Title: ACM: F4u-1a vs. F4u-1d
Post by: Slade on September 22, 2012, 07:53:43 PM
Hello,

I know the F4u-1d can take more ord than the F4u-1a.  In the context of ACM, what differentiates these two planes?

Also, have you found anything interesting between them reguarding flight characteristics?

Thanks for sharing,

Slade  :salute

I hate all F4u's.

That is all.

1A is quiet a bit faster than the 1D atleast on the deck other than that nothing really different except for the wingtanks

1D is a bit heavier IIRC, so wing loading is higher.

But manuverability seems to be comparable between the two.

The bomb pylon is the difference, 1A is about 8-10MPH faster than the 1D. So when you take an egg or a droptank in the 1A you'll be slightly slower than a clean 1A, even after you drop whatever you're carrying.

I don't know what it is, but I seem to do better in the 1D. Maybe the slightly less speed puts it in my "ball park" for where I fight. Just seems to get around better for me.

I believe the 1D has less weight because of the fact that there is less gas tank so, it seems to accelerate better at low speed than the 1A at times only because the 1A may be carrying more fuel.

In the end I like the slightly better top speed of the 1A and the fact that it has the wing tanks; I almost never get shot down from a fuel leak.
The 1D does have 50 more rounds of .50 cal. though.....

Did some tests on the F4u's and thought I would pass it on.  Using 1/4 fuel at 200 feet:

PlaneSpeed (mph)
F4u-1358
F4u-1a365
F4u-1c357
F4u-1d357
F4u-4375

The 1a can maintain 377mph at 10 feet, with one horizontal stabilizer missing. Tested   ;)

I love 109s and the difference between the F4u-1a vs. F4u-1d as far as "feel" is similar to the 109g2 and the 109g6.  The later models (109g6 and F4u-1d) feel just a bit more stable.

Slade, you don't know what you're talking about. The E-4 is clearly the most stable 109  :P.

1. Context is everything.  I was comparing the difference (actually the "feel") between the g2 and g6.

2. I don't claim to know anything.  I just shared some findings.

Grateful for all feedback.  Thanks.  :salute
