Post by: hlbly on September 01, 2012, 04:51:05 AM
Would like to find some comparisons of Chobham vs other forms of composite armor . Anyone with first hand knowledge ? Know of any sources ?

I imagine that data would be highly classified. considering who uses it, we can probably assume its the best out there :aok

Danny's your man on this point I think. I believe Chobham has now been superceded though.

It doesn't matter how effective it is when you drop even a measly little GBU-12 on it  :devil

Armor is for targets and its never enough.

Chobham in its various incarnations is by far the most effective advanced armour system. It will even keep out APFSDS rounds. Some of the reactive armour proved pretty special in its later forms but Fin would still make a hole.

A Challenger in Iraq rolled into a ditch and overturned. The baddies hit it multiple times (16-18) in the upturned belly with rpg's. When recovery teams got there and extracted the crew there were no injuries from any of the weapon strikes.

The Dorchester variant has had some teething issues however and appears not to be as effective initially as earlier Chobham . I believe there have been some casualties from rpg strikes which seems wierd. Possibly something to do with the air gaps narrowing around joints.

I woul like them to come up with a new version with a rubbery coating to prevent panzer rash :D

Does anybody know what kind of armor the Japanese used on their newer Type 10 MBT?  It seems extremely expensive for an MBT.

It's painted in extract of Godzilla skin.  Quite expensive due to rarity of Godzilla juicers.
