Title: nrshida - Sculptor
Post by: nrshida on September 21, 2012, 10:13:11 AM
Encouraged as I am with the recent critical acclaim in my 'nrshida - Artist' thread. I was considering sharing some images of a sculpture I was working on just before the arrival of Tiny Shida. I plan to continue working on it when I get home, but I thought I'd get some critical input and show you another dimension of my vast artistic repertoire, I don't want to get typecast as merely a painter. Tut.

You all wouldn't take the piss though would you, I mean if it's not as good as my painting?

I think this may be one of yours. I found it under a bridge.

That's an awesome piece. Mine's on a smaller scale though, do you think that means it is a less significant piece of art?

I'm getting nervous now, perhaps I should have thought bigger.

What medium did you choose? Clay,to me, is indicative of society's ability to change, which if not indulged results in us all becoming entrenched in the popular ideals which then harden into stubborn immobility. I like bronze myself, the little square holes left by the forging process are cool and bronzes normally are nudes, and the fella's always have tiny winkies which makes me feel better. And we all know that old adage about gentlemen prefer bronze :old:

I used the dried faeces of the ring ouzel. It's not as malleable as bronze and the melting point is way higher, but the finish is more pleasing to both eye and nose.

Marble is the only thing that real artists ever sculpt with.  Poo is a great start though and certainly easier and less expensive.

When the greatest artist that ever lived was asked "How can you possibly take a block of marble and sculpt an Elephant from it ?"  He replied, "It's simple, you just take off all the pieces that do not look like an elephant".

So now the question is, whom is the artist?

I cheated and googled but it was not an Elephant.

The Ring Ouzel has a notoriously tiny poo chute, and they are fleeting in nature. For this reason Ring Ouzel faeces is four times the price of gold. If you buy it that is, serious artists gather their own of course.

Are you gonna cover the cork with leather? Once you are done?

No I chose the cork for its tactile quality. It's actually quite a nice material to work with also, sands well. The grip is built up from drinks coasters.

Can't decide whether to paint the plastic parts black when finished or leave them raw dark green. Might rework the trigger as well. It's two-stage using microswitches but might swap plain ones for roller ones if I can find them that small because it feels a bit 'scrapey'.

Yes fantastic facility for parents on a sticky wicket. I'll make a thread about it and describe our experience. Where do you work / what do you do Josh?

Right now I'm in my third year as a full time student at a private university in Tennessee, but part time i work at a seed company.  My high school always did fundraisers for St. Jude and the Ronald McDonald House.  Continued that after school by collecting can tabs off of aluminum cans to send down there.  It's been a couple of years in the making but we have almost filled a five gallon bucket full of them.
