So it's been a very emotional time for me of late. I rather unexpectedly found an outlet in an activity I haven't done for many many years - art. Inspired by Rothko and Turner, Everett and Hill, I took up Mrs. Shida's acrylic paints and one of her unwanted canvases and tried to make a piece depicting the conflict between the torment and elation of being a parent. It turned out way better than I expected but I'm a bit embarassed to show the piece, so personal is it.
I can't bring myself to show my friends. I was thinking I could show a quick photograph of it here and get some input. I know there are a lot of resident artists and there is an element of anonymity here after all.
What do you think?
-
We'd be happy to see it Shida, if you don't feel like posting it here you can always PM it to a few friends, asking opinions, I'd like to see
:salute
-
Please, my friend, it would be an honor to see it!
-
post it, no point dipping your toe in the water when you could dive in and get the whole experience
-
post it as long as it's not too emotional :cry
my heartstrings are a lot more vulnerable to being tugged these days!

Post it. Even if people won't like it it's always better to share your art instead of keeping it hidden.
-
Its rubbish, it does not look anything like a lady in the nuddie :old:
Rothko was the one who did not speak in the Marx Brothers?
-
See, people like zack1234 here make me nervous.
Not wishing to sound immodest, but I think it's a profound piece of work. I was thinking of donating the piece to the hospital, or perhaps I could auction it to a collector and donate the money to the hospital and here's Zack taking the piss already.
I don't mind artistic criticism but I'm not going to show it if jokers like Zack1234 aren't going to take the work seriously.
-
Zack is the reason Picasso hacked his ear off. That guy is bad news :uhoh
-
Exactly. I went to art college you know, a long time ago but it still counts.
-
Chanting....POST POST POST!!!!!! :rock
-
Post it. Ignore the idiots.... You know who they are. Take the criticism of those you respect..... You know those too.
-
As an artist myself I would love to see it. I've got all over the walls of buildings in my old hometown in Ky so I'm not afriad to show my artwork. I love constructive critisizm from all, it just makes you a better artist. Your always gonna have the idiots, they are always around no matter what. So don't be afraid to post the ones that count will always respect you!!! :salute
-
Post it shida! Be proud of what you have made :)
-
I'm waiting to see it myself.
-
Shida Show it, my best artistry is drawing stick figures who are not even straight! :)
-
Shida all that matters is : are YOU happy with it?

I'd like to see it. Post it please.
-
Dont leave us "hanging" so to speak.. Come On Shida...
-
BTW, Uptown, it was Van Gogh who cut off his ear.......
-
I wanna see too. If its good, and most things that are from the heart are good, then you should have some prints done before donating it.
-
Shida Show it, my best artistry is drawing stick figures who are not even straight! :)
Nothing is ever straight with you.
:D sorry, too good to pass up.
-
Alright, with all this encouragement I'll show it. But you're sure no one will take the piss or someone like akak will show up and get all macho? It's a very serious piece. I call it Elation and Torment, Mother and Child.
I can tell you that when Mrs. Shida she saw it she ran into another room with her hand over her face sobbing I think, so you'd better brace yourselves.

See here we go, daft pictures. Not every thread has to be a joke you know. I knew this would degrade quickly.

Just because a few people were immature doesn't mean we all are. I'm all for seeing those pictures you painted, so if you don't wanna post them here I will ask one question - Could you show me them in a PM?
-
Post it mr shida! Be proud of what you make! I mean we make fun of zack and he can't even paint :neener: :bolt:
-

Had nothing to do with you nor your picture Shida ol' chap. Just having some fun with Butcher. I'm sure if you had posted it inside the last 13 1/2 hours after annoucing it I would have simply complimented you on how good it was.

I apologise again :old:

Zack is an honest man! :old:

I'm sorry Jimbo, I over-reacted but no more messing around anyone, ART is a serious business, I've poured my heart and soul into this piece and I'm feeling nervous about it as it is. This could be a new career for me and my artistic mojo needs nurturing not made fun of by the likes of zack1234.

OK Shida we would like to see it and we'
ll be gentle now post it or decide our opinions dont relaly matter because youre proud of it anyway(which is the way it should be )
-
Post it already.
I must now see it. This teasing is killin' me mate, now post it.
Besides you do art for yourself, for no one else. Critics are not artists they are critics.
Post it.
My mother, God bless her, was convinced I was going to be an architect and had me in art classes quite young.
She still has stuff I did as a kid hung on the walls of her home that I can finally appreciate for what it is. It's me expressed through the art.
Post it.
-
nrshida, I speak as an artist myself and I totally understand the nervous feelings of showing a piece. I have come to realize that those who don't SEE it as art, have small and shallow minds and if a piece goes unseen then countless people who might be touched and or inspired by your piece of art will miss out on account of the few. You will also benefit enormously when others do SEE it as you intended. Please share.

Yes you're right if people can't see the beauty and seriousness in a piece of art then it shouldn't spoil it for anyone else. Thanks for all of your support. I just don't want a profound piece like this taken lightly.
So, 'Elation and Torment, Mother and Child' - by nrshida...
-
I'll look at it and tell you what I think. If I think it's good I'll say so. If I think it's piss I'll say so. Honesty is all you get, but isn't that what you want? :)

Really? That's great, did you find it moving? Do you think I have a future in Art?
Wow, I'm so glad I trusted my talent and posted now. All those nerves over nothing...

It brought a tear to my eye, simply amazing old friend! :old:

Fantastic! This is an endorsement of going to art college all those years ago and expressing oneself in times of torment.
Do you think I could get a lot for it?
-
It brought a tear to my eye, simply amazing old friend! :old:
Splendid to hear. I really made it to move people to thought. Do you think I captured the juxtaposition between the tragic torment of love and loss?
The canvas is actually quite big, should I contact a gallery do you think?

Yes, it's difficult to enter into this work because of how the aura of the negative space endangers the devious simplicity of the distinctive formal juxtapositions. I agree/disagree with some of the things that have just been said, but the metaphorical resonance of the Egyptian motifs notates the inherent overspecificity.
With regard to the issue of content, the disjunctive perturbation of the spatial relationships brings within the realm of discourse a participation in the critical dialogue of the 90s.
As an advocate of the Big Mac Aesthetic, I feel that the sublime beauty of the facture contextualize the essentially transitional quality.

See, NEVER underestimate the Aces High community - there for you in times of trouble, feisty debate over world politics, cutting humour and good fellowship and now art appreciation too.
It warms my heart GScholz, that you grasp the delicate compositional landscape, underlined by the use of muted colours as a commentary on the economic system, and the human element as communicated in the risk / reward careful postural structuring of mother and child.

Absolutely amazing. I have one that closely resembles that on the wall next to my computer. My 21 year old daughter did it for me some 18 years back.
To this day I still cherish the work.

Yes quite so Zoney. I thought that Scholz fellow understood, but frankly his integrity as an artist was blown the moment he threatened the resale value.

Hey, I'm not the artist here, you are! I'm the art critic!

I will produce a art work tomorrow :old:

I've already had a few offers via PM. I will talk to my agent and get back to you respectively :salute

I love it Redbull, the variance of the line-weight communicates a tortured passion for art and an especially firm grip of the crayon, the disparate composition of the limbs projects, nay reflects, the incongruous effort of a diffuse personality as it strives for affection and recognition and the proportion of the face to limb decidedly expresses the importance of facial expression at the root of human interaction. Your efforts quite put my own artistic efforts to shame sir :salute

:rofl The painting is actually an extract of a larger piece made by 'Group 1 & 2' a set of schoolchildren here in Amsterdam about 10 years ago. I found it hanging on the wall of the Ronald MacDonald house where we live so we can be near Tiny shida. I was inspired to play this jape by a deep and recent understanding of the importance of humour, and have learned first hand how laughter truly can be the best medicine.
Our forum has been a bit serious lately so I thought we could all use a laugh.
There were a few clues that this was going to be a joke I thought someone might have caught, Rothko and Turner, Everett and Hill, as in Kenny Everett and Benny Hill, :lol That's one to me Zack :neener:
-
Titan rofl thanks :aok :rofl

Is that a bit of Van Gogh's "Starry Night" I see in there?

I should apologise to jimbo71 who removed his humourous image out of respect for my 'seriousness' :salute

Humor is very important in times of stress and worries. If I may ask; how is Tiny Shida doing? Is there a special pediatric hospital in Amsterdam?
-
Yes I was very impressed by the quality of your artistic criticism. Thanks for playing along GScholz :salute
Tiny Shida is in rude health, also prompting my jocularity. Yes Amsterdam is one of only four Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the Netherlands. Fine department and outstanding people. Early next week we expect to move back home and T.S. to our local hospital's High Care Unit.
Little fella is night and day different, they seem to transcend the pre-baby phase at a given moment and start to seek contact and engagement. Wonderful. Been a very rocky road for us and it will be mixed feelings when we leave, we will miss the staff, on the other hand it can be a very dark place in the NICU, another tiny one died this week.
