list of aeroplanes/GVs currently in flight.... so you pick, for example, Spitfire MK VIII.  Then there is a list of all those in flight and next to each one it says how long in flight, how many kills so far, and maybe the k/d of the pilot.  You pick one (either one just upping (a few seconds in flight) or one already in flight five minutes or whatever).  You can pick a pilot with a high k/d if you want to pick someone good...

I'm sure there are many ways to do this... these are just examples... whatever objections you come up with, I'm sure there's a solution with a few minutes thought. :aok

If you don't like that flight after you pick it, you just pull up the list and pick another.  Something simple like that.  :)

I don't have any idea what Hitech wants as regards new subscribers, but as for myself I'm not thrilled at grabbing the mayfly attention
spanners at all.  AH has much too steep a learning curve for those guys.  Same goes for porting AH to iPads, I don't think we'd be doing
the arenas any favors by swamping them with xBox-like gamer folks.

Mike downloads the free app, watches it for a while and thinks "that looks fun, I'll try that!", goes to the App Store and theres no AH ... forgets about it and moves on.
