Is he really meaning what he said, or was he just demonstrating some sense of humour?
-
He is a politician. Do you actually believe what they/he said?
-
He meant it but he never claimed to be an expert on flying machines.
I always assumed that oxygen masks would deploy for fires as well as depressurization.

as far as I know oxygen masks will not deploy for fires. Fire + oxygen =bad. Infact I saw an episode of air disasters that smoke filled the cabin but no oxygen masks fell. People weren't able to breath. When they landed and opened the cabin door only a few people made it out before the fire burst through the cabin and killed many. The oxygen from opening the cabin door caused the fire to almost explode outward. Kinda scary really

Oxy would really make the fire hot.
-
The masks can be deployed manually from the cockpit AFAIK. I wonder if they would not help with breathing in case of smoke and by fire, lack of oxygen. Fire consumes oxygen very fast, but there will be no pressure fall, so the auto system will not work. The masks fall in case of pressure fall....that's what you have to listen to before any proper flight.
Anyway, back to the topic. Romney did not look as if he was joking at all! And if that is not a bad attempt of some humor, I wonder.......

You understand that you're violating the TOU's don't you?
And I had to violate them just to remind you Angus.
You should know better of all people, as long as you've been here.

I don't see how rolling down the windows in an airplane is a political issue.

He is questioning a politician's integrity in his 2nd post. If you can't see that, perhaps Lazik surgery would help.

That was a blanket statement which makes it in-bounds. When I was in college there was some racist vandalism threatening violence towards minorities. The University's head of PR said during a press conference that it is probably the work of a white male, because they are the root of most evil. She was not disciplined because the school stood by her statement because it was a 'blanket' statement and didn't single out a small enough group.
Also, my vision is good enough to be a NFL ref.

Did she quote Howard Stern's "Kill kill kill the white man. Kill him until he is dead. Kill the white man?"

Question the integrity of all in public office. We have the first foreigner in the top office..... who knows what is next. I really thought we would have a woman....

At one point in time back in '08 I was thinking "anyone but Hitlery", but now I'm thinking "anyone but the current POTUS".... and I mean anyone.
As far as the airplane window thing goes, I think it was a "had to have been there" moment the media is having fun with like they always do.

He meant it but he never claimed to be an expert on flying machines.
Remind you of anyone?

Oh, wow!
Yet no answer to my speculation though.....

Imagine you have no knowledge of jets other than you charter them frequently.
Imagine it was your wife in that plane.
The guy was rattled and trying to fulfill the demands of the media hounds. Nothing to see here, move along.

That may all be true, but he still reminds me more and more of Dan Quayle every day.

Shuffler.... he has a legitimate US Birth Certificate.
He is an English speaking negro born in Hawaii and raised in Chicago.
Now unless I am very much mistaken Hawaii and Chicago are both American states subject to American law. If such is the case then he is not a foreigner, besides being a Texan he is about as American as you can get.
As a foreigner myself it absolutely irritates the hell out of me calling him a foreigner, he isn't he is a US citizen, born on US Soil. If you say "HIS RELATIVES AINT AMERCUN!!!!!!!!!!!!" (affected redneck accent on the internet is hard). Then you can say goodbye to every US president for the past 240 years.

The first time I had a real life serious smoke in the cockpit situation... I opened the window.
The whole thing is stupid. He obviously isn't advocating passenger control over airline cabin pressurization, and even if taken completely as a joke it has a bit of technical background and historical truth to it that makes it even funnier.
To put it further into perspective... President Obama and the State Dept let an ambassador get killed on a 9/11 anniversary after several clear warnings, and then blamed it on a US citizen's exercise of his first amendment rights. Then a week later the State Dept (and today SecDef) finally gets around to saying it was a terrorist attack but won't quite go so far as to admit that like everyone else already knows, it was pre-planned. That's all OK apparently, so the media focuses on the precise wording Romney used when expressing his relief at his wife's airplane landing safely after a scary inflight emergency.
What the hell is wrong with this country, that 48% of Americans (per the latest nationwide poll) think this is ok?

Because 48% of us don't think the inflamatory video was a coverup originating from or is being used by the white house administration as such since it was posted on the internet weeks in advance.
Please pass the tin foil.

While tiptoe-ing into the forbidden zone (Skuzzy-wise), I'll offer this bit of perspective on the subject. This is not an unprecedented incident. Remember Beirut and Reagan? Cyprus and Ford? Saudi Arabia and Nixon? As far as I know we didn't go to war over any of those Ambassadors (and US soldiers) getting killed.

Read Reagan's diary and you will see what we did regarding Beirut. Among other actions he sent a battleship and other forces and basically shelled the origination point of any hostile fire. There is a huge range of options between apologizing for somehow forcing people to riot and set up a massive ambush to murder an ambassador, and declaring war on a nation. I don't think anyone is calling for "war" against Libya. People ARE however calling for the truth about a massive coverup regarding how a sitting president is apologizing for the US being somehow wrong for having, as the very first amendment to our nation's constitution, the right of free expression, and calling for some sort of explanation of why an obscure and not very well made video is being blamed for a series of riots and a very well planned and executed ambush of our ambassador. Further, people want an explanation as to why that very ambassador's messages expressing concerns for the security of both himself and his entire diplomatic mission were not acted upon, especially on the anniversary of the single worst and most damaging attack on US soil in history while the nation is STILL AT WAR with those responsible for the 9/11 attacks.
All we've had is a coverup, trying to blame some obscure US citizen for the murder of a US ambassador, and an apology for the US daring to have freedom of expression/speech.
Frankly, trying to say other past presidents did nothing following attacks on US soil or our embassies is a pretty dumb thing to do especially when you don't really know what they DID do. Reagan responded with highly targeted force plus the most successful diplomatic efforts in the middle east we've ever had. Reagan's efforts led to over 30 years of relative stability with Egypt as our stauchest ally in the area, until President Obama deliberately threw Mubarak under the bus thereby destroying any incentive of any middle eastern or north African leader to cooperate with us. 30 years of diplomatic efforts led by Reagan and Carter, down the tubes, leading directly to the ambush and murder of an ambassador.
-
eagl can you provide a quote or link to the apology you mention above?
I'm pretty sure it's a figment of your imagination, as no apology for the video was ever issued
there was something along the lines of a disclaimer saying that the US govt doesn't support religious intolerance, which is not the same thing
-
Here's one of dozens of links to the advertisements shown on Libyan TV.
http://www.ihatethemedia.com/obama-administration-is-running-70000-apology-ads-in-pakistan
Quibbling over the exact wording is pointless. Blaming (and "rejecting") an obscure video for riots and a murder amounts in fact to an apology and "over there" it's seen as a sign of weakness. I've read quite a bit of relevant history, taken more than one regional/cultural training course taught by people who grew up "over there", and spent 6 months working with and talking talking to both older and younger Iraqis. By their cultural standards, weakness is a gift from god to be exploited. They were pretty clear on this subject, even among the most westernized of the young officers I talked to. Even job-related and otherwise "honorable" cooperation among peer-level military officers will be taken advantage of whenever possible.

You're an idiot getting angry about an apology that never existed

An oxygen fire on an airplane, especially at altitude would be very bad and I think would result in a BIG boom. Heres a link to what a hyperbaric chamber fire is like:
http://hbotechblog.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/hyperbaric_and_hypobaric_chamber_fires_sheffield.pdf
As you can see, lots of fatalities, very few survivors. I imagine, since a modern jet liner is basically a pressurized aluminum tube, you'd get similar results.
Lots of these -----> :angel:

Still it's kinda weird. Everyone knows the oxygen will not start to flow before the canister is activated by pulling the cord. So I guess they're worried also about the leftover oxygen people exhale actually? The problem is that fire burns in conditions where people already suffocate so it's a no win situation.

I'm really starting to miss Skuzzy moderating the O'Club. You idiots need to all shut up and actually act like adults. This is really embarrassing watching some of you, and [sarcasm] great [/sarcasm] knowing that eventually my generation will have to support and take care of yours. I don't want to be sandwiched by two generations of infants.

My experience is limited to working with commercial divers in hyperbaric chambers constantly using O2 to help rid the body of nitrogen to prevent the bends. In that environment, the chamber is so saturated with O2, a fire can be started with static electricity. That being said, this is just an educated guess: If the cabin of an airplane is filling with smoke and the O2 mask drops in front of you, you're going to put it on. O2 is going to flow and without proper ventilation, O2 will build up in the cabin and... boom. And yes, a fire in a pressurized, O2 saturated environment is a no win situation. The people inside are going to die. If you're outside, run. I cant find a link but there was a chamber in Italy that had a fire, it exploded, wiped out almost an entire hospital and they found the chamber door over a mile away.

Propaganda is a powerful mind control tool. Are you strong enough not to fall for the lies? Most media outlets are trying to sell a story not give you facts and truth.
It worked so well in the past to control populations why would the socialists ever stop trying. There's a sucker born every minute.

So, yet, after 4 pages in the thread, there is not a single person who will give an opinion about whether mr. Romney would have been serious with his comment?
I rest baffled.

He wasn't serious. On a more serious note: Airplanes do have windows that roll down.
