Title: Your top 3/5/10 sexiest/deadliest/toughest looking aircraft of WW2...
Post by: tunnelrat on November 15, 2012, 01:21:42 PM
For pure sexy:

P-51B pre-Malcom Hood (LOVE the views, hate the bulging cyst look)

Re-2005 - tweren't many built, but love its lines nonetheless...

A-26 Invader - Haven't been able to fly one since the Air Warrior days... beautiful bird.

Mossie Mk Whatever - Just a fine looking ride

Bf-109F Series - Always loved em

Evokers of Deady:

FW-190A/F (Radial Engines) - Dunno if it's from watching WW2 movies as a kid, but these have always ranked up there for me

ME-262 - Nuff Said

F4U - Somethin about those gull wings....

Tough SOBs (Looking, anyway)

P-47 - It's the JUG man... but the bubble canopy kind of detracted from the burliness imho...

Ju-52 - Yeah, I know it's a transport plane... but nothing says COME AND GET PAPA BEAR like a tri-motor schoolbus with big bellybutton radiator rings, fixed landing gear, and an iron cross on the side.

Typhoon - Maybe it's the big ole' gaping like a 97 year old man intake on the front...

Best looking I would say is the spitfires....love the lines of them.

toughest looking are the P40's with the Flying Tiger colors.

but my favorite for actually fighting in is the KI84

The best combination of the sexiest/deadliest/toughest has to be the 190A Series and the Griffon Spits.

Spit XII is my favorite.  Beautiful but the clipped wings and the short Griffon tells you that unlike the Merlin Spits which are the sexiest fighters, the Griffon Spit XII doesn't want to dance with you so much as turn you in circles and beat the crap out of you.

Same applies to the 190A8.  Still says 190  but the extra bulges and armor says "I'm gonna punch you in the face'

Sexiest would be the Merlin Spits, the 109s, the Merlin Mustangs, the early 38s with the small intakes and birds like that

Toughest would be the Jugs along with the Cats and Corsair

Deadliest depends on who was flying what :)

I've always thought the FW-190A was the best looking aircraft in WWII.

Sexiest:
P-38G
109s
Spitfire

Deadliest:
190As
262
F4Us

Toughest:
Razorback Jugs
Hellcat
B-17G

That's my list, and I'm sticking to it.  Of course, it is a short list, but that pretty much sums it up.  In my opinion, several of those aircraft can go in all of the lists.  That's just a quick list, too.  So many planes/airframes are overlooked.

If we were to do a top three list of WW2 based on sounds, mine list would be (based on what I've heard IN PERSON, not from YouTube):
P-51 - so distinctive...absolutely love the sound of it
F4U (think I saw a -5 at Dayton...not sure what model it was)
B-17

Oh you 38 drivers....come on. Mix it up a little bit. If the 38 didn't exist what would it be?

Why?  The P-38 is really the only WW2 plane I have any interest for.

Hmm they all pretty sexy but, I will have to go with the F4U series from the -1 all the way up to the -4. Every model gives it that extra sexy but mean S.O.B look not to mention sound of the engine. Not to mention was the First fighter platform to be able a 4,000 lbs bomb payload 2x1,000# and 4x500#.

From the -1's birdcage to the -4's 4 prop blades with a nice round bubble type canopy to accent it's lines.

2nd 190
3rd 109
