Probably just should have used Google Earth! :O
Probably going to cost them a big bribe to someone. "Dollars please; no Euro's." :aok ;)

They should have done their research a bit better. Greece is well known for having no sense of humour when it comes to taking photos of military bases without permission. As happened to some British and Dutch plane spotters who were actually convicted of spying some years ago.
Many countries are hyper sensitive about taking photos of military installations, unsurprisingly. Even here in Ireland it's illegal to take photos of military barracks even if some of them have been in place for two hundred years. :noid Not that anyone has ever been arrested for that here.
If they're lucky they'll get away with a suspended sentence. But they could do time.

They better hope they don't get jail time in greece :noid

What could possibly happen in a Greek jail? :uhoh

Could it be worse than a Turkish prison?

I think the only difference is what they stab you in the butt with

Ask the innocent business guy who got convicted for 3 months. He sued the government for damages. His stay in the prison was quite literally a pain in the butt and he wasn't a happy camper. :bolt:

Not sure what the heck Greece is trying to hide? Their air force is well...pitiful, and it's an airbase that can be seen from Google maps...

Greece is 99% to the point of being at war with Turkey and it has stayed like that for the past decades. Greece may not have the latest hardware but they fly and practise a lot - and 'paint' turkish fighters daily.

ZOMG SPIEZ!

Apparently, it's not illegal to look at the base through Google maps. Which is stupid.

You can look at Area51 through Google maps, how stupid is that? :headscratch:

I remember zooming in a military installation somewhere on google maps, it was grayed out and told me restricted area. Don't remember the name.
If Greece wanted to prevent "espionage", then do that.

LOL kiddo. Google is an American company and they wouldn't listen to anything else except NSA directives. As Area51 shows, even the most top secret places can be viewed publicly as nothing whatsoever can be gained from the outlines of runways or buildings. You are, however, strictly restricted from approaching the area not to mention photographing activity there at close distance.
You need to think a little before you type :)
Quit high resolution imagery from Area51: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=37.771008,+-122.41175+(OMGz+teh+Area51)&iwloc=A&hl=us

Try stopping on the side of the road and taking pictures of Ft. Knox (just as one example)...

Therefore, it is a stupid law that makes no sense if you can just view the base on the Internet. A little early for the personal insult eh groggy old man?

Google maps does not provide realtime and groundlevel detailed shots of activities if you didn't notice. Handheld photography reveals daily schedules, units in action, plane markings, ordinance at takeoffs etc.

There are, in fact, blanked out spaces of Google Earth, and not all of them are in the United States.

And, contrary to popular belief, Area 51 is not in downtown San Francisco. Though you can see it on Google Earth.
