Title: Where are the rivers?
Post by: 68EZPkns on October 12, 2012, 10:23:35 AM
Please Hitech,on the next new maps add major rivers.I would like to see large rivers with multiple birdges.Rivers large enough for PTs to use.
Id like to see major and minor bridges that can be destroyed and can be resupplied to rebuild them.Should have lots of ack, both ai and manable to defend them with GV bases on both ends of them.
Id like to see these rivers be the starting borders of the 3 sides. And to spwn gvs across them your bridges would have to be intact.

I'd love to have maps with rivers in them, especially if they separate 2 gv spawn points and the only way over the river is a drift/ford or a legit bridge.  Say now... THAT would add another bit of strategy, wouldn't it?  Horde inbound?  Then quick go destroy the bridge and prevent M3's from getting to the town!   :aok

Rivers, gulleys, buttes, etc, there are a lot of earthen objects that are missing from the maps.  Heck, it would be nice to have tank taps along the gv base just off the pad where the main hanger is.  Say now....   ANOTHER use for engineers!  Deploy them and have hedgehogs, trenches, etc, part of AH!   :aok

This is the wish list forum, yes?   :)

There's already a MA map with long navigable rivers: Grinder.  It doesn't have any bridges though.  There have been special events maps with destroyable bridges over rivers in the past however, so it is certainly possible.

Edit: actually Grinder does have bridges over the river in the city, which, if you have infinite time, you can drive a PT to.  Unfortunately, the PT doesn't fit under the bridge.

It would be great if MA map builders could have a few more objects to play with. There are a lot of things like bridges already in the terrain editor, but that are forbidden to be used in MA maps. One reason for this is that faulty objects can cause the map or players' FEs to crash, so they have to be tested very thoroughly before they can be cleared for MA use. HTC can absolutely not afford to have the MA crash.

Another possible problem I can see with rivers and bridges is that players can't tell where the river is if they turn off all the graphics options (detailed water etc.) on their FE. Narrow rivers just vanish in this case and a player could drive over what looks like dry land and get stuck in an invisible river without knowing it was there. I believe GVers have a habit of turning off detailed graphics not just for framerate reasons but to make it easier to spot enemies. This is one thing that puts me off trying GVs, the other being spawn camping.

If the problems could be fixed I'd love to see bridges added to the MA. Either as a standalone object or as part of a new base, perhaps a V base with hangars on one side of the river and the map room on the other.

V base vs V base,
With a bridge between them..
Engineers to blow it up or rebuild it..  :aok

Talk about a meat grinder..
Like the hoarders vs the wasters in Dante's Inferno  :aok

The river being the border.. The bridge crossing would be
mandatory for any advance into enemy territory..

Unless you take the base behind it by goon, then attack
the bridge base from both sides at once..

Possibilities for broken hearts are endless.. :aok

Tank pillbox snipefest(IMO). Give the  Stuka, and Hurri II to pop tanks to loosen up the stalemate and I'd go for ir.

people will just camp the bridge like they camp the spawns now.

For the most part the terrain in the game has had no real impact on game strategy  and that’s a shame.  It appears to me  that most , if not all the maps in the game, have been provided by a community of players, I thank them for their a well done job,   but they are armature  map builders,  not professional game builders.
I  don’t know that the tools exists that would allow the guys building the maps to actually build a map with a bridge that spans a river.  I’ve always thought that it would be great if a new type of troop was included in the game, an AI that repaired or built bridges or towns or airfields.  So that when you destroyed buildings the Engineers would start to repair and rebuild.
That when a group captured a bridge, or town or base, they would have to bring in troops  and supplies to rebuild that damaged base.   Would slow down the horde and require a new strategy for base taking.

Yes, the tools exist and there are various maps that actually do have bridges that you can drive across and destroy. However, these maps are only used in the AvA and the SEA. As stated above the MA has different requirements and new 3D Objects have to be thoroughly tested and vetted before being allowed to be used in the MA. The SEA arenas and the AvA can crash and have had the rare crash do to a map issue over the past several years. The MA can not afford a map crash do to a faulty terrain.
