Title: Gary Grigsby Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich
Post by: Butcher on October 27, 2012, 10:40:40 AM
Myself and few friends always have a tournament now and then for classic war games, two months ago it was for Panzer Corps and now we suggested pulling out Gary Grigsby's Eagle Day bombing the Reich. While the Graphics are dated, the game is still a masterpiece.
Basically a little info on the game, you can choose to fly either Allies or Axis, the game focuses on different scenarios from the Battle of Britain, or 1941 - Italy or the full Bombing the Reich campaign. You have dozen of options to choose how to play the game, you can play whether AI or Multiplayer.

For this tournament me and 3 other friends are playing for score, using the Battle of Britain scenario which is 79 turns total. I was chosen to play the RAF, here below is the map - Targets in the Orange/Red were hit and damaged recently -
I have been very fortunate my friend has had a very hard time focusing on bombing Airfields. One thing thats great is you can control ALL your air units.

Here is one of my very secret weapons, the Whirlwind, tasked with shooting down bombers - and boy do they serve quite well! I only wish more of these babies were available as the armament is outstanding vs the standard 8x 303s!
Note you can assign any squadron any plane available, but you must watch your inventory, if you run out of planes, you lose!

Here's a list of planes shot down to date, I am not doing to badly, I manage to match the luftwaffe in sorties although I am really overworked right now.
My biggest problem is trying to eliminate the 109s or bombers, so far its been a troublesome problem as they sweep me before I can get off the ground.

Here's the campaign Summary, 79 turns total - I am on turn 27 and surviving some how.

Although the game hasn't been updated in a long time and the AI can be a little...under the weather, the game still is quite wonderful especially against other players - where production and such can really come into play.
You can find this game here http://www.matrixgames.com/store/320/ (http://www.matrixgames.com/store/320/)

While it seems rather pricey for a game, matrix games prides on having some of the best wargames on the market, I have roughly 15 titles from them and most I still play today. For your bucks, this game is far worth it if you are a strategy war gamer.

I still have the original copy, got the game installed too, it just takes way too long to finish a turn (30min+), and one campaign ranges from 8 to 800 turns. Plus my original version of the game only runs at 800x600 resolution, which makes everything rather hard to read.

I might check it out.  If I can stand Star Wars Rebellion, I can stand this.

Yeah, I have the matrix games version which I can run any screen size, I am on the BoB campaign for now, I will probably go to Axis to do a full 800 turn campaign from 43+..

Already want to start research and production on Me-262s and Ta-152s - dreading the P-51 swarm :\

Hey Butcher, is there another script to change to make the game menus work without being transparent and unusable like there was with the War in the Pacific AE?
