sometimes I hate being mechanically inclined lol, my project for tomorrow is a clutch in a 2000 mustang with the v6 not sure what size. I have searched the internet trying to find torque specs, I found 21-24 ft/lbs for the pressure plate was wondering if this was legit hoping someone here might know. The car has 154000 miles and the throwout bearing is squealing bad, I figure might as well replace clutch and pressure plate while everything is apart. I have never worked on a car, many trucks though how much of a PITA is this going to be? :headscratch:
-
Don't forget the pilot bushing/bearing.
If you hear a squeeling when the clutch is in, you have a 50% chance it is the pilot bushing.
-
when you torque them, be sure to do it in a star pattern, and at least 3 times around.....by that, i mean do not just tighten the first one all the way down, then go to the next one tighten all the way, etc.
also be sure to check the flywheel for heat cracks, and hot spots. you may want to consider replacing the flywheel too.
Torque Specifications
Description Nm lb-ft
Pressure plate to flywheel bolt (3.8L) 47 35
Pressure plate to flywheel bolts 4.6L (2V) 45+60° 33+60°
Pressure plate to flywheel bolts 4.6L (4V) 45+60° 33+60°
-
with that many miles on the car you may want to consider resurfacing the flywheel while you have everything else out
-
if $$$$ werent an issue he said he would replace the flywheel also, but he just cant afford to. thanks for the intel now if he shows up lol said he was going to be here no later than 9 and here it is 9:16 lol
-
CAPS GOT THE TORQUE SPECS SPOT ON ON MORE THING YOU SHOULD REPLACE THE PRESSURE PLATE BOLTS THEY HAVE A HABBIT OF STREACHING OUT OR LOOSENING UP AFTER A REPAIR, NEW PILOT BEARING AND THROW OUT BEARING IS A MUST, FLYWHEEL CANNOT BE RESURFACED IF WORN TOO BAD A NEW ONE MUST BE USED. SORRY FOR CAPS AT WORK AND CAP LOCK BROKEN.

I THINK he may be lucky... the pilot bearing is in the flywheel.......and i agree with recommending replacing it.

well so far 1 broken starter stud, one screwed exhaust nut, royal PITFA :bhead

got it all apart they guy decided not to replace the clutch and pressure plate, he said that that would leave him with 20 for the next week, I tried to advise against but not my car or money lol. the throwout bearing was toasted. the bolts holding the rear of the driveshaft on, we ended up putting a wrench on it and jacking up on the wrench to break them loose, impact wouldnt and neither would a breaker bar. he gave up on it as soon as we got the tranny out, still need to get bell housing off to get broken starter stud out. every friggin bolt was corroded and the bellhousing is corroded to the block, gonna finish it up tomorrow. here are some pics
(http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx199/homersipes/010_zpsa8e8cb4c.jpg) couple balls that used to be in the throwout bearing
(http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx199/homersipes/009_zpse25267cf.jpg)whats left of the throwout bearing

(http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx199/homersipes/007_zps1148605f.jpg) what we found in the inspection cover
-
look at the fingers on that clutch. DO NOT let him cheese out. you and him will both regret it. also inspect the collar where the throw out bearing rides. judging by the condition, you're probably gonna find some wear/damage on that too.
the bellhousing on fords sets on 2 dowel pins. one is at 3 oclock, the other at 9, as viewed from the rear. use a plastic mallet and try tapping the bottom of the bell. sometimes you can get a prybar in there too. those dowels are ALWAYS tight on these fords.
if you were talking about the rear driveshaft bolts, i generally use a 12mm 12 point 3/8" drive socket on a wobble extension, with a 1/2" adapter and a 1/2" impact gun. haven't had one that that combo didn't work on yet.
seriously.......he's better off having only $20 to last him a week, than he is/will be paying you to do the job a second time. on top of that, he'll try to tell you that you shouldn't have let him do it this way, and try to beat ya up ont he price.
i'm not trying to be a wise arse.......i've been there doing what you're doing, and just trying to help ya out. :aok

i haven't done one that new yet......
do you know which tranny you have? there's three possibilities. the good news, is that in 08 you still had the shifter directly mounted in the tranny, unlike the getrag in the 011 and newer gt's. the bad news, is that you've now got a hydraulic clutch release to deal with, and as much as i like my fords, ford has ALWAYS found a way to make that difficult to deal with.

so the dipstick had bought a clutch kit yesterday, returned it today, spent the money and wants to just put the throwout bearing in :bhead

wow......honestly, i wouldn't give him the choice..........he's gonna regret it. on the other hand, at least everything'll come apart easier in a couple weeks when the clutch fails.

Wow, I can't see doing all that work and not replacing everything. :headscratch:

I can...... :rofl :rofl :rofl First homer most likely did all the work and the owner watched and "advised"... Did I get that right homer?
If it was me and in about 2 or 3 weeks when the clutch goes I'd tell him "been there done that sorry about your luck". Since you have a good idea about the time involved then quote him the cost of the job at a reasonable labour rate, say 20 bucks per hour!
When I contracted I used to do a few renos and I would always tell the home owner I'd have to charge double if they helped, after all they're learning a trade..... :devil

actually he is one of the few that I have helped out that actually got their hands into it. :rofl he was scared though about breaking stuff, he wanted to pull the u joints apart to get the driveshaft out instead of taking the bolts off of the shaft at the rearend, was worried about them breaking. Like I told him it might last another 6 months but on the other hand it might last the next 6 times pushing the clutch in. what I find funny is is that he had already bought the whole clutch kit :headscratch: I think he will learn the hard way about it :D

i don't know which tranny it is. But it's a 5 speed man. If that helps.
