Almost everything I want to say about this is banned by a forum rule, so I'm trying to be careful.

We should have an official national language, English.
But the patch on the back of that jacket looks like hate bait.   :frown:

My forefathers spoke Russian and Polish, but they learned English when they came to America.  They became Americans, flag waving patriots.  Old Glory, not La Raza.

I've worked side by side in construction with many good but foreign Latino folk who are here because they want to work and want a better life for their families, just like my forefathers.  But the system to get them here legally is broken, and they didn't go through any functional process to get here.  No health screening, no documentation.  Nothing to protect them or us.  Nothing to screen out criminals.  The system is BROKEN.  We need to sort this **** out.

Let me say this too: Given a choice between these good Latino folk, and our population of multi-generation domestic welfare recipients, I'll gladly share my neighborhood with these folk.  And, if these families, rooted in family values and work ethic, if they are the future picture of America, it's not at all bad.

The majority of immigrants are actually legal, the illegal ones are few (on average) and I've never heard of someone being forced to learn a different language. However imo, if you come to a live in a different country, you should accept and take on the language, culture, ethics etc of your destination. If you aint willing to integrate then go home. But thats just me.

I was at the hospital visiting someone yesterday and they had a list of languages they can talk to you in. This is totally necessary in an emergency. People from all over the world visit or move to the US legally every day.

Emotions make people focus on trivial pursuits and not see the problem was not created by the "illegals".

The real problem is the language politicians speak.

^^^^^   Lots of truth in this.

The USA was founded and built by immigrants.  That being said, the system does indeed need fixing.  In addition, immigrants should have cultural and ancestral pride, but plan on being an American.

Allegiance to America
Wave the American flag
Loyalty to the American people
Pay taxes
Order cheesesteaks in English  :D

Makes me know I am not the only one.

When I was 13 we lived in Venezuela for about 6 months. My parents paid $2000.00 each for my brother and I to go to an english speaking school.

We should not be forced to hire teachers that speak other languages to teach foreign students.

Have no problem with this, as long as they are using them to teach English...

I would not expect to move to and live in a foreign country without learning the language and culture.

I'm right in the thick of it down here. There are businesses here you should just avoid if you don't speak Spanish and want to get your order right. "To here, or for go?"

I've had people get pissed at me because I couldn't answer their questions in Spanish.

It just isn't good for people to have another way to be fragmented.

so true,  I have worked with a few mexican guys, for the most part they work to feed their families as well as myself, the one that drove me crazy was the one that stood over by the truck pointing at me and speaking spanish.  I dont speak spanish nor do I believe I should have to, after all it is the USA.  If I went to mexico, or any other foriegn country, I would have to speak that language. I agree the system is BROKEN.  I have to agree that I would rather have a working class neighborhood than one of only multi-generation leeches off of my paycheck.

I worked in Salford Manchester for three years as a supervisor on shift.

It was like the flippen UN, the Muslims would not speak to the Hindu's, the Poles would not talk to the Rumanians, the English would argue with Irish.

We had a guy from Nigeria who liked everyone :)

At break time we all had a brew and biscuits, its funny at 3:30 in the morning on a night shift we all looked the same, Miserable :)

The Eritrean  guy always tried to get me to come to his Mosque, he did not realize in Britain we are all pagans and watched football :old:

The image in the OP makes me think the same as perdweeb

However, I totally agree that if you are living in an English speaking country you should learn to speak English, not expect the natives to learn your language

but that reminds me, I'm sure I read somewhere that Spanish speaking people are no longer a minority in the US, so maybe in the future you will go kinda bilingual like some Canadian provinces and have things written in both languages :)

America has become the land of convenience and guilt. We feel guilty for everything. Apparently we are the cause of all the worlds ills, thus the guilt. One prominent economist noted that multiculturalism really translates into worship everything that is not American, attack everything that is.

The convenience thing is what will kill us. We have put a large amount of convenience on the credit cards. The GAO notes that our total debt broke $16 trillion. That is chump change to the real problem, which is future outlays. What is projected in our life time ABOVE anticipated revenues from taxes exceeds $100 trillion! Some flat line estimates (flat lines never happen in life, at some point they always deviate) put it at close to $200 trillion.

Immigrants (both legal and illegal) bring great benefits to America in many ways. The cost and loss is associated with our guilt and convenience. This leads to spending much money where some old fashioned 'get with the program' toughness would do. The cost of pandering for votes in other languages via services that should be done in one language would do just fine.

Immigration is great. How we pander to it is the problem.

Just my two economic cents.

Boo

Say what you want about Americans, but my Bosnian friend thinks we are the opposite of what you say, compared to Europeans.

It's not a good thing to have language barriers in a society. Since the majority here speak English, it's appropriate to expect immigrants to learn it rather than expect Americans to accommodate everyone who speaks Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, Arabic, etc.

I don't know how many immigrants you know, but I know several who have lived here for 20 years or more and have not made any effort to learn English.

When Americans choose to emigrate, I am guessing that you would consider it rude and arrogant if they don't make an effort to use the primary language of their host country, but when others come here, we are rude and arrogant if we don't bend over backwards to ensure that they never have to learn the primary language used here?

What a bunch of horseshiite!!

If your goal in life is to mow rich people's yards, and go to the emergency room on the taxpayers dime every time you or your kids get sick, by all means don't learn English. Every minute someone is in this country not bothering to learn English is wasted

Isn't that what America is all about? Having the freedom to get on with your life pretty much as you see fit without anyone forcing you to do anything you don't want to do like learning another language. Even if that include restricting your opportunities by failing to learn the language then so be it.

But otherwise it's a good point. If you move to another country you should learn the native language. It's only common sense. Although it has to be said. In some countries nearly everyone learns English and won't let you try out your few local phrases, interrupting with English.

Having said that, don't bother learning Irish if you move to Ireland. There are more Polish speakers here than Irish speakers. I heard of one guy, Japanese who took the trouble to learn Irish before he arrived and was extremely puzzled when hardly anyone knew what he was talking about! He might as well have been speaking Japanese.

As for the original. In all seriousness who is forcing who to learn a language other than English? It's just a troublemaking patch.

That is not a big issue to me.

What is a big deal, however, is when business transactions have to be conducted or when routine work duties have to be performed.  There should be clear communication  and the native tongue (even though it is not official) should be spoken.

My grandparents spoke German a lot at home.  When they conducted business or were dealing with the public, they spoke English.

This theory can be applied to any country, any language.  I had a friend that moved to Japan for work.  He learned Japanese, even though most of his colleagues knew English.

We have the Grand Coulee dam, LOL! Among countless other power generating dams..
We are one of the great bread baskets (and Fruit baskets) of the world..
We have the greatest anchorages on the west side of North America..
Including the Trident Missile Sub Base at Bangor..
I could go on and on, listing the reasons we could stand on our own..

If the 4 states of the PNW broke away, it would be a new world power..

I read a article about it, it was due to a big drive by the Yanks encouraging immigrants from Europe due to exspansion of the US economy and a shortfall in population, the common language for these people was german apparently.

My dad is American(German) and my mom is hispanic, I grew up around my hispanic side of my family, all I know about my dad is that he was in the navy and his name. My mom always spoke in American( britts call it English). I also speak Spanish. I believe that if you move to a place you should learn the language and if you dont want to, then stfu and move on to a country that speaks your language.
The Omish say "English" is the devil.(language, dress code, music, etc.) . Yet, the Omish speak German, the same language Adolf Hitler spoke. Try New York, sounds like you are in Israel, or  Palestine. Hispanics been part of the USA since Nevada,New Mexico, Colorado, California, Texas. One place that makes me sick, puerto rico, they want to be a state but not even their law enforcement speaks English..sheeesh

Well, this starts to sound different than "German was the most common language in America", more like that German was the most spoken native language by immigrants during a certain period. Which makes a lot more sense to me  ;)

Well, this starts to sound different than "German was the most common language in America", more like that German was the most spoken native language by immigrants during a certain period. Which makes a lot more sense to me  ;)
There were more Germans than probably any other non-British group around the revolution, and we got a huge number of German immigrants during the mid 19th century for obvious reasons, but there is on top of that for some reason a (fairly widespread) 'myth' that German was just as close to becoming the official language while the constitution was being written as English was due to the number of speakers. I've never really read anything concrete about that though and I really don't think that there was such a significant number of German speaking immigrants at that time.

Yes people from other nations hate the US so much they keep coming over and staying.

they keep coming over because they are dirt poor, and luckily for them many American businesses would rather pay ridiculously low wages to immigrants than proper wages to American citizens :aok

Texas is the only state where secession is a viable option.

You dont need imigrants to have low wages.. All the factorys and companys that moved over seas to places like India and China, They f.....d up, because of the greedy owners shutting down their factorys because in India you pay 5¢ per day to each employee. Factorys that didnt go over seas are now looking at bankruptsy because they can not compete with the cheap product china and india make. Imigrants didnt ruin your wage, unless you work at a taco stand, picking veggies, or landscaping.. What other wage have they affected?? What?? Cant be a Dr or Lawyer because imigrants cause them to have low wages? Lmfao you have to be stupid to believe that.  Just think about it.

Low wages mean less money for people to spend which means companies go belly up.

I laugh when someone from india says the companies went over there because of their expertise in something.....  lol

Then when told it is because of cheap labor they spout that they make good money. They fail to realize that good money in india is less than what someone on the public dole gets in the US.

My biggest issue is taxes and the lack of paying them by illegal immigrants, of any origin.

There are between 12 and 20 million illegal immigrants in the US.  I would not consider this a huge problem if none of them availed themselves of the benefits government spending but, unfortunately, this is not the case.  If just half of them paid $10/year, perhaps we could all see some relief.  Imagine   if half of them paid paid their full tax burden...

BTW do not confuse illegals with immigrants..... immigrants come here legally. Illegals are law breakers from the moment they step foot on our soil.

This better not be a ploy to start teaching Abenaki in NH schools.
Other than that, besides reports in the 1800's of Americans forcing the native tribes to learn English, I can't recall ever hearing of anyone in the US being forced to learn the language of any immigrant.
The picture from the OP is the usual half wit comment with no basis in fact. Unless of course guncrasher is right and it was seen on a reservation. That is understandable.

One that I remember from some years ago..
A business owner, has a foreign customer come in, very poor language skills..
Memory says Cambodian.. He tries to communicate, just doing business..
Communication just wasn't possible, so the potential customer starts to get
angry, obviously by his actions.. Started having a temper tantrum, throwing
card and brochure displays, yelling in Cambodian.. Biz owner say get out, OK...
Guy leaves, door slammin, tires burnin, etc etc.. Biz owner forgets about it..

Weeks later, a process server shows up, with papers for a discrimination suit..
Biz owner won the case, but the legal fees bled him dry.. Ended up losing his
business over it.. Ruined the guys life, for nothing..

This has happened more than once..
There are lawyers just looking for stuff like this..

semp is the biggest racial bigot on the boards. Except for schlowy (if he is actually on the boards anyway).

really which man is forcing me homeless?  i never said anybody is forcing me to be homeless.  the reason I am going to is that my gf is out of a job, she's not in the best of health and that is draining a lot of money from our account to the point of wont be long before I am forced to either choose to pay the rent or the medications that she needs.  so I choose the medication and that is cool with me.  you dont see me heading taking her to the ER for the so called "free doctors".

and for you to call me a bigot just shows how little you know about me.  I just went to an hr investigation of a manager that was accused of being a racist by another hispanic employee.  not only did I prove to them that the manager wasnt a racist but that the hispanic employee is the racist.  he's out of a job and is well deserved.

and by the way 90% of my friends are white not including my gf's family.  I wont stand for anybody being discriminated against, be it brown, yellow, white or whichever color you prefer.

you dont see me associating here in aces high with the brown population only, do you?  99.99% of the friends I have in aces high arent brown.

the problem that you guys have is that you cannot accept the fact that there is actually racism in this country.  it is not widespread as it once was, but there is still a small minority of idiots that think one race is superior to other.  and all of those idiots come in all different colors.

I get looks and words not often but I get some from people that think a brown guy like me shouldnt be dating a white woman.  there's also some brown people that think i shouldnt be dating a white woman.  any of them that think I should date whoever is willing to date me they can kiss my rear.

One of my closest friends is a second generation Latino immigrant.  He is proud of his Mexican heritage but is still patriotic to America.  He is very smart, speaks better English than I do, is a hard worker and he is a proud supporter of our military.  His family moved to LA from Mexico looking for work, but was eventually forced to move because of the gang violence that also moved to LA.

My problem isn't the immigrants, it's all the drugs and violence that they seem to bring with them.

You're implying that they were seated ahead of you simply because they were white and you are not.

Were they the store owners?  The owner's kids?
Did they have reservations?
Were they meeting a party already seated?
Were they known regular customers?

There are non-white folk who filter all their observation through a lens of prejudice. If you go to a large corporate office and tell a hundred people there that someone brought free fried chicken to share for lunch. Guaranteed, at least one person is going to jump out of their chair and say "What are you saying about me!"

I believe a society is healthier when there is at least some shared culture, including language, rather than large groups who have only an economic relationship with America, arriving in huge numbers, creating "zones" where there is zero pressure to assimilate.
