Title: Headset Recommendation
Post by: titanic3 on September 06, 2012, 03:13:52 PM
Anyone know a decent headset for under $150? Preferably under $100? Used for mostly gaming and music. I don't have a dedicated sound card, just an onboard Realtek. It'd also be neat if it had a detachable mic so I can listen to my iPod as well.  :)

I agree, I have one of these and its pretty awesome - however they did CANCEL the good pair... replaced it with cheaper less good version.

Its still not bad, best pair I ever had for headphones.

Hmm, seems low priced for a good headset. Usually, I get what I pay for. I'm hoping this is one of the exceptions?

Heil Proset Media was designed to be used by the Navy. The cord is much tougher than typical consumer brands and the mic is a higher quality dynamic cardioid. On their site Heil has it listed for $121 but you can shop around.

Hmm, $92 on Amazon, I might just buy it.  :) Now to wait for pay day.  :D

the G35 is OK but it's USB, it's a sound card plus a headset in one and is quite heavy. The fake 7.1 is useless and it actually gives me headaches.

That said the microphone, speakers and build are of very high quality. The music sounds awesome in it, no sign of weariness after 2 years, still feels brand new, and I've had no drivers issue with it. Its also quite comfortable despite its weight.

Cool, good to know.  :aok I don't have a dedicated sound card on my PC anyways so I think I'll be fine. I rarely put the headset on for most games, I just leave it around my neck. Battlefield BC2 and 3, Arma 2 and music though is another thing.  :)

Though it looks like I have to get a USB to3.5 for my iPod though.

?? USB to Jack 3.5mm converter is called a sound card in my book!

EDIT: I see now, you want to plug the USB headset into the ipod. That won't happen, this headset needs a computer to work.

One option: http://tbreak.com/tech/2012/09/asus-vulcan-pro-gaming-headphones-review/

If you haven't tried active noise cancellation before give it a try at some shop - it's amazing. Basically any humming fans etc. disappear like magic when you put the headphones on. I tried it first time (Bose quietcomfort 3) in a busy airport in Munich and it was a real surprise. Like stepping into an empty room and closing a heavy door behind you.

yes it's fake, only 2 speakers in the G35.

I have it set to Mono most of time, because I put only 1 ear in it, leave the other ear uncovered in case something happens or the girlfriend talks to me ^^

I have a Bose active noise cancellation headset I use on my weekday train commute - it's like my own personal cone of silence.

Aw, that sucks. And it's nice to have noise cancellation but I don't really need and I doubt my budget will allow it. I play in a relatively quiet place, although the the squaddies love the daily ice cream truck every time it drives by my house while on vent.  :lol

Download the logitec gaming software 8.30.

It has more settings than comes with CD. (Equalizer etc) :)

Wikipedia has a article about G35, discussing speakers etc

I know it is out of the price range and the feature set since the mic doesn't come off but I love my PC360 from Sennheiser. You might wan to take a look at a few of the Sennheiser sets without mics to see what they do and how they rate. I haven't had bad luck out of Sennheiser in about 10 years now and the PC150's that I bought still work great for my son.

I had the g35 headset and for what its worth, it was a good headset. The only drawback was the connection for the ear cup broke within a year and if you look it up you will see I wasn't the only person this happened to. The cord was super long, almost too long, 10 ft.

You should look at the reviews on different websites and go from there. I am currently using a http://us.store.creative.com/Creative-Sound-Blaster-Tactic3D-Sigma-Gaming/M/B0041OMWNY.htm tied in with my sound blaster sound card. The good thing is, its dual setting aka USB or 3.5 mm. If you go with the G35 you won't be unhappy but I preferred using the 3.5 mm jacks.

my headset has 3 speakers on each side. they sound awesome.   Also had the g35 with only 2, it was pretty good too, but it isn't the same as 3 speakers.

Actually it was the early red ones that had that problem.  The newer blue ones with black cushions haven't had the problem.  It's a great 5.1 headset!

All the Best...

that is awesome because I really liked them but I went for the traiton hd 5.1 has good sound but they dont sell them anymore.  they lasted me about7 months before I broke them but that was my fault.  having 3 speakers on each ear is way better than simulated surround sound.  I can tell the difference as I also had the g35.

Nope, PNG for spamming the boards and dragging up outdated posts. Voicing your opinion on one thread should get your point across well enough.

Really so the fact that I have posted in 6 different threads on the same product is not proof enough that people did not search the forum completely on this product to begin with?

If you were right there would only be one thread to begin with.

I disagree. If there is junk out there that doesnt work then there should be postings just like this one to warn everyone about the junk. Otherwise junk will only fill the hardware forum with more help requests. What Lyric did here was a service to anyone that comes along later and searches for information on this junk and they can see his warning.

If Skuzzy sees these threads and thinks a PNG should be given then its his decision to do that. I dont think adding your voice will add one bit of leaning in either direction which is why they have that other rule in there (rule 5).

This is not the first product critique on the topic and it wont be the last. Turtle Beach Z6A is junk. Dont buy it.

Ya we all know he's your little buddy there Skipper. The first post was a warning to consumers, by the third we were into spam, by the sixth we were into report country.

It was a bit over done and to say the least childish.

That's exactly what happened to mine. Thing's made out of peanut brittle.

And Fugi, I have to disagree. Unless your constantly scanning the entire bulletin board (with most of us having more important things to do), there's no guarantee that you'll see lyric's warning. I for one want to see lyric continue spreading the word so that no more people dump $100 down the drain.

You don't have to spend all your time scanning the boards to be informed search is your friend and if you use it you will find the info you seek. Lyric had no problem finding 6 threads about the headset to post in.

On top of that any one who blows $100 on a headset with out researching them deserves to lose money. With all the world at your finger tips your a fool if you don't check. Easy place to look is Amazon. They sell everything and have a good "review" section that is easy to read/figure out. Checking HERE (http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Beach-TBS-2214-Headset-Surround/product-reviews/B0056L959K/ref=cm_cr_pr_hist_1?ie=UTF8&filterBy=addOneStar&showViewpoints=0) lists why a bunch of people think this headset suck (please note they only posted one review each, not 6)

Spamming the boards doesn't help any more than posting once.
