i'm trying to get a short video clip to upload right now.......
-
I think its a moth cocoon, not too sure though, I have seen them behind clapboards of older houses.
-
I'm no expert by any means, but it does look similar to this picture of a moth cocoon. Methinks Homer is right.

dam....'cept for color, that looks just like it.........i thought cocoons were soft, almost like webbing...........

Holy crap you found Mothra!
-
My thought was cicada pupa, but the more I'm looking, the more it seems they skip that stage, so yeah, I'd have to say moth. Try looking at your states DEC (or equivalent) website to see what the various lifestages of your regions indigenous moths are.
-
It could be a cicada, they stay in the pupa stage for years. Something must have disturbed it for it to be above ground this time of year.
:salute
-
Looks like a White Lined Sphynx coccoon. Big moth. Awesome lookin though.
EDIT: Possibly a hummingbird moth.
EDIT#2: It's either a Regal or Imperial Moth.

Too many variables to answer. Best to just read through this. Especially the pupae section. If it still wiggles when you press on it, it has a chance. It looks dark enough that it's probably been in the ground for a few weeks.
If you really want to see it develop, I'd put it in a closed box with a few inches of dirt in the bottom outside and bury it about an inch deep. After a week or so (of gradually cooling temps), bring it inside, and make a hammock in the fridge for it like the article suggests. At this point, it's waiting for spring.... You can try to artificially force it to develop early, but it's a crap shoot. Most only live a few days (even outside), but it's cool to watch the change.

it's only about 2 inches long. it has a nasty stinger looking thing on one end. it was partially sticking out of the ground as shown in the first pic. i was simply walking past, and noticed something in the grass that didn't look like it "belonged", if that makes any sense.
yea.....i wanted to see if it was alive, or would do anything. but in my defense, i did poke it gently with that stick, lol

I was beginning to think nobody else knew what a great movie was.... Finally.... Lol
Its funny, as a little kid, I always watched that movie and loved it. But after watching it, I would always refuse to walk on the floor for a while, even though we had a basement underneath lol.
Another I haven't seen in a very long time is Tremors 3 with the ass-blasters.

Funny now that you found that, I came across the caterpillar of one of those large, colorful moths that I'd never seen before up here in northern NY a couple of months ago. Doubt it was the same species, but still kinda cool- I thought the only big ones we had up here were Luna Moths, and even they aren't very common.
-
Luna Moths are very cool :aok
