Title: Unmarked Strat targets
Post by: TheRhino on October 19, 2012, 08:43:32 PM
I think to add a bit more of a challenge to aces high (and to give the storch more purpose) all strat targets should be unmarked. I haven't played for a while so I don't know if the strat targets have been separated from the cities yet, but if they haven't they should be. It would also be cool if the strat targets changed locations each time a new tour began, just to add another degree of realism.

Of course, this would work best with the 2008 strat system (I think).

Why would you need to use a Storch for that?  It seems more the role of a PR airplane such as the Ar234, F-5 (P-38), F-8/Mosquito PR.Mk XVI or Spitfire PR Mk XI.

That's the first time i ever heard or read a proposal of making the Fi-156 a strategic reconnaissance plane  :huh

Point taken. Forget about what I said about the Storch, but it would be an opportunity to get some hardcore recon missions going in a spitfire and what not.

Too gamey, IMO.  After all, the location of strategic targets was typically never in doubt in real life. I understand the desire to give a reason to do recon, but strategic recon would be boring for most players.  Now, scouting for ships is a different story.  That has purpose in the game. Same thing for hunting for GVs when your base is under attack (though typically that is an armed recon, since most will do that in an attack-armed FB).

Now if you want to give more purpose to the Storch, you could provided defensive arty batteries at bases, and allow the Storch pilot to call in fire missions on advancing enemy GVs.  Back in the Warbirds days, in Dawn of Aces you could call in artillery barrages on enemy bases from any two-man a/c.  Something like that would be kind of cool, methinks.

I 1000% agree with the OP.  There needs to be a fog of war element to this game.  Base spotted / base shows up on map.  Strats, railways, CV....etc.

obviuosly htc disagrees, the game is going the other direction, if anything.. (see .dt command)

How about this?  Add V1 and V2 rockets to the game with the launch locations not shown on the map.  Have the host periodically launch V1's and V2's at the enemy strats.  Add recon planes; basically just a hanger option to load a camera instead of gun packages, and different skins (there is already a recon Spit skin I think).  If the recon pilot finds the rocket launch site he can give an approximate location over the radio and if he successfully lands the location of the launch facility would show on the map.  It could then be targeted by bombers or jabo and if destroyed it rebuilds in a different random location, unmarked on the map, after a suitable delay (say 30 min for V1 and 2 hours for V2).

The V2 would only have to be rendered up to say 50K alt then, after the proper flight time, damage could be inflicted in a randomized location over the target strat.  The V1 would have to be rendered as AI the whole flight path as it can be intercepted.

I suspect this could never be done because of several problems.  It would require a change to the host and the client to allow changes to the map  (Edit: actually not; it already does that for CVs.)  There is also the difficulty of plopping down a launch facility at a random location on the map; it might go on a hillside etc.  Also, the density of planes in AH (i.e. the number of planes flying around) is way higher than in real WWII and the survivability of photo recon planes is likely to be small.
