Title: The LOLpocalypse
Post by: perdue3 on November 28, 2012, 12:00:07 AM
If (some higher power) smites 1 human being for every "LOL" written, typed, or texted; How much time would it take for mankind to become extinct? (This does not include "haha", "lmao", or "rofl")

Seriously though, there's nothing wrong with "Laughing Out Loud." Laughter is a good thing, even if it isn't really verbal. :)

This is a situation I have frequently contemplated, but there are a number of factors missing which would affect the outcome.

First off LOL is likely only an English language derived acronym, so only we English speakers use it to any great extent...probably.  However, for arguments sake lets assume all languages have some equivalent acronym, and god smiting applies universally to it's use.

Another factor is how is the god smiting is applied.  Is it completely random, or targeted by ethnicity, age or geography?

At first there would be a prodigious amount of god smiting, I estimate at least 1/4 of the earths population would be dead within the first week.  If 14 year old girls were omitted from smiting, that population number could increase to 1/2 or even 3/4.

Eventually though, the deaths due to smiting would start to level off.  With so many of the population dead from unknown smiting reasons, people would cease to find anything amusing and stop texting or emailing LOL for any reason.  There could also be a collapse in the social order of society and civilization as well due to random smiting.  If society collapsed, things like electricity, internet and cell phone service would cease to function. Of course this would stop all smiting until society could be re-established.

In conclusion, I don't think it would make the human race extinct, because there would be a natural dampening affect from the deaths, subsequent collapse and rebuilding.

Perfect answer. I wanted something like this when I posted the question. I like your style.
