Read the news, too. Microsoft offers a tool that should help, but the instructions and procedures are too difficult to follow for an average Joe, says e.g. Mr. Hypponen from F-secure (ranked in the top 50 of IT security specialists in the world). Installed the EMET on a customer's laptop with IE only, looked at the instructions and uninstalled, installed Firefox as default instead.

For those who want more information of the subject: A short ZDNet article with comments (http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-points-to-security-tool-to-plug-ie-vulnerability-7000004400/) and Microsoft's article about EMET (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2458544/en-us)

 :rofl

A browser is one of the most important part of a system and they can't stop it being fetled :)

My PC switched itself on three times in the night and my wireless keyboard went mad, I wonder if I was being probed? :)

There was also some unidentified devices in my device manager :rofl

Not totally: Even if you're using another browser than IE you should keep IE fully patched. Why, if you're not going to use it? Because IE affects to Windows' networking components. IE is behind Messenger and other Live thingies, and I guess it also works with Windows Update. It can't be fully uninstalled.

So, if you're not going to use it, put the security settings on High. Tips for safer browser settings are i.e. on this Cert site (http://www.cert.org/tech_tips/securing_browser/). For a browser that is not in use the rules can be set even tighter.

If your PC is switching itself on at night shouldn't you turn off "Wake on LAN" in your BIOS?

Because you have it installed, unless you've done some serious Registry tweaking to make uninstalling possible. Just look into your Program Files (x86) folder and you'll find the IE folder with a fully working exe. Uninstalling IE only takes the default status and icons away.

I already answered that: Go to C:\Program files (x86)\Internet Explorer\ where you will find Internet Explorer, or rather "iexplore.exe" which will launch IE.
OR without even opening IE: Go to Control Panel, find Internet Options and voilą! It's the very same thing in there.

To your other question: Some virus or other malware might affect your system even if you don't use IE. You see, some malware might sneak into your machine through, say, Firefox and then the malicious program could use IE without showing a visible IE window. I just recently cleaned a machine which among other things had two instances of iexplore.exe running in the background. So even if you don't use IE, something else might. That's why securing IE is important.
