As the title says I have a question for you all. Its not a yes or no question, there is no right or wrong answer and it can be whatever you believe it to be.
My question is this - What is the meaning of life to you?
To me the meaning of life is to bind yourself to 50-60 years of lightly paid labor, have yourself controlled by a person in a suit + tie over in D.C. while they live the good life, have to shell out your hard earned money for useless stuff you'll never use but in the beginning you thought you would, endlessly worry about what you'll do in the future and lastly, how to leave this god forsaken planet and find a new one that isn't horrible screwed up to the point of everyone turning on each other in an all-out war against each country with nuclear/chemical weapons.

Buy toys, break them.
Rinse and repeat.

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
(Actually, I just wanted to post that before anyone else did. The real meaning of life, the universe and everything is 42)

Seeing my wife in the moonlight down by the lake, the softness of her skin, and scent of her perfume
my son catching his 1st 5 lb bass
the smell of saltwater and pine trees, fresh cut hay and my grandmas sourdough bread.
my wife and I watching our children's first Christmas as they look at the tree in awe...then they play with the wrapping paper instead of the toys lol
watching my oldest son tear up with joy as I give him the keys to his own truck.
The smell of the lilacs blowing through the bedroom windows in the spring, as birds sing waking me up.
the sound of whipper wills on summer nights sitting around a campfire
the early morning fog hanging over the pond, water smooth as glass except for the wake of my jitter bug.
the taste of a cold beer after a hard days work, or a big mason jar of sweet tea as I sit under the big maple tree in the back yard.
my dog Ike and how he's so happy to see me when I get home
the smell of coffee brewing in the morning, country ham frying in the skillet
spring turkey hunts with the boys
my old buddy joe's blackberry wine
Hank Williams music and good kentucky bourbon
before you can understand the meaning of life....you must live it first. :old:

To me, you got 95% of that good to me, we all get born, we all live, we all die, there is no fabricated lie of a perfect afterlife or a horrid pit of flames, and there is no self-proclaimed ruler and creator of everything. But in the end, there is a meaning. There has to be, its not like we just popped up for no reason.
-
There has to be
Why?
-
it's up to you to give your life meaning and purpose. and yes virginia...there is a God
-
Why?
Do you really think we popped up in this universe for no absolute reason at all? In reality we're all flecks of dust on a small bouncy ball in the middle of a giant vacuum that we call space, with no knowledge of what's beyond our galaxy of what other living thing is out there. What I believe is that we're all just some strange experiment gone horribly wrong. All the other animals/living creatures that are still alive have made it and not much is wrong with them, but humanity is walking the path to extinction and slowly rotting away. If some other superior species finds our remnants or maybe a few survivors, then good for them. They will know that they weren't the only ones out there/are the only ones out there.
it's up to you to give your life meaning and purpose. and yes virginia...there is a God
If you wish to believe there's a god, go right ahead. I'm not going to discuss it further because I don't wanna get whacked with a rule #14.
-
There has to be, its not like we just popped up for no reason.
Why? weeds pop up for no reason, mosquitos pop up from puddles for no reason, what makes humans so special? People just want to believe there is a reason. Just like they want to believe there is a greater being (god). sorry to disappoint you.
-
What I believe is that we're all just some strange experiment gone horribly wrong. All the other animals/living creatures that are still alive have made it and not much is wrong with them, but humanity is walking the path to extinction and slowly rotting away.
The overwhelming majority of all species that ever existed on earth went extinct. If humanity would join them, it would be the rule, not the exception from it.

The meaning of life is to be happy, generally through being productive, although other things could make you happy as well. Long them happiness especially. Short term happy sacrificing long term happy results in unhappiness... :)
So focus on long term happiness. :old:

The overwhelming majority of all species that ever existed on earth went extinct. If humanity would join them, it would be the rule, not the exception from it.
I know that a lot of species that existed on the planet went extinct, but that was besides the point. They died out because they couldn't survive (hence evolution) due to some natural force being smarter and stronger than them. Dinosaurs went extinct (supposedly) from an asteroid hit to the earth. When the dust settled some living things came out on top and thus a chain of events was born leading to humanity. Humanity itself has scientific evidence of evolution happening. Humanity right now though is killing itself, (i'm not a hippie) we dump toxic waste into the only useful planet we have, we destroy our own ozone layer protecting us from the suns intense power, we constantly drain the earth of its natural resources (coal and oil as an example) and we constantly kill each other in brutal slaughter during wars. Its only a matter of time until the reclamation song plays and we all die.
Why? weeds pop up for no reason, mosquitos pop up from puddles for no reason, what makes humans so special? People just want to believe there is a reason. Just like they want to believe there is a greater being (god). sorry to disappoint you.
There's a reason for everything - to me at least. Weeds, mosquitoes and other living stuff all came from (supposedly) the same thing - a random meteor hitting the earth carrying vital things for life. The reason for rain is because the sun evaporates water into the sky and then it condenses and falls down. I don't think that we popped up because a mass explosion a few gazillion years ago happened, I think something else created us. Heck, maybe we're all a figment of someone's imagination.
-
We will agree to disagree. I like your thread though :aok I just don't think it will last long unfortunately.
-

If so, we did come from the same random meteor, hence we are random like the weeds and mosquitoes.
We are part of the life on this planet. We are only special in some aspects, but that could be said of about every species. Of course everybody wants to be special and nobody wants to be 'random' and without purpose... not even me ;)
If there had been proto-intelligent dinosaurs with self-conciousness, I'd bet they would have the same thoughts "Why are we here? There must be a purpose!"

If we all die doing something that made us happy, and hardly anyone remembers what we did (unless we do something ungodly great to impact the life of future generations) then what should we really be doing? I do what makes me happy and that's playing the bass. Will I get any recognition for it? Probably not. The chance of having your band make it big-time is about the same as winning the grand prize in a lottery.

Why do you think this wont last long? We haven't broken any rules and insults aren't being thrown yet :lol

For all we know, other animals could be self-conscious and we just don't know it because we don't speak their "language." Take dogs for an example, they know when we're happy and when we're sad. They listen to us (because they've been trained) when we say "sit" or "stay" and they know when to get in and out of the way. Do they get along with other dogs? Some yes, some no - Just like humans get along with some and don't get along with others. Do dogs speak? Meh, possibly. I bet if they had thumbs and could stand upright they'd be just like humans. Kind of like apes and chimps do, and how they are closely related to humans.

shall we resort to process of elimination by listing things we can agree are not the meaning of life?
throwing a cupcake at random child.
farting in somebodys face while they slumber.
stealing clothes from donation boxes.
doing business with tomato goblins.
hope this helps.

Those are the only two that are not the meaning of life. Throwing cupcakes at random children, farting in faces and being a general troll is funny and is always acceptable (to me) unless it is life-threatening.

May I ask why you are not the person in the suit?
-
May I ask why you are not the person in the suit?
Because i'm only 15. If I were in charge, believe me we'd all be living the good life. Not some money-glutton king who decides we all have to suffer for his own good.
If you wanna discuss this further, PM me. Once again I don't feel like getting rule 14'd.

So you imply doing something worthy of others remembering and getting recognition makes you happy. If so, pursue it and be happy for the opportunity to pursue it. If the pursuit does not make you happy then pursue something that makes you happier. Pursuing a goal that is highly unlikely of being achieved when the pursuit does not make you happy is not worth the effort. Put the effort into something better to achieve happiness.
I'm sure you realize being recognized and remembered is not everyone's path to happiness, although it certainly is for some.
Some are happy to simply raise their kids, others to be a corp CEO, others to live in a forest, others to worship, others to travel, etc...
Become sincerely happy and stay that way over the long run and you'll know the meaning of your life. It will be self evident. If you pursue things that result in unhappiness or less than the fullest potential to be happy then you will likely continue to question the meaning of life.
Everyone must choose their own path towards happiness to achieve the fullest meaning of their life. :old:

The goal of all life is to perpetuate the existence of the species, often at the expense of all competitor species. There is no great meaning in life; life is just a consequence of the rules of chemistry in the universe, no different than the rules that create water out of hydrogen and oxygen.

You are only 13 years older than me and I can guarantee you that you would have more to answer for than I would if we weren't just worm food once dead. Ok guys, lets not turn this into a religious discussion. Do it in a PM if you really want to.
-
The OP asked what is the meaning of life to you and not to try and prove why you are right about it. Life is different for everyone.
It's true as you get older you will change your opinion. :old: Some noted atheists have changed thier tune as they approach the end.
In your 20's you go to parties, in your 30's you go to weddings, in your 40's you go to doctors, after that you go to funerals of friends and family. (The lucky ones don't have to watch the others die and pass first.)
In the meantime I'm enjoying the Day I have today. We make this life Heaven or we can make it Hell the choice is yours.

Ok guys, lets not turn this into a religious discussion. Do it in a PM if you really want to.
I hope you're fear of bending or breaking a rule doesn't extend into your whole life. If so you WILL be forever stuck in that dead end job sniffing the bellybutton of the boss in suit and tie.

Well, I THINK..
When do you learn the "REAL Meaning of Life"??

And if not?? To hell with it all!

To rule over everything in this world. to conquer and command the entirety of the human race. To bend even the heavens to my every want and desire.
My peoples will be be by my command. I will be the iron fist demanding obedience of my subservient subjects. They are pitiful vessels to fulfill, serve and pay tribute to my magnificant existance. To not would to be to envoke a wrath worthy of legends, as waves of fire wash over the hapless dissenters. Their very existence will only be by my allowance.
The world will bow down and call. me. king. :t
Oops, that might be ManaWar's

FACTS? You could well be onto something here. Never heard a single fact to prove the existence of a deity
-
FACTS? You could well be onto something here. Never heard a single fact to prove the existence of a deity
i never said anything about a diety, i was referencing the idea of a creator. since you brought it up, our primitive ancestors were very superstitious, to the point that technology we now consider archaic would have been supernatural (good or evil) 10,000 years ago. you have to look at the basis of what constitutes a "god" from the primitive superstitious viewpoint of someone who would have considered a common match as the work of a diety from the heavens...
the more science advances knowledge, the closer we get to finding the real creator of homo sapiens.
-
um...guys were just an alien science experiment. The meaning of our life here is to explain to them where they came from. :D

I am glad to know we are not just worm food......
the things we will "pay" for are the things we have not asked forgiveness for.......I have asked forgiveness for all the bad I have done..... I feel quite secure......someone such as yourself who does not believe.....so does not ask forgiveness....wont be so secure.
I have seen much death(in my life.... I don't need to go to hospitals to see it) I know full well the condition of the world.....that just cements my beliefs even stronger.
I have also seen God's handy work up close and personal....
I am sure you have also but your blindness wont let you see it for what it is.
if the blind lead the blind into a hole....they will both fall in.

Two men watched as a rich man's funeral procession passed by.
"I wonder how much he left behind." one asked the other.
"Every bit of it." his companion answered.
You are tied-in and networked
You've got people to see
You have friends in high places
You've got places to be
You've got plenty of time to make your mark
You've been able to get things done
And all the white shirts will take your calls
You've really had quite a run
Who can you turn to When your life is behind you?
It's all about who you know
It's all about who you know
When you get to the end and you've got nothing to show
It's all about who you know
It's all about who you know

I'm not implicating it to my real life, I got a short leash on me in here so i'm trying not to go too far.
But so far, this is turning into one heck of a good read. Many valid arguments being made in a civil manner, its like the internet's dreaming.

As a hetrosexual male, the meaning of life is simple and divided into two parts.
Need and want.
The need for the first 50 is this:
The want for the remaining years is "I just want to take a good dump with no issues today..."

Life is about these 4 things: Spectacles (Ray Bans), Testicles (plenty of use from them), Wallet (good stash of cash), and Watch (Seiko or Breitling).

Perdweeb, I think you boiled that one down nicely :aok.
But in all seriousness, I think the meaning of life is: http://movemequotes.com/9255/ (http://movemequotes.com/9255/).
Basically, respect others, and enjoy what you have.
And I would like to ask we keep the religion out of this discussion. If you believe, go ahead and say so. If you don't, go ahead and say so. But please don't decide to be a dick, and pull the whole "well I'm not going to argue with you, because I'm trying to be the bigger person" thing.
