Title: Forum Issues
Post by: Nefarious on September 18, 2012, 06:16:45 PM
Having serious trouble accessing BBS. It's not timing out. I have been experiencing somewhat slower internet, but nothing takes more time than the AH BBS.

Both of my PCs, my IPAD, my Android phone are suffering from this issue. If I can log on, forum navigation is ok and not lagging. It's just the physical act of opening the forum from a bookmark or typing or clicking a link.

I can go to hitechreations.com fine, navigate to the forum link... not happening. It took me over 5 minutes to log on.

Help!

I have no idea what to tell you.  I just logged in, like I do every morning, from home, and it seems to be responding just fine.

I have noticed long waiting times for quite some time now, especially when moving from one thread to another with the "next" hyperlink. Often there's also a noticeable lag when posting a reply. Logging in per se doesn't take too long, moving to a certain subject does. I just went to see if there's something on our squad section. I was instantly able to see that there was a new topic on the list, but it took about half a minute to get into it. The same happened when I came back here to edit this one. Now that I had added that, a quick test allowed me instantly jump anywhere without problems...

it's been a bit sporadic. wonder if maybe people are doing searches and that could be hanging things a bit.

If several searches, with no specified date range happen, it can cause the forums to just lock up for around 5 to 10 minutes.

In those instances what happens is SMF times out, but does not kill the SQL thread and then the user starts the search again.  Rinse and repeat.  Once there are about 5 or 6 of those things running, the user can no longer start any more searches.

Then they come to the board complaining about the search function, once they can get back to the board.  Truth is, if everyone used a reasonable date range, or we simply shuttled off the first eight or nine years of posts, it would solve the problem.

Maybe add in red text, "please specify a target date range for your search" on the search page so more people would and so less problems

Those are difficult to do and still be able to update SMF as security patches come out.

I meant to just add it to the web pages table as "text", say after the Message age: in this line

<div class="small_header" style="margin-bottom: 2px;">Message age: </div>

Yes, and the next potential patch to SMF will wipe out the change or cause the patch to fail.

There is one other thing that can cause the lag.  If you are clicking on a thread/topic which contains a number of images hosted on a remote site and the remote site is responding slowly, this can cause the lag as browsers tend to preload images and wait until they are done before rendering the information.
