Title: Pilot Kill firsthand visual
Post by: oboe on November 15, 2012, 10:49:37 AM
Rob's post, amusing as it is - did remind me of something similiar I had been thinking about.    As a pilot who get's PK'd a fair share of times, I'd like to remain in the cockpit an instant longer - I'd like to see the explosion or the hit sprites light up the cockpit before I die.  I find the insta-transport back to the tower a little jarring.  Just an instant longer in the cockpit to witness the destruction followed by a rapid blackout or redout - and then, on to the tower.   I'm not trying to be bloodthirsty I just think it would add a little bit more continuity in the game.

Can anyone remember now how it was handled in WarBirds?  I think though you were transported to an external view where you watched your plane crash, and then got a "you have been killed" screen with music?  Something like that?

I think if it went into chase cam view on your plane, that would be pretty cool... chase cam and black and white fade out...

Some of the shootem up games will change the view to show who or what killed ya. The game Doom comes to mind as an example.

I think that's how it was in WB.

Could be a clipboard setup thing....... Basically a slider re how many secs your ghost remains in place before you wake up in tower.

spending extra time looking at your plane/tank explode would mean more time waiting to get up in a new ride to defend/attack whichever you are trying to do.

However, it would be more rewarding for me to see myself blow up or see my plane go down; then just "Die and pop back in tower".

The only thing I would add to this effect, is having the ability to "bail" out of it. In other games (sigh at COD reference), in a killcam you are able to see your death, or you can "skip" it.  We should have that option here. I can either see my plane fall "gracefully" to the earth, or I could just 'skip' and go back to tower. Either way the plane falls the same, and the kill is still awarded to my killer. Either way, both parties are happy.

Hey, that'd be kind of cool.  If you get killed, it could show the plane that kill you from the front quarter of the plane, or something.  It's always fun to watch a teammate pick of the guy that just picked you off, anyway.

Hows about a insta-action replay, to see the shot that killed you from the enemy planes point of view?  :devil  And yes I know I can already do this with the film viewer. :P

for this to work it would have to show the person who last damaged you, not necessarily the person who gets the kill.

A MUD I played a lot came up with the message...

"Oh dear.  You died.  Better luck next time!"
