Title: uTorrent program
Post by: mthrockmor on August 19, 2012, 07:24:36 PM
I think this should be the right place. While a technical question it is not related to game performance.

My daughter downloaded softward to pirate music. I have received notices from our internet provider that pirating has been tracked to our ip address. I want to remove it from this computer but I cannot find it. Other then the "add remove programs" button how can I find it and remove it?

Thanks in advance!
Boo

Although some sites don't require a torrent program to download. For an example Zippyshare.

If you have a router, you can search online and find the ports that file sharing programs use. Get the port numbers and block them in the router

Then you just change the port. There is ways around if you want.

total waste of time tbh. Even locking it down on the desktop can prove ineffective with portable executables, or the likes of bitlet (java based bittorrent client).

Do you know which one she used?? ... If so .find out where it downloads it's files to...clear/remove that folder and then just uninstall....I haave no idea if it will ever totally remove it but as long as you get rid of the folder that it uses to copy to and share from it shouldn't be anymore trouble.

Wow, what a simple fix... like using a bulldozer to unearth fragile, archaeological specimens

A couple of things:

First, are you sure the email came from your Internet provider, and not some type of phishing email?

Second, if you did receive some type of email stating that pirating is being tracked to your IP, it could very well be due to files being shared, not downloaded.  So, look for programs that are running.

Use Windows' Task Manager to bring up the list of running programs.
Click on the 'Process' tab.
Check the box at the bottom that says 'Show processes from all users'.
Sort by name, just for ease.
Start searching in Google or Yahoo for the various program names, and see when a file sharing or peer-to-peer program is listed for your search.
Search the PC for that filename and start the removal process.  (see if there's an uninstaller, delete the file, or other means)

For an easier to read list, open a command box (start, accessories, command or click start, type cmd in the box above the start button) and type net start, hit enter. This will give you a list of currently running processes.
If you need to stop a process, type net stop and name of process as per list.

If you can give us the name of the torrent she's using, we can dig out removal instructions for ya too.

hope this helps,

Wurz

Depending on the ISP, they send out a little letter stating the above

Wurzel, NET START only shows the Windows Services that are running, not the programs.

Yup, thats why I said processes Mir, most torrent programs start automatically, and would have a running process (bit like itunes etc)

Wurz

Course, if it doesn't have a running process, this would be about as useful as tits on a fish!!

errrr, forget i typed anything, Mir is right, thats for services (in my defence your honor, I've not had coffee yet, and I've just got up)

lol...it starts with getting up. :)

Don't sweat it, Wurzel.  We're all just trying to help Boo before he ends up getting sued by the RIAA for $15 billion because his daughter is sharing Justin Bieber. :)

Do a search on your drive & find the file named uTorrent.exe

                          Delete it

Unlike most other software / programs, uTorrent does not have a simple uninstall program built into it.  Deleting the .exe file will take care of the program.

You will still have some registry entries.  There are many registry cleaning progams that are free that would get rid of the entries.  If your pc has some age on it, a registry cleaner might boost your speed (like if you've ever used TurboTax etc.)
