Title: Anyone using old components?
Post by: Rob52240 on September 24, 2012, 01:40:04 PM
I was just adding another monitor when I realized I've been using the enormous sound card in my machine is over 10 years old now.  I thought it might be a bit obnoxious when I bought it for my first gaming rig back in 2001.

I reuse old components when I upgrade.  as I can afford I'll replace the old with new then reassemble the original computer and sell it.  my junk can be a good buy for somebody else :).

I get the most I can from my components. I will reuse them repeatedly until they are a burden on the system. It's all about balancing performance needs with funds. I used a sound card for a long time. Got it probably in 2001. Last couple years I've been using onboard audio because my CPU is fast enough not to feel any hit doing so. Most CPUs are these days. Sound quality is decent as well. So for my current build I boxed the PCI sound card because it didn't make sense anymore. I also had an old PCI firewire card that I no longer use because I have integrated ports on my mobo.

I just upgraded my old soundblaster card as it was not supported, nor would it work with Win7. I've had that card as long as I have been flying, and that goes back to the AW days.

I checked Newegg and I'm still using the same Mitsumi computer keyboard that I bought in March of 2003.  Its pretty disgusting now, because I rarely clean it, but its a tank.  But for the most part everything else has been replaced multiple times.  I still have some really old hardware (P3-450) from long long ago set up and ready to run a Smoothwall if my firewall/router ever goes south, but I don't use it normally because it eats more electricity.
