When we ran this last year, we had 140 players -- and it was a blast!
Welcome to This Day in WWII: Pearl Harbor!
All are welcome to play. Unlimited-life event.
Runs on December 7th in Special Events II Arena at:
-- 8:30 pm Eastern Time.
-- 3 pm Eastern Time.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Objective: Kill enemies, sink enemy ships, and destroy enemy objects.
Event duration: 2 hours, but play as much or as little as you want of that.
Unlimited lives, but arena enforces at most 2 deaths in any 7-minute span. It says "Your max deaths have been exceeded" until you can fly again.
Allies (Bishops):
-- At land bases a38, 39, and 40:
-- P-40C, F4F-4.
-- M16 (as AA defenses).
-- Two TG's near island represent Pacific fleet.
Axis (Knights):
-- Two TG's (C1 and C2) start in 17.9.
-- A6M2, D3A1, B5N2.
-- PT boats (as extra AA defenses).
Ships stay down once sunk.
No dot radar is available -- only sector counters.
Ammo Bunkers, Fighter Hangars, and Vehicle Hangars stay down 1 minute.
5", 8", and 40 mm guns are disabled, auto ack turned way down, so torpedo bombers have a chance.
All ships 12,000 lbs of ord to sink (two torpedoes will do it).
CM will periodically jump US TG's to keep them in Pearl Harbor sector.
CM will periodically jump IJN TG's to keep them at least a sector away from Pearl Harbor.
Points:
-- 1 point per kill of enemy.
-- 0.1 point per object destroyed.
-- 20 points per enemy ship sunk.
Side split 2:1 axis to allies.

This is the most-popular of the "This Day in WWII" events (where each month, we run an event on the anniversary of a major battle).
Last year's running of Pearl Harbor was enormously fun.
Please mark it on your calendar, gather up friends to join us, and spread the word. The more, the merrier.
<S>!
-
If things go well (and I remember :o), I'll be there. :) Last year was a bit of fun.
-
A Friday night? I might be able to make it if I can remember.
-
I want to fly this, however it is also a FSO night.
Any way to make it work with both events?
I'd love to see December committed to the Pacific Theater for FSO because of this. Perhaps Midway???

This one will end prior to FSO. It starts at 8:30 pm ET.

I will fly allies. Save me a wildcat :)
-
If i remember correctly the last time we ran this the americans upped and circled the base, not actually on the runway at the time of atack
-
Correct.
Think of this as "what if the US had not disregarded radar warnings."
Having the allied side stay at base until the axis shows up to vulch them would not gain enough attendance. Also, in my opinion, that would be less realistic than what we are doing here for several reasons that I can discuss if you would like.
"This Day in WWII" events are themed battles run on the anniversary of the real battle, but they are nowhere near as realistic as, say, scenarios. They are heavily biased towards quick fun and have no rules that players need to follow, so that folks can just jump in and have fun.
-
I'll be there :aok
-
Last year was fun. I'm in.
-
I think I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so!
-
This will be fun
-
Question... with the range on the M16's, all mannable ack disabled on the boats, and auto-ack turned way down, are we relying solely on torpedo drop mishaps to defend the (I am assuming) stationary ships?
Either way, I will be there!
:salute

Defense is through the following:
-- US fighters going after Japanese D3A's and B5N's.
-- Ships are moving and can be maneuvered (as they are just normal task groups).
-- People can man 20 mm ack on the ships.
-
It was fun last year but can we please place the American ships inside the harbor where they're supposed to be? It would be fun to man a ship gun like Cuba Gooding did in the movie and blast those incoming Japs to pieces.
-
It's nearly impossible to get fleets into areas that close to land.
Cuba will need to be on ship in this one.

"Nearly" hmmm?
That means you could possibly do it! Huzzah!

Jaeger1 pointed out the avahawaii terrain, which looks great. I'm going to use that. Here is a picture of the harbor:

I just got back from Thanksgiving in Sacramento and Jaeger pointed me at this thread.
He found out I have an update (ground texture and CBM) about to be uploaded, but I'll wait until after this event ("Dec. 7th") is over. The AvA staff wouldn't be able to test it in the time allowed :( and I won't risk a problem with the new version.
Enjoy
-
It looks great -- thanks for this terrain! :aok
-
its running in the AVA right now and tomorrow for anyone that wants to check it out. it will be changed late saturday night, so jump in and take a look!
-
I will definitely be there. Get my Wildcat prepped ASAP! :airplane:
:salute
-
By the way Brooke, you'll want to keep the Japanese TGs. They're adorned with the Rising Sun and it's a little extra immersion factor.
-
Cool! Thanks for the heads up, and will do. :aok
-
One last thing. The Arizona is a fuel bunker, the only ship that is.
Having only one that burns will keep the frame rates up instead of dealing with all the fire and smoke.
I think you'll want to revisit the ships in the harbor if you haven't already, before you stick with any scoring parameters. :old: :O

will this event be any fun if One team has to sit in the tower? :headscratch:
-
God is it the 7th yet??? These dang scenarios and snapshots are now my favorite leisure activity. Kicks the crap outta the MA.
Fuel up my p40 and make sure i get plenty of incendiary rounds :)

This one allows US planes to launch at the start (i.e., alternate history: what if the US didn't disregard radar reports).
The setup us here:

Yep, I noticed that one -- was wondering why one was not a bombable -- thanks for the inside info.
I did some test attack runs and decided to adjust the hardness and scoring compared to last year.

Count me in if im im out of my cast by then. Ill be the bait :aok

Liking that terrain. Will the ships actually be in the harbor like in the picture?

this particular setup will be epic!! its a very cool terrain and the realism and immersion will be second to none! you will be missing out on something special if you don't make this one!!
-
If i remember correctly the last time we ran this the americans upped and circled the base, not actually on the runway at the time of atack
And parked the carriers right off the field. :rofl I ended up mostly chasing p40s thru a guantlet of yellow spit balls till I roman candled. :P New terrain looks awesome in the pic. Kinda early for friday night but I'll try. :salute Brooke
Edit: What about the idea of an open FSO Pearl event? :bolt:
-
The cool terrain gives this event more cowbell.
-
cowbell? bad word filter?

hopefully, one team wont be forced to stay in tower till the other team has every possible perch and advantage. and hopefully the towered team will actually have the planes that were announced as available and the choice of more than one fighter like the other team did and maybe that fighter will have more than 10mins fuel like the f6f had. hopefully the japanese wont be flying american ac like the germans were in the last scenario in north africa. maybe this scenario wont be completely rigged like the north africa scenario was.

Fear not. As you can see from the setup, none of that will come to pass:
http://ahevents.org/events/this-day-in-wwii/608.html?task=view
Regarding the North Africa setup, thank you for flying in it. I'm sorry that you didn't like it, but perhaps some of your displeasure is based on misunderstandings that I can correct. That probably won't make you like it, but it will help you see that I do my best for what these setups are.
Regarding the f6f, I think you mean the f4f, as we didn't have f6f's. The f4f has 60 minutes of fuel at 100% load and fuel burn rate of 1.0 (which is what was used in the setup) -- not 10 minutes. If you had 10 minutes of fuel, you must have loaded much less than 100% fuel.
Regarding aircraft choices, in the real Operation Torch, fighter aircraft in opposition were Vichy French (not German), and it included Dewoitine D.520's and Curtiss Hawk 75's. The bomber aircraft were Luftwaffe bombers (largely Ju 88's). We used Ju 88's, which is historically correct. The game does not have D.520's or Hawk 75's (which were American Curtiss aircraft sold to France starting in 1938), so we of course need substitutes. When I pick substitutes, I pick the aircraft that are closest in capability. Fortunately, the C.202 and Bf 109E-4 are reasonable analogs for the D.520, and the P-40 is a reasonable replacement for the Hawks (since Curtiss Hawks were the immediate predecessors of Curtiss P-40's). Each side had 3-4 aircraft types available at all times, not just one.
Regarding outcomes, I do not rig them to give either side victory. I make it as balanced as I can figure out how to do. In the Operation Torch setup, I gave each side equal numbers, each side equal points for the same things, and the fighters on each side are reasonably balanced in capability and were, in fact, contemporaries that did fight against each other in that time period. The one thing that is lopsided in the Torch setup is the naval forces, but that is made up for by the fact that the allies are working on amphibious base capture at the start, and if I made the naval forces equal, there would be not even a small chance of the allies taking a base.
Regarding scenarios, those are different events than "This Day in WWII" events. Scenarios are much more realistic, a lot more involved, run over the course of a month, and require more of players, such as knowing various player-enforced rules. "This Day in WWII" events are for players to jump in and quickly get into fun, themed action without having to know any rules whatsoever.
This is a long-winded response, intended to be respectfully submitted to you. I wanted to take the time to answer you in detail since you were kind enough to fly in Operation Torch and seem inclined to fly in Pearl Harbor. I wanted you to see what goes into these setups so that, if you don't like the setup, you at least know that I take care in crafting them and care about people having fun and the setup being balanced.

cowbell? bad word filter?
I was just making a joke based on Crazyivan's avatar, which is from this SNL skit:

Folks, the avahawaii terrain isn't allowed yet on the Special Events servers, so I'll be moving the design to how it was last year, which means moving ships instead of ships docked in Pearl.

Two days until Pearl Harbor!
-
Yes we are making sure our P 40s and our F4Fs are ready to splash the japs!
-
Awww DAMN, IF I HAD ONLY SUBSCRIBED I COULD HAVE DONE THE EVENT.. URHG.....
Best I don't take a Sike
-
You still can.
-
In honor of how many times I ran up Kansas Tower on Kaneohe, hung-over, at zero dark stupid... I will be alternating Sake and Boulevard.
Will try to keep the Wildcat off the lawn!
:salute :rock :joystick:

Todays the day.
Prior to my flight in the virtual skies ill be at lsd-52 USS Pearl Harbor at Naval Base San Diego.
While we fight for fun, never forget those who did it for much higher stakes
-
Brooke before the event can we hold a moment of silence to remember those that were lost? :salute

Brooke, I love this event but would it be possible to move the Japanese strike force closer to Pearl Harbor so we can minimize the travel time and get right down to the action? Either way, I'm in!

By about the half way point of the event, the cv's are typically 1 sector from Pearl. I like starting them farther away at the start, though, to give some initial separation so that the first IJN wave can get to alt, get sorted out, etc.
-
Folks, thanks for flying in Pearl. 160 pilots joined us. It was a lot of fun! <S>
-
Bummer. I wanted to fly this but just got home from work.
-
Except for the ahexe .stopped working as i engaged prob, woulve lost but. It was still cool using the old terrain. I wish to see this as a bigger event if the mayan calendar blah blah. allows.
And :salute to those that gave all that unfaitfull day :pray
-
It was a lot of fun. I'm hoping that I'll get to use the avahawaii terrain for next year's running of this.
