Title: Three screens without Matrox
Post by: Ron on October 30, 2012, 07:28:43 AM

Hello learned folks,

I would like to add two more screens to my set up, and I'm aware of the MATROX Triple head solution that supports AH2.

However, I'm worried about, and  don't want to loose my fast frame rates that I currently have with my new machine.

Please can anyone advise if it possible to achieve the equivalent resolution, and triple screen effect of the MATROX solution with a high end triple output video card, and keep the framerates up..?

Many thanks,

Ron   :salute

there is no mystery, if you add 2 screens your resolution will triple and the hit on your framerates will be significant. To keep your current framerate you will have to lower details, except if you have reserve power not currently used with the 60fps cap.

Thanks Noir,

I understand that.
That is why I'm asking if three screens can be run in AH2 using a three output high end video card as apposed to the MATROX solution.

My "uneducated" guess would be that an integrated three output card would be more efficient than a MATROX add on box.

I do it with a radeon 6870 using eyefinity

http://www.amd.com/fr/products/technologies/amd-eyefinity-technology/Pages/eyefinity.aspx

2 monitors using HDMI/VGA/DVI, and a third one using DisplayPort. You could do all three in displayport, you need at least one monitor in displayport.

Here is a good tutorial if using Nvidea cards. I am currently using 2 570's in sli, on triple 24's. I have the 2 outside ones on HDMI cables and the third on the DVI port to HDMI adapter. My framerates stay at 60 fps.

Thanks guys, that's great info.

Nuke, What framerates are you getting, and do you have to turn down the detail..?

well I had to drop all forms of antialias and some ground details to have a good solid 60fps again, the 6870 is a little short on video memory for this kinds of resolutions.

I checked my setup and it has a:-

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

So it looks like it might be worth giving it a go to try it first before upgrade. I didn't think the card had three outputs until I saw what Nuke was using...!

Thanks for the help guys.

actually it all depends on your system.  I play with 3 screens using sli evga 465 cards and a 2500k sandy bridge cpu.  I play with full frames all sliders at full and shadows at 4096 without the em on.  if I use em then frame rates do take a hit.  otherwise I can play with a zillion bogies up on the air around a cv with no problems.

I actually tried to research what a matrox is then I found out it was more money  than buying 2 additional screens.

I have two Gigabyte Ti550 SLI'ed, and three 24" monitors, but I cannot get Aces High to recognize them. What am I doing wrong?
Win 7 64 bit, fully updated, and Nvidia is using the Oct 10th drivers. All other patches, drivers done.

All the Matrox product does is fool your display card into thinking that you have a very wide resolution monitor instead of 3 separate ones. The rest is up to the power of your card. If you have an Nvidia gpu the matrox may be necessary even if you have a relatively fast card because nvidia requires SLI for multimonitor setups. AMD can run multiple screens with just one card using the Eyefinity.

Just remember that with 3 screens you will need a *high* end card, not mid-end if you want to play any current games without a slideshow.
