Title: "The Last Escape"
Post by: W7LPNRICK on September 02, 2012, 04:01:29 PM
I was watching this movie & some refugees w/ a German Rocket Scientist were listening to a portable wooden radio. Both the Russian & Germans were trying to catch them. The Russians were using a directional loop antenna to zero in on their "Receiver"   :D then a Lanc was trying to land to pic up all the refugees  :huh & got shot down by a 109...Hokey Explosion & random pieces flying around...  Oh well low budget WWII movie. Still better than a chick flick.  :old:

I haven't seriously messed around with Radio since about 98.. Since cellphone coverage
reached out here.. Some of my buds are starting up stations again, were bugging me to
get back on the air.. Was thinking about it, but I look up at my antenna, and it is covered
in nasty black residue, coax is blistered and ozone'd out, last SWR test says its shot..

I hate putting up antenna..  :frown:

But one of my Friends has horizontally cophased Y/quads, VERY COOL!

edit: With all the Solar activity, the Skip must be Screamin right now??

Strangely enough it's great some days & gone others.  While sun spots increase propagation, solar flares are sometimes disastrous on RF analog signals. I personally love mobile Hamming.  :old:

There was a vid on Youtube, of a guy in a PU Truck, with an overhead ladder rack.. He had it arranged, so a rotor motor, and a 4 element shooting star, could be mounted to the front end of an aluminum extension ladder.. The ladder was anchored to the rear
of the ladder rack, so it would pivot upright when he pulled the backend foot down to the ground, anchoring it to his trailer hitch..
Anchor ropes already attached at the top end.. Then pulled the rope to extend the ladder, the whole rig goes up super quick..

Tie the anchors, stab a ground, test SWR, adjust load, kick the heater on, and TX!

Really Cool!

Wow, was curious about the FCC rules, seems they have changed significantly since I
last paid attention.. Seems the 10 and 11 meter bands have been joined? Old restrictions
are gone.. Marine radio too.. WOW!

Buddies are telling me, the whole license thing has become almost irrelevant..
Everyone is using equipment that would have been illegal in 98.. Interesting..

Just reading up on this stuff, need to visit the certified radio tech in my area..
Old friend of mine, He'll know the real deal!

"Funny Channels on 11 meters(CB) still illegal even for hams d/t other gov't agencies using them. I had a non-licensed friend who had illegal radios who was caught, $2000 worth of radios confiscated & a moderate fine. It's too easy to be legal to justifying cheating, unless you're talking about FMS/GMRS $200 a years is ridiculous & no-one pays it. I have always believed the fed loves to have lots of laws they never enforce, so they can use them to burn people the are targeting.  :old:

I don't think they really care, unless you start bleeding on the Local Police or Air Traffic etc..
:lol But then, I have heard some seriously splattering stations, bleeding over whole bands..
You know, the old home built "Ammo Can" tube amps.. BUZZZZ SPLATTER BUZZZ!
I built a few of those back in the day!
