Title: I Got Me a New Toy! :D
Post by: skorpx1 on September 17, 2012, 03:35:41 PM
So last night my mom took me to Appleton (For those who live in Wisconsin, you should know where this is.) for some obscure reason. She wouldn't tell me why we were heading up there and I couldn't get a single hint. When we pulled into the pawn shop parking lot I thought she wanted me to help her pick out a gold ring or something.

Wow. I was wrong. She brought me in and said "Go pick out an amp."

:x :x :x :x :x :x :x So I went to the back where all the amps were sitting and found me a nice 150 watt Peavey bass amp for my room. It might have taken a year to get it but my gawd I am glad I finally got one.

Here's my a pic of my amp on my slightly messy floor. Cables and bass in the fore/background.

If any of y'all's have a good amp/bass/guitar/other type of instrument go ahead and post it here. I'd like to see whatchya all got.

For the most part, my room is "clean"  :noid but my mom didn't wanna spend the 100-ish dollars for it last year and for good reason. But I am extremely excited and if I can scrape up another $130 my mom said she will pay the rest for a good distortion pedal.

Good/best time of year to advertise (and start agressively persuing your neighbors) to clean out their roof gutters and string Christmas lights.

Ever since I got my bass, my neighbors don't like me. Maybe its because I can use an instrument correctly and they don't know the laws of bass playing.

But isn't it a bit early to string Christmas lights? Its only September, I don't think that Xmas lights should be put up until at least mid-November.

Never hurts to get the word out early.

I myself have a few guitars, amps, etc.  I've only been playing for about 2 1/2 years, play mostly for myself and sometimes at my buddy's bar.  I won't be home around my stuff until Friday, so I don't have any pictures, but here's a list of my stuff:

Jackson JS22 (black)
Takamine EG440CSTRY electric acoustic
'94 Mexican Tele

10 watt Marshall
Not sure what size Peavey I have, but it's big and loud

Digitech Death Metal Distortion Pedal
and Some kind of Digitech Effects Pedal with like 80 sounds...cheap and old, but fun to mess around with

If someone offered to pay you generously enough for it in February, would you refuse?  :D

It's part of growing up, being proactive and ambitious enough that all your neighbors know fully you're the one on the block making noise with a guitar is one thing, but realising they fully know your name and even have your cell number now (because you offered it to them) but they never call you to complain (like any normal, non-procrasinating adult would :rofl ) is another.

Just pitch it right - each full Saturday Mr. Wilson offers to keep you busy (and paid, while saving up for your new toy) is one less he has to listen to you playing your guitar next door.  Besides, I doubt _most_ your neighbors are too old to apreciate the music from a guitar (or perhaps, this is the reason _why_ they're ribbing at you for choosing the bass :devil ).

Not bad sir, not bad at all. I myself have a giant Peavey amp, 300 watts of neighborhood destroying power. I can crank it up to drown out a screaming little girl with an earth-shattering scream and its loud enough to possibly break all windows in the house, maybe the houses down the street too. I don't have a distortion pedal right now, but my friend has an echo pedal for when we get together in the garage with the rest of the band.

When we first got that echo pedal my vocalist (Mike) said the best thing ever - "I just FARTED!" with the echo pedal on. I know it sounds immature but the way it was said, and the echo pedal included we all burst out laughing, we didn't get serious until 20 minutes later when we realized that we wasted a lot of time doing stupid stuff.

Oh, if someone offered to pay for it in February I wouldn't decline at all, but I already got 40 of the 130 needed, and I am going pretty good at my current rate. I spent about 50 bucks on new CD's and a new string. My neighbors on the West side of the house are totally cool with me, know my name and I think they have my cell phone number. They work a lot though and have enough problems to deal with so I don't bother them much.

But for the part of my neighbors not being to old to appreciate music from my bass, that's kinda the problem. They're all in their late 70's to early 80's and crazy lady 2 houses down doesn't seem too keen on listening to my music.

But if they're ribbing at me for choosing the bass they are asking Satan for a one way ride to hell. The number of guitarists to bassists is ungodly huge. Its something like 16 to 1, the world NEEDS more bass players. If you've ever seen the amount of skill needed to play the bass correctly and effectively is mind-blowing. Any fool can learn how to play the guitar in a year or two, it'd take a genius to learn the bass in that time. (No offense Banshee)

HOWEVER, I did chose the 5 string bass, which is also a lot harder than a 4 string. 6 string bass? HORY CRAP! That'd take more than 4 years to master. Its got a massive fret board and the notes are almost doubled from a 4 string bass. It still makes a nice sound, though I wouldn't give up on my 5 string for a 4 string or a 6 string.

And if you wanna check out the skill that is obtained from playing the bass, check this video out - http://youtu.be/_yxDUhJrxL8 Nick Schendzielos is the best in the death metal bass industry, and it looks like he's gonna be there for a long time.

The Peavey was given to me, the guy didn't tell me a thing about it or if it even worked.  Got it home, cleaned it up, plugged it in, and it worked fine.  All I know is it has a 15inch Black Widow speaker and has to be at least 30 years old.

(No offense Banshee)

None taken.  I have attempted to play a couple of instruments and guitar has been the easiest by far!

My 300 watt Peavey is only 22 years old, and I thought that was old, but you just broke the record. 15 inches ain't to bad but... mines about 54 :lol I can stand next to it and it's only about a foot shorter than me.

Yeah, like I said I didn't really want it, because at the time I just played around at the house and stuff, but it was free so I took it.  It comes in handy whenever my buddy asks me to play some gigs with him.  Whenever I become a permanent part of the band I will buy a good size amp.  The bar is kinda small, so the Peavey works well.

I don't blame you for taking the amp, free is good! Unless its a "special" gift. DO NOT WANT. Also, if you ever do become a permanent part of the band i'd just stay with the smaller amp. The bar is small, and you wouldn't need a bigger one. If you're traveling around to go to band rehearsals and such, it's a lot easier to keep your own small amp with you and not have to keep your big one at a buddies house or lug it around everywhere. Sure you can leave a bigger amp at your friends house but what happens when there's a flood or fire? Buh bye amp.

If I were you i'd wait until you went full-on bigtime (if that's the plan) to get that huge amp, and when I say huge amp I mean one of these bad boys.

My amp is about the same size as one of those Marshall's but only about 2.75 feet wide. I also looked up a few 10-50 watt amp's and they sound pretty darn good. If I had to get one, i'd definitely consider it.

Went to guitar center to buy new strings today.  Started playing this Fender Hot Rod Deville Finnish Isle amp with a Cannabis rex speaker.  Holy Tone Batman, this amp was awesome.  40 watts 6L6's, great clean tone and a amazing dirty tone, almost on par with my Marshall Vintage Modern.  Well, i walked out after putting it on layaway.  Can't wait to be playing this amp in a couple more weeks.

<edit>  The most unreal thing is that i almost always hate fender amps.  That Glassy sound drives me up a wall, give me the chime of a Vox 24/7.  Best amp fender has ever made.

Gear list with out this
Epiphone LP Custom
Fender MIM Strat
Ibanez Artcore AF75

Marshall Vintage Modern
Vox AC15
Marshall MG100 1/2 stack

Boss TU3, SD1, DS1, DD6
Vox V847 Wah
Mxr Phase90
Seymour Duncan Tweaker Fuzz
Memory Boy
Digitech Bad Monkey

yea, i kinda have GAS.  Gear Aquisition Symptom

Nice. Got a pic of that Fender? If it sounds good and plays good, my guess is that it's gonna look good too! But your GAS is nothing compared to my friend who plays the guitar. He's probably got all the stuff you have plus another page or two.

EDIT: I got a few pics of all my gear, first up is my beloved 5 string Samick Artist Series Bass.

Next my newer amp

My big 300 watt amp + manuscript book/folder and metronome on top with a random blue Dunlop pick just chilling there. I have my bass next to it standing up so you can get a feel for how big it actually is. The riding lawn mower in the background is about 2/3rd's the size of the amp.

I have a Fender American Special Telecaster:

Exactly like the one pictured here:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-American-Special-Telecaster-Electric-Guitar-105766943-i1502370.gc

Sadly, that's my only toy besides a cheap-o Dean and a cheap-o Telluride that collect dust in my room now.

As for gear, a have a 30 Watt Tranzamp. Hopefully, I'll be able to afford a larger and better amp that I can play with around next summer whenever I'm working full time again.

Very nice, I always liked the looks of the Fender guitars and the design on the colors on the body. When I get my job in the spring/summer of next year I plan on getting a killer Warwick steamer stage 2, 5 string bass and possibly another Peavey 300 watt amp. My favorite bassist currently owns a special made Streamer stage 2 - 5 string bass kind of like this. http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Store-Used-USED-WARWICK-STREAMER-STAGE-II-5-STRING-AFZELIA-BODY-WC-107125019-i2284500.gc

But if I could get any bass I wanted custom made, it'd be made out of Swamp Ash wood (Great tone wood) with Snake Tree wood for the neck and a Swamp Ash head stock to match the body. The best I could hope for right now is probably a decent used Samick Greg Bennett Fairlane FN15, 5 or 4 string. If I decide for a new one, it'd probably run me in the neighborhood of 300-350 dollars but lightly used and a few years older would be a good 60-70 dollars cheaper. I wouldn't mind a killer Gibson Les Paul though. Those are some of the best out there.

My favorite amp by far is my 1974 Sunn Model-T..  I bought it it the late 90's from a thrift-store for $50.00.  Took it to my amp guy, had a work-over done on it for $300.00. Replaced tubes, pots, cleaned, etc.  Thing was in great shape for a sitting in a garage in a box for the last few years..
Amp is worth around $2500 now..  I will never sell it..  It is the loudest amp I own and pretty much blows away anything else I've put it up against..  That thing turned up to 12 o'clock needs no silly over-drive/distortion pedal/effect whatsoever..  Wish I could find a matching Sunn 4x12 original cab for it..  Been looking for years..  For now, my Emperor cab does the job..  I've been a Celestion Vintage 30 fanboy for a while, but got 4 of the Jensen 12" Electric Lightnings for a steal on Craigslist.....  I'll tell you what, those things seer the skin off my face and make me pee myself a little bit when played at club volume levels..  Playing the main riff from Sabbath's "Into the Void" is like narcotic for me on that amp..

Wow. That's an oldie, I am more stunned by the fact that you got it for $50 and its now worth 50 times the original buying price. I never really heard any noise from a Sunn IRL but I have been told that they are fairly good. The matching cab for it will be one hell of a find if you do manage to get one of those, rare piece these days. I doubt it'll be cheap either, if the Amp costs 2500 I wouldn't hesitate to put that cab in the area of $1500 to $3000 depending on condition.
