Title: how about mirrors in the cockpits?
Post by: noTch on September 15, 2012, 07:05:19 PM
I noticed that the windows and instruments are very shiny now. I've seen reflections of what is behind me, ie trees in the airspeed indicator of the Dr1, & the writing of the seat in the Fw190. What would be the odds that we could get rear view mirrors added to our favorite rides.

The Mustang, F6F, The Jug, Bf109's, & I am sure I saw a couple on some C205's maybe.  Anyway, kinda a cool little thing to consider :aok

the new environment mapping hits frame rates, try to imagine load with mirrors that you wouldn't be able to see what you think anyway.

Is it a matter of resolution in the mirror and having the con look as good as the rest of the environment to not get negative reviews from the paying customers? Or, is it the only PCs that wouldnt take a slide show stuttering FPS hit would be those that can play the game with everything maxed out to begin with?

If it's the first I would think players could be allowed to decide if they wanted to enable it and look at funky SWOTL style reflections. If it's the second, I understand the advantage a minority of players would be given unfairly. Is there a lower quality thats possible which won't favor a minority of PCs in that case?

How about no? It'd only be a cosmetic thing if it were put in, but IRL if you saw someone in the mirrors you were already a dead man.

How would it only be a cosmetic thing? Once again apparently speaking about something you  have no clue about
They were used in a lot of planes in WWII and could be added into game and used
but I think I read somewhere HTC shot it down because he doesn't want to give people with high end systems any advantage

In RL, wouldn't the vibrations of the engine/wind/etc... make them useless?  If you've ever tried looking into a mirror that is vibrating, you know it is hard to make out what's behind you.

Yes we need mirrors! How else can She Got Ya put her lipstick on while flying?

otherwise...

-5000 even though they're historically accurate otherwise nearly useless in game

just look back once in a while and use situation awareness - better than any mirror can ever give you

My dad used to turn the mirrors on his A4 so he could watch the slats and fly it on the edge of them coming out but deploying.

He said the same thing as above that they were useless for seeing the enemy.

Gunther Rall says they're worthless.

that's not all of them... mirrors would be a useless cosmetic frame rate killer.

we had them in air warrior, they were worthless.  I remember not flying some planes because the only way to look back was thru the mirror and you couldnt see anything.

So if mirrors are usless why can you google fighter cockpits and come back with modern jets with several big mirrors inside of the cockpit. If it's a cockpit with a REO even he has at least one mirror. You google for ww2 cockpits you see some have them some don't. Some inside the cockpit some out side. One ETO P51 squad disicovered if they mounted the outside mirror farther out from the canopy frame it greatly reduced the vibration and they mounted a top, left and right side mirror.

I found F4f, F6f and F4u with the mirror(s) mounted inside of the canopy frame usualy inside of the leading edge frame of the movable section. A few F4f and F6f with it mounted inside in the top of the windscreen. The F4u-1 with a a bulge in the panel just above the pilots head with a mirror in it. The F4u-xx with two, one on each side of the leading edge frame of the movable bubble. I got F4 Phantom hits serching for the F4f and some had interior mirrors.

The bulge is there on U.S. F4u-1. This is a good close up photo. Ever noticed in the game our F4u-1 is modeled in that regard incorrectly.

English fighter pictures show many with mirrors and many without from the ETO to the PTO and in between.

Found non-standard mirrors on P40's and none on\in P39. Some P38 do some don't. Bong used one. Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia didn't seem to use them in their fighters.

So thats alot of guys opting to use them from 1938-present.

Maybe we go with Hitech saying the codeing he could put together would give a minority of players with high end machines an advantage. Then my question: can it be given to all machines running the game but, with low quality graphics in the mirror. Or is it only some high end machines would be able to make use of it at this time.
